I am going to try this game out with a few other people. Do we need to all be the same race to play together? I assume the starter content might be race specific. If it is, how long will it be before we can team up, assuming we don't all choose the same race?

The starting island is shared between all races. After you leave the island, you'll be in different continents - Fyros: desert, Matis: forest, Zora

A related question:
I see from the lore that some races have a bit of what in old school D&D days would've been called "antipathy" toward each other and so forth. Will this cause trouble gaming together? For instance the Fyros seem to dislike the Matis rather a lot. If I'm playing a Fyros and my friend is playing a Matis, would we find it hard to play together? Are we better off being either the same race, or at least allied ones? (E.g., Fyros + Zorai).
Not that any of my friends are seriously considering this game (yet) -- but they might if I give it a good review after I try it out.

No need to worry about that. Unless of course you want to roleplay your character as strictly adhering to their race's traditions/beliefs/stereotypes.

*Brain down for upgrade, don't try to understand my logic, I don't...*
There´ll be a new (actually reviesed) universe-Chat included after the patch. And via /tell (Name) yiu can always stay in touch with your friends anyway. Boy I sure hope the Uni-Chat will not be spammed like WoWs common one... *sigh*

Do you dare to adapt?
Bah Jelathnia, lies, lies, lies! It takes a Tryker to know the easy routes.
Why do you think we are so renowned for our stealth and explorations? There' s no doubt some friendly Trykers will show you the way ... but it helps when flashing dappers or shiny trinckets.
Eitherway, as explained you' ll have a multi-racial area where all new players will start out thanks to the NPE.
It is certainly true there' s antipathy between various races and the followers of the Powers. Religious or racial wars have always been looming over the four races. You are by no means restricted by your choice of race; you can be whatever you want to be, given you' ll work for it.
It would be perfectly possible for a Fyros, who is by default more inclined to follow the Kami, to venerate Jena and follow the Karavan and apply for Matis or Tryker Citizenship for instance. He' ll have to work on his reputation/fame for that though; it ain' t always easy to pry yourself away from the roots of your culture and be accepted by a conflicting one.
I like how in depth the world lore is even just on the website. It makes me very interested in trying things out.
