1. Very light death penalty. NO XP debt/loss whatsoever. Something like repair cost and a corpse run is good enough. Say what you want about it being "ezmode", etc. etc., but when I'm already doing the same exact thing from level 1 to the level cap, I don't want to do it yet again because I died and lost some XP... which leads me to
#2...
2. Short(ish) grind. Grinding is just busy work, as it is basically the same thing that you have to do literally thousands and thousands of times. Not only that, but its the same thing in EVERY game. If you've ever grinding to level 2 in just about ANY MMO, you've experienced every grind in every MMO ever made. Just different animations and textures.
A short grind with alot of other stuff to advance in at the level cap is good (gear being the most obvious). A newly turned capped-out player should be able to compete with a player that has been capped for a year with uber gear. The capped-out player should have a HUGE advantage, but it should still be possible for the newbie to take him on.
3. PvP. Something with more than a /duel system.
Right now I'm playing WoW, as it is basically the only MMO I know that has these 3 things. There are lots of things about WoW I hate (such as the lag and server crashes every night from 7-11pm), but its the only MMO that has what I need to have fun. As soon as another MMO that has these 3 things (crosses fingers for warhammer) then I'll give it a shot... until then, I guess I'll be sticking with WoW.

Ever.
lol thats so sad yet so true....
i also need all of these things in an MMO but it must also have a good crafting system....
i LOVED swg's crafting when it was useful that was probably one of my favorite aspects of the game =/ hoping an mmo will come out with one similar to it soon.....
2. Great Graphics/Interface
3. Group Based
1. PVP with a purpose.. Ala sometype of RvR pvp, where you can take the enemys land, towers, castle, ect. No instance crap.. When I win or loose a fight I will feel it, IE my land will be taken and I will have to fight to get it back... AO, DAOC, and Planetside PVP is what I want. Not guild wars and WOW PVP
2. Player built cities/towns/castles/ect that will be attackable.. See #1
3. A dev team that has active CS support.. one that monitors chat channels and responds quickly to problems.. Anarchy Online did it best here... If there was somone causing trouble in the chat channel or using a exlpoit.. One call to a ARK and that person was handled quickly... No more "YOur moma is my quest item" crap anymore that I see so much of in WOW.
4. Auction house..sorrry but its needed as someone else mentioned.
5. Tons of Instances -AO and WOW spoiled me there
6. Content and lots of it.. I dont want to play anymore games like City of Heros/villians that only offer one or two things to do... I want some depth I want to be able to craft/mine/Farm/hunt for rare bosses/make equipment or weapons... You know do stuff other thing run missions or kill AI all damn day long.
7. Latest and greatest Graphics
8. And last but not least I want End game to be all about PVP...I want to play a game where the whole purpose is to go to War agianst the Enemy...

You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith
1. Customization: The vast majority of single player RPG's have more customization then a modern mmo.
2. Good Looking Graphics: Graphics aren't everything blah blah blah. I played Blade Mistress; and those graphics almost made me puke; literally. I love looking at pretty things, and exploring finding lush breathetaking areas. Graphics are definetly a strong part of that. Especially the female models (Staring at a 1:0.7:1 chest, waist, hip ratio woman definetly makes the tedious grind and long journey that much better).
3. Exploration/Large Map: I really want things new to discover. I played many games were I saw everything to do within 8 hours. It kinda takes the fun out of it.
Here is 4 just because 3 isn't enough.
4. Good GUI: Nothing clunky or else I have trouble looking at the 3 things above. I love simple GUI's; the GUI in Ragnarok Online is the only thing keeping me playing it. Its nice simple and effective.
And always will be.
A Work in Progress.

Don't take this as an insult if you like the game. I have a difference of opinion, though I do need to point something out; WoW has a huge grind. 1-60 isn't it, however; raiding and PvP are the culprits here. At endgame, the main point of interest is constant raiding of 2-3 different areas so that you can reward a small amount of people who you can't trust to stay on and make use of their gear. Because of this, when said person ends up leaving the guild/game, you realize you spent a large amount of raids wasted on them and therefore have to do more raids to benefit other people who possibly will pull the same stunt. So it's an endless cycle there. And with PvP, the main draw to it is the ability to get new gear through...yeah, endless hours of grinding to get the allotted amount of PvP points necessary to reach whatever rank it is you're intending to get to.
What this all boils down to is that it becomes a game revolving around singular players. And that is why the game irks the hell out of me.
Acually Everquest had it first, It was called the Bazaar, so i doubt EQ2 Stole the idea from Wow, but took it form the original game.. EQ
In fact it's hard to steal any ideas from Wow becuase pretty much everything in Wow has been done before in some game or another.

Not only did the original EQ2 carry over the auction house concept from the original EQ, EQ2 also gives you the option to sell things by going to the auction house or by selling them from your own home, where people looking in an auction house could still see your wares. WOW's copycat auction house is weak in comparison to EQ2's.
Guild Wars.
1) Death penalty = Lowered maximum health/Energy for the duration of the mission/area, or until it's been worked off by EXP, whichever comes first. Worse comes to worse, abort the mission and loose the DP immediately.
2) Grind? It doesn't take any time at all to get to the level cap compared to any other MMORPG. Almost the whole game in GW: Factions is end-game content, with respect to level. This means you can go back and help a friend do a mission near the beginning of the game without it being too easy and while still getting some benefit from it.
3) The PvP is pretty deep. One of the complaints of players is that the game is focused on PvP and the PvE seems almost like an afterthought. Not true (else there wouldn't be 2 whole continents to play on for PvE!), but it does go to show that PvP is definitely a big part of the game. And then there's the $100,000 prize purse for PvP that goes on with the release of every installment of the game.
The downsides are that the game is entirely instanced and the lack of grind means there's not as much to accomplish, but at least there's no monthly fee.
Oh and its so much fun if there is a grind you forget about it.It has questing crafting and really a minimal at best death penalty. No corpse run whatsoever. If you "wreck" your car a transport is available to get you to a repair station.
BTW did i mention its actually fun?
Want to ENJOY an mmo?
Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.
Just play the damn game:)
1. Character Customisation: This is important for my gameplay. First Id like to be able to make my character look diffrent than everyone else (asian games usualy has 3 diffrent types of faces, 4 types of hairdoes and 4 hair color cariations to go with it). I also want armor that looks cool, I would love a game where even though Im wearing a lvl 20000 plate armor of leet uberness, it wont look the same as the lvl 20000 plate armor of leet uberness that everyone else is wearing, mostly because its the most viable armor for that class in the game. That said I also want a game where I play a character, not stuck in a car or in a ship all the time.
2. Graphics: They dont have to be uber, but I am getting tired of AO, EQ type graphics.
3. PvP: I love pvp, and my usual rutine in any mmo is do the grind til end level, get whatever gear I need and then pvp til I get bored of the game. Wow pvp, horrible. GW pvp, nice but lacking. AO pvp, cool but bugged and not realy a pvp game.
4. Background Story, Ill admit I am more fan of sci-fi type games out there. And the only viable sci-fi games are planetside, ao and eve. Planetside is SOE and its fps, eve is more for casual gamers, and ao is realy cool, but lacking in graphics and pvp (maybe lost eden will fix this). SWG used to be a good game... I dont mind playing fantasy either, but please make something original atleast.
6. PvE, I dont care as much about PvE. Reason is that its the same in all the games anyway. Im used to go grind mobs for 100 levels, and I dont mind doing it either. What mmo do you not run around and kill things for hours on end til you get a level or skill boost? Well, actually eve did a cool thing there, but I dont feel like having to go inn and click a button on a skill for 2 years before theres any point to start playing it.
1) Harsh death penalty.
2) Zero, none, nadda Instances...One big seamless world.
3) Long, hard, mentally challenging, often frustrating quest system, with amazing exp/item rewards.
oh and a GM crew that finds torturing Bots/Farmers/cheats to be great fun, right before the perma ban.
And always will be.
No reason to hate, its a good game.
1. Character-driven and story-driven roleplay.
2. No grind, and especially, no grinding to advance (time-based advancement preferred)
That's why I no longer play any MMOGs, and have gone to the text MUSHes
