Does it matter? As long as any upcoming games lives up to what the Devs have said, who cares if it's the #1.

    I do agree with you.

Age of Conan will be one of the Milestone games to work with the Vista capabilties, this is want I want to see myself and hope everything does fall into place as the Devs state.

In terms of gameplay, who knows. I don't see a reason why not.

In terms of population, hell no.

No, I don't think it will be the next big game. I think certainly it will be a quality game, but I can't see it hitting anywhere near 1m subscribers or maybe even 500k.

Players are getting bored of WoW. The up-comming expension will bring most of them back and even new ones. But sooner or later ppl will start to look for a next MMO (again). Since WoW brought many new players to MMO games they will all scatter around. They will not just hump one game... They will find what they like.

So I don't think it will ever top WoW.

I just read that Conan expects a mature rating and we know it will stay true to the Conan lore.  I think people who saw bloodless trailers from E3 will be surprised when the game is released with its expected mature rating (as per their FAQ).  This game seems to have a perfect recipe to please jaded WOW players.

Im just going to tell u now that Windows Vista isnt going to help mmorpgs. Ive tried windows vista and the only difference in it is better icons. So dont hope that vista will help mmorpgs. It is still in beta . DX10 will prolly be a help but not a big one. The only thing helping mmorpgs in windows is the hardware like the new physicx engine and all.

Vista is in beta, you're making it sounds like it's in release. It's still months and months until they finally release it commercially. Also, since DX10 will be released sometime around the same time as the OS launches, wouldn't that "help MMORPGs" and their graphics? Yes they will.

I'm actually pretty anxious for aoc myself.

being a vet of WoW and SWG.  I'm looking for a more mature audience.  I'm only 20 but god oh god, the little teens ruined WoW for me! Althought I loved every minute of gameplay.

But I'm looking forward to good pvp, fortress seige building, diff races, and new mounts.  looks interesting

I think it would take a pretty big IP to top WOW and in my opinion I don't think Conan is it.  I do think the Marvel Comics MMO would be big enough but it will depend on the game play.  Anyone know who is developing the Marvel or DC MMOs?

The concept has a few merits. The Conan name is very well known, and thus it will carry with it a bit of pre-made marketing muscle. They're also getting good press...the game is making a splash with the previews, and that's always a good thing.

FunCom has a few strikes against it, though.

    1) They failed miserably in their release of AO. While AO has become a pretty good game, they made an absolute mess of it their first go around. I expect they've learned their lessons and won't make the same mistakes...but I was there in beta and there when the game was released and it was a horror show. I won't take a chance on the game until it's been reviewed.

    2) FunCom games tend to be fairly complicated. AO is the game with the second highest learning curve of all MMOGs I've played (EVE being the highest). While I personally consider this a good thing, this will likely be a barrier to some players. I can't say with any certainty this will happen with this game, but there is a bit of word-of-mouth buzzkill that goes on when some kid tries the game out, can't figure it out, and tells all his friends the game "sucks". This is a common problem with "complicated" games.

    3) The game is also going to be fairly mature in its content, and that won't go over well with Christmas gifts. Say whatever you like, the market is driven by moms buying games for their kids. Testament from everyone who constantly complains how "immature" the WoW community is...do you wonder why?

    ---

I couldn't care less if Conan gets 5 million subscribers. All I care for is that the game is fun and stable.

I do believe that will be a big seller for AoC, is that people will hope and pray that moms arent buying the "M" rated game for there 10yr old boys.   of course we all know they will. and it will be somewhat like the other games we play out there.

But I'm still gonna give AoC a try, it looks pretty good.  I'm not looking to be blown away or nothing! but who knows

Depending on how it is advertised, it can do very well; maybe in the few million range.  They also seem to have the backing of Microsoft now so that should help things progress alot.

I'll probably try it myself. But biggest next game....No.

  • asupermaneasupermane Member Posts: 682

Great post here with some very valid points

One thing I will add though is that AOC will be a eye opening experience for alot of people that came to this genre thanks to WOW... There going to step into a game where they cannot say and do what ever they like in Chat channels like they can do in WOW.. One of the best qualitys of Anarchy Online (funcoms first MMORPG) was the in-game support. Mess around and say something stupid, get caught training mobs, exploiting, or any other type of harrassement in that game and 5 mins later your going to find yourself standing infront of a ARK or GM trying to squirm your way out of your punishment.

Many WOW players are used to having the run of the place, being able to say and do anything.  Going by how Funcom ran Anarchy Online, these same WOW kiddies will not be able to do the same thing in Age of Conan.

I agree with what the poster above said, I also could care less if AOC gets 5million sub.  All I want is a game where I dont have to listen to kiddie "I Pwn you NOob" "Chuck NOrriS!!"spam in the chat channels day in and day out. I just want to see a mature community in a MMORPG agian, like there was when I played AO back in the day. Hopefully Funcom understands this need and continues to bring us great in-game CS like they had/have in AO.

You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith

With so many mmoRPG's coming out at the end of the year, I truly think AoC will be a winner (guess this classifies me as a fan), but anyways on a good note, I agree with the last few posters. As long as the game is fun and enjoyable to play, I will pay Funcom the monthly fee, I just hope it keeps me interested in the long run.

SOE is developing DC's game and Microsoft is developing the Marvel MMO.

Funcom are bringing many new ideas to the genre with AoC and that alone has got to be applauded.  It will not in any way get the kinds of numbers that WoW can boast but it will be a successful title.

A superhero mmorpg could be intense (i've never played CoH).  I'm glad Marvel and DC are getting paid well for their liscenses, but neither game will be worth a damn if put out by those companies.

I dont think it will top WoW for # of subscriptions, but I think it will do well.

The only thing that concerns me, is how people will take to the pvp in AoC. Its been a long time since I read up on AoC, so I dont recall how it is being implemented, but I personally prefer how Shadowbane did pvp(first 6 months of that game were a blast)(except the SB.exe errors that is).

But regardless of how pvp is, I think it will drive many away from the game after they have tried it.

No, the average gamer is 30.  Source:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game

The bottom line of companies having games with Teen ratings when they really need blood and gore is that the companies are afraid of what the community OUTSIDE of gaming will think.  It's an image thing.  They want to draw young gamers in.  It seems foolish to me, to expect to draw young gamers in with a teen rating.  What not go for the gold, and either go for an E rating or an M rating?

I've never played AO, but I played EVE and found that learning to play it was a matter of having some common sense.  There are a below average number of teenie boppers in that game's community.  For all it's worth, I hope playing conan requires a college degree to play.
