I was just wondering... i heard alot of people talking about how WAR is not going to be level based, like WoW. Is this true? If so how are they going to implant a system that allows you to...well... level up! Also if anyone else has come across another system that allows you to level up in a game, could you state the game and what the system is called...because i know WoW is just a grinding system.

You might want to check that out first.
And yes, it is true in a way. WAR do not have levels to speak of. You advance by gaining XP like in WoW but this experience get assigned to certain skill packs that you choose to take next. When you have enough experience, you get the skill packs and you can choose the next one.
It is still an advancement system, but it let you be free to choose what you want instead of being fixed in what the devs decided for you. You basically build your own levels. so instead of always getting Fireball rank 2 and immolate rank 1 at level 5, you can choose what you want.
So you could get the fireball first, or maybe you go and take frost nova as first skill and so on.
The other big difference is that level-dependant benefits should not be present.
When you level up in WoW you not only gain new skills/spells but you also gain:
- More hit points
- Stats rise
- Mana points rise
- You get a bonus to hit enemies lower level than you.
All these these things are (probably) not automatic in WAR. Probably there are skill packs to rise some of these (or even all) but it is your choice if and when to rise them.
All in all such an advancement make PvP far more balanced. It will still happen that a Tier 4, rank 40 guy will literally swipe the floor with a Tier 1 rank 1 guy, but he might have to watch out if there are 5 of those newbies... While in level based games, in general, a level 60 guy needs not fear any number of level 10. even 1000 will not even touch him.
No game, to my knowledge, ever used a system exactly like WAR, combining general XP gain with skill packs. There are some games that had a use-based advancement for skills. these games are Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies (PRE-NGE). EVE also has a not-level based advancement system but is a third type too. Real Time advancing of skills.

I recall hearing that there will be four "teirs". These teirs are the milestones in advancement, and within each teir are multiple skill pathways you can go down. I think that Mythic is trying to avoid a number based system of advancement to make things more realistic. As you probably know, characters will change in appearance as they level up, ex. Orcs will get bigger, Dwarf's beards will grow longer, etc.
They want you to be able to see that someone is more powerful than you without clicking on them and looking at a number. You can increase in power and have people know it without them having to look at you closely, which I think is awesome.

Tiers.
Yep, 4 of them and that is when your physical appeareance will evolve. As for multiple path choosing, there is nothing know about that. Might be. or might be all customization is done trough skill packs, that could be the same thing in a way.
For example, the Hammerer (offensive Melee for dwarves) will prolly have many offensive skill packs to choose from. I figure that advanced skill packs are restricted by tier (this is confirmed by devs) AND by pre-requisites skill packs.
So at Tier 1, the Hammerer can take Basic Dual Wield Technique or Basic 2-Handed techniques. When he reaches tier 2, the Basic Dual Wield pack give him access to... dunno Whirlwind Style or Leaping Frog style. while 2-handed basic give him access to .... mah... Devastator Blows or Cleaver style. Of course there will be many more skill packs, but you will most probable be limited in how many you can take
But then the Devs said you can become a Troll Slayer and how exactly you do that with skill packs alone? Maybe there are certain skill packs that come with a title attached. if you get all the skill packs of such a title, you gain the title?

Will you link to where this tier system is talked about? I find what you've mentioned to be interesting.

This is the best description of the advancement system so far
"If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, if you teach him how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime"
Thanks. Alot of info I haven't seen before in that.
I'm really liking the tier system. Being able to pick what I get each level instead of only being able to choose a couple skills/spells ever 3 or 4 levels will be very rewarding.
