Yes.  An interceptor, for example, which is the fastest ship, can easily evade a combat engagement, and, when it is engaged, is damned hard to hit by bigger guns because of its small "signature radius".

Are some ships faster than others?
Yes.  Interceptors are the fastest ships.  Tech 1 frigates are next fastest.

I get the feeling that an attack fighter (if thats a ship) will probably be more equipped and faster than a frigate carrying alot of mining material. Is that true?
An interceptor will be faster.  Your cargo hold contents are irrlevant to your speed, but if you fit cargo hold expanders, your speed and agility (how quickly your ship turns) both drop.

Skill points, it seems like you get them from extensive training? Is this while your ship is docked on a planet? Or can you do it in space as well?

The training happens in real time, whether you are logged on or not.  So it doesn't matter what you are doing.

But if your training in space and get attacked doesn't that mean someone else has to man the ship? Does this mean you get a crew? If so do you have to pay for all of them when your ship bites the dust? Or can they just be cloned as well as you?

There are theoretically crews.  When your ship dies, they die.  You don't die because you are a pod pilot, one of the true elite in the EVE cluster.  You do not have to pay for crews in EVE.

Are there ways for other players to go on your ship? Can they be part of the hypothetical "crew"?
Another player can man your ship if it is abandoned and they have the skills to fly it.  But only one player per ship at a time ... there can't be two players in the same ship.

Is a corporation a group of players? Or a NPC company that one choses to work for, and there are thousands of them?
There are NPC corps and player corps.  Player corps are much better than NPC corps.

If corporations are player made, doesn't that mean that there will be around 5-10 that are the "top" ones and everyone wants to get into? Since they have the most money and materials?

It's not really that way.  It just depends on what you like to do, and what your skill level is.

I was also wondering if you lose money when you die, I suppose not because of the loss of your ship, and character.

You lose (1) your ship (insurable for most ships, but you lose the amount you need to spend to insure its replacement), (2) the modules fitted, (3) the cargo hold contents, (4) your clone (if you are podkilled).  The financial loss is in terms of replacement of the things you've lost: ship, modules, cargo, clone.

Is there any way to make friends in this game, because frankly it sounds like its a dog eat dog world out there, and some things I enjoy most about MMO's is that there are real people playing.
Yes.  In fact it;s critical to make friends.  That's why a player corp is so important in EVE.

I also was just reading this article about how EVE released in China and how soooooo many people bought it, is EVE one huge game universe or are there seperate servers once you log into the game?

China will be a separate server.  Other than China, there is only one server, which  now handles the whole world and after the China server opens will handle the whole world outside of Asia.

    EVE isn't your typical MMORPG.

It requires patience and a lot of teamwork to become successful. There is no "one man army" no matter how much sp you have in this game.

It's all about joining the right corp for you, and learning to work well with these people in general.

However, the death penalty is very harsh in this game, because you can lose everything you worked for, besides your character if killed and podded.

Play the trial, and if you like it, do some research, find a corp, and have fun in EVE.

Anyone that has played eve if you could answer this I would really apreciate it... When I log onto the game, everything loads fine at the log in menu thing, then it goes into full screen mode, says "entering character selection" or something of that norm, then the screen goes completely black and all I can see is my mouse! I press escape and a menu comes up with graphics/audio/gameplay options comes up, but thats all... Any idea what the hell is going on???? I haven't tried changing any options on that menu yet, because I might not know the results... Is this a common problem!?

In options try setting it to windowed mode and see if the same thing happens. Check your video drivers and chipset drivers make sure everything is up to date. Best option is to post on EVE-Online boards or use www.eve-search.com to search for simular problems.
