I just created a character and i'm completely lost.... anyone interested in helping me with the basics? I'm not looking for hand outs just someone to show me around a bit. I'm not sure on how to do much aside from moving and talking with people. I"m not sure if there are different servers or what it just put me into the world but my IGN is Shida. Again if anyone would mind helping me get a grasp on the game i'd be much appreciative.
Thanks again

A few basic hints:
Read the manual. It really does help.
Explore your home town. Talk to every NPC you find; many explain game functions or will give you other info, and others will give you quests. Pay attention to what they say, many times you are not given explicit instructions on what to do and you need to catch what they're hinting at. Oh, and talk to your house moogle, too, he'll explain how your mog house works (you'll even get a new title for that--check your Profile!).
Explore your menus--just about every major action your character can take other than just moving around is buried in some menu or another. Search out all the menu options and learn what each option does and how to use it. Note that you have two menu systems: a main menu you activate with the "-" key, and a context menu that comes up when you hit enter while targetting something you can perform actions on. Learn both.
Explore your commands--/? will list every command you can issue. You'll have to scroll your chat log back a couple of screens to see the beginning of the list. Following /? with a specific command will explain the details and options of that command.
Use the internet. ffxi.allakhazam.com and ffxi.somepage.com are both great resources and can often answer a specific question.
Get signet before going out to fight monsters--having signet on will make the monsters drop crystals, which are worth more in the Auction House than just about anything else you can get your hands on at this level. Talk to the gate guard with "I.M.", "T.K" or "W.W." after his name (depending on whether you're Bastokan, San d'Orian, or Windurstian, respectively).
FFXI doesn't have much money loot drops. Most mobs never drop money. Your loot will be items, which you mostly won't have much use for yourself at this stage. But other people will find a lot of it worthwhile. Sell your loot at the Auction House (and *not* to the NPC shopkeepers unless you find nobody on the AH will buy it). Remember the Penny Arcade adage: "Crisp Basilisk Urethra? Pick it up. Put it in your bag. There's somebody out there who wants that." Not always true, but true much more often than not. Not many items really have no use.
Conversely, *buy* your equipment and supplies from the NPCs, not the AH (although the AH is occasionally cheaper, so a little comparison shopping never hurts).
The check command. Know it, use it, love it. Always know how strong a monster is relative to you before you engage him.
Keep your beastman's seals, never throw them away, You'll use them to start special instanced fights later that can yield *very* valuable loot. At a conservative estimate, they're worth 10,000 gil apiece if you do at all well in those fights. Since they're Ex, however, you'll just have to hang onto them until you're ready for those fights.
And have fun! Until you reach level four, there's no penalty for dying; you can just return to your home point. So don't worry much about mistakes.

I just loaded my copy up also and wow.........I forgot everything about this game.......talk about a rough start up lol.
It is a bit difficult to get set up.
One thing you can do to make a bit easier to control is to go into your main menu then look for "config" then look for "misc2" there you will see "keyboard"/ It is probably on "full size". Switch it to "compact". That will give you W,A,S,D movement and should make it a bit easier to move around. the rest is all targeting and arrowing through menues, its pretty easy actually.
Also, in your program menu, you can go into FFXI config and change all the game setting so it looks better. The default is pretty yucky and grainy looking. I changed all my settings to 1024x1024. You can also activate a gamepad if you have one, from there.
This game looks great! (especially once you adjust the resolutions in the FFXI config) And the performance is silk smooth. How is this game flys under the radar like this? I'm guess because the WoW kids don't like the grind???
The atmosphere and style are great. I only got a chance to play for a few hours yesterday and most of that was tinkering with the set up, but wow, this game really looks good. (the elves are still weird looking but thats a good thing lol) After going through alot of the North American made clones and generic fantasy worlds, its L2 and this one that really have some great worlds and graphics. I hoping to really dive into this one.
I honestly don't understand how this game can look and perform so good, have such LOW system requirements and be 3 or 4 years old. EQII runs like crap compared to this game and definately doesn't look near as good and has four times the system requirments! I must be missing something lol...
