Where's the cutting Edge?

MordothMordoth Member UncommonPosts: 65

Seems like MMO's these days seem to all offer different flavors of the same product but lack any real innovation.  It's like Mayfield Ice Cream vs. Bryers, both still ice cream even if they have different flavors.  Every MMO has it's good points, but where's the dynamic content?  I've yet to see a game that is very good at responding to the in-game actions of the players.

For a great number of players, being able to the game world in which they play is a great draw.  Individuality is a holy grail as well.  Despite dev's assertions that their game is different, besides art styles, most games boil down to the same level grinding and characters wearing the same/best gear and thus all looking the same.  Most games will advertise that the actions of the players affect the game world, but in reality the changes take months and lack that feeling that the player in fact effected the change.

So what upcoming game, if any, offers anything interesting, new or exciting?  Many have touted themselves as the 'next generation' game?

You have a good point. I'm still looking foe a game that doesn't involve grinding to level 50 or so and then doing instances for hours. It all seems the same to me, No mater what graphic style or developer.

Im looking into Spellborn right now. It seems a bit interesting. Also WAR looks neat and has some nifty things in it already. Well see how they turn out.

Innovation is, inherently, rare. Think about it and you'll understand this...if everything were innovative, the innovation would be average.

As the MMO genre gets absorbed more and more into the mainstream market, it becomes more and more attractive to businesses and investors. This creates competition, and budgets swell in order to edge out those competitors. As budgets swell, the cost of failure increases. As the cost of failure increases, risks become less desirable than reliable returns on investment. And suddenly you're standing in the lobby of a multiplex with a $12.00 ticket in your hand, drinking your $7.00 Diet Coke, eating your $9.00 Red Vines licorice, all ready to go see "X-Men 7," "Gilligan's Island: The Movie," or the remake of an Alfred Hitchcock film that now stars Mark Wahlberg. "Built-in audiences" (read: using the names of other people's successes to hock your product for you) and "non-threatening screenplays" (read: recycled scripts) become the industry standard. Business consumes art and excretes products.

Fortunately, there are always going to be independent, low-budget, high concept films; they'll continue to bring the art, the innovations; they just won't have the car chases, the explosions, the flash and polish of brainless summer blockbusters. For better or for worse, they won't have the people, either. Unique vision and unusual design are rewarding for the segment of the population that enjoys change, but the lowest common denominator do loves 'em some splodin' car chases.

I agree with the point i mean rs for example was very good when it was 2d! i played it alot thne i comes out with the new 3d an so many updates, i loved rs1, then rs2 i play here an there i just dont like it.

Another one, WoW its ok but its not worth it once u reach the highest lvl there is nothin to do i would like a game with no lvl liment, if one like 200 at max, new gaems make it way to low like 50 it it takes like 1 month to get there. I hate games with lagg it is sickening. I dont have slow computer its fast but when so many ppl are laggin i lagg! I also hate the bugs. I remember one bug on a game u could walk through a wall that ur not sapose to.Beat a quest wiht that ty bug!lol

WAR looks really good im probably goin to play it, if everthing is like its said to be. Roma Victor looks weird but it looks like i will try it out. These are the only games that are like the old ones. There not 2d but they look the same (gameplay) not to over loaded with quest *cough WoW* over time it will get over loaded but i will play till then.

Whenever i step outside, somebody claims to see the light
It seems to me that all of us have lost our patience.
    'cause everyone thinks they're right,
And nobody thinks that there just might
Be more than one road to our final destination--

eve, shadowbane, ryzom (especially moreso with their new expansion), uo to an extent.

eve and uo don't really have "the grind".

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

Innovation cannot happen when companies like Blizzard have a monthly intake of about $105 million, give or take a few thousand.

Why do something different, and take a risk, when you can just clone previous products and get some guarenteed cashflow?

You know why that is?because there are alot of pathetic gamers who are satisfied with games that have shown pathetic efforts by there developers. Why would they have to change there ways if dummies keep forking out money to buy there product? The majority of people are only playing to find friends anyhow so the game they play doesn't even matter.

I have seen it all, players saying they like nothing more than a simple grindfest or just a game that looks good but has no content. The other side is saying i like the game because i like its community. All three of these factors take very little effort by the developer. The community is pretty much the same in any game[hit or miss]just some say there game is better because they happen to be on the HIT side for finding the good people to hang with.

To get a better product from developers we need more demanding players ,people who are outspoken and not passivists that accept any junk there fed. What i see from every game is this....By time players finally find out the oh so many weaknesses the game has or its many design flaws they are willing to stick it out ,because

A there too afraid to put aside all the effort they put into there player

b they won't quit the game for fear of losing the friends they aquired

this creates a never ending cycle of fanbois defending there game/product no matter how weak it is.No matter what EVERY single game will have enough players fall into category A or B that it can continue to make money with an inferior product.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

This would be different, this would be innovative, this would be cutting edge.  Problem is, I'm not a developer nor do I work a gaming company.  I have the idea, but I lack the tools to get it made.  I might try to put some kind of team together to see what I can do.  We'll see.

To be honest, a game without grind that is fun and quite never ending to a certain extent is Guild Wars... There is so many different character builds and different skills you can mix and match to create your perfect build wether you want to play PvE or PvP.
There is different types of PvP too, like 4 on 4 battles... Guild Vs Guild battles... Heroes Ascent where you group up with 7 other people to make a group of 8 and battle it out through stages to win the Hall of Heroes for your country.
People are coming up with new builds all the time to get better and it involves great team play and precision to be the best... Most teams requre the use of Team speak for certain team builds like a Blood spike team, where they say a target and all cast the same spells at the same time to kill an enemy almost instant.

I think guild wars is such a great game if you are into the PvP aspects of a game. Even if your not i think the PvE in Guild Wars is far better than i have ever seen.

Also, in the recent expansion for Guild Wars, the Factions expansion. They have introduced a 12 vs 12 battle system and a whole new system of faction, where you collect luxon or kurzick faction so that you can buy towns with it and certain towns have elite missions that are almost impossible :p.

I could probably go on forever about Guild Wars but well... I love that game <3 lol

I have that game and have no interest in it. I do however, like the whole free part. Its not really innovative though. It plays very similar to WoW, excluding the PvP parts. The combat is just a bit faster.

I know. If innovation wasn't rare I wouldn't be looking for it.
