You'll get many different answers but for me it's because of the PvP. The fact that you can actually loose a LOT in PVP is what makes the adrenalie rush.

I tried many games but only eve can make my heart pumping like mad when i enter a fight.

    1.   The game is intricate, complex and large  (5,000 solar systems)

    2.   A unique skill training system that allows you to train skills offline.

    3.   Excellent graphics

    4.   Excellent player vs player

The game is not for the weak of heart.   You can play the game and avoid Player vs Player by staying in secure systems.   There you can do missions, mine asteroids, hunt npc's in asteroid belts or run dead space complexes but there is a good chance you will tire of those eventually.   You don't have a character like you would in SWG or WoW, you have a character sheet and you pilot space ships (many varieties).

Because it combines a compelling story, excellent mechanics, player driven economy and player driven content with a beautiful graphical environment.  It's a completely open ended system which allows players to do pretty much anything they desire.

You may or may not *enjoy* EVE but anyone who tries it will give it credit for being a very good game.  Though it may not be their thing.

Eve has a lot of roaming fanbois so expect them all to reply to this post. Eve is the AFK game - you can go away for an entire subscription month because the skill you need the most takes 30 days. Yes it has a very intricate skill system, if you want a heavy launcher you will need medium launcher 3 small launcher 3 and launcher operation 4 etc and this means that someone who specialises will have something that someone else doesnt BUT the game is full of 2 year vets that have specialised in *everything* and youre jus catching up - attempting to be vaguely comparable with 1 of them.

Its a 100% PVP game with no end-game pve content. I played it for a long time but just ended up with no objectives. Because a ship takes so long to obtain people are sheepish and only travel in huge groups that never meet. The result is either very boring or you losing your best ship to a huge group of gankers :)

Sure people are afraid of losing thier pricey ships, but that is why you see Bantam Bashs and such. Setup a few cheap T1 frigates with parts you can manufacture in corp and guess what you have everythign you need to get a small group together and PvP.

EvE gives a great advantage to those who can plan things out and punishes those who refuse to. This gets people frustrated. EvE is also the type of game where rushing into a ship before you can properly gear it is a step back in progression not forward.

Most people who love EvE are the tinkering, plotting and planning type. I would bet the Devs are also of this type. If you want a game where you can rush or just dive in and fumble around until you succeed you will msot likely hate EvE.

EvE and Guild Wars (also WoW) are sorta the opposits of the MMO genres. People who love one usually hate the other with much wonting and abandon. Nothign wrong with either, but their players views seem to rarely meet.

Your first point about the skill system is detached from reality, and people who've been in the game for a month or two are constantly proving it in PvP. The only truth there is that skill training is independant of what you do in-game - theres no level grind, which is a great help to more casual players (such as myself).

Your second point is very fair - EVE is not a PvE game. The PvE aspect is at its best mediocre and at its worst atrocious. Market-based PvP or combat-based PvP, either way the game is based on competing with other players, and if thats not your thing, than you will *hate* EVE.

Hmmm I posted saying EVE is good... yet I don't play and actually don't like the game much.  There are features I really like but other features I really don't like....

    Am I a fanboi or a hater?

Someone help me!  I'm confused! :)

    Maybe I'm just honest :)

Eve is a good game.... but it's certainly not a game that everyone will like.  It's got a nice 14 day trial.... anyone who buys it without doing the trial first deserves whatever they get.  You will know if EVE is for you or not within that 14 days.  Promise :)

    Eve...

    Eve is wierd.

I used to play it, and i stopped for no apparent reason whatsoever. Eve is like a vampire sucking you dry and leaving you to rot. The experience itself is pleasantly good though :)

Because the game is getting over-time better instead of worse, and the same can be said about the amount of people playing.

    I agree.

For the type of game that Eve is and what it is advertised as, it is a good game.

Is it for me personally? No.

EvE is a giant sandbox.  EvE doesn't hold your hand and tell you what to do in the game, that's up to you entirely. People with no wits or ambition get bored of it pretty fast.

EVE has a good rating because allthough many do not like it enough to play it, very few hate it.

There are some good parts and some not so good parts but very few bad parts.

So most people who try it and decide to not continue do so for the reason that allthough it works and is pretty good, it is not for them, and as such do not take the time to try and trash it.

So in the end, allthough they occasionally have "mmorpg.com raids" over there were they urge everyone to come here, most of the reviews are honest ones.

Everyone should at least try the 14 day trial, even if you decide to quit after the first day it is different enough that you migth start viewing other MMO's in another ligth, and frankly the only one whos opinion you should care about is your own..

I would urge you to stay away from the EVE forums though.

    1) Deep
    2) Original
    3) Innovative
    4) Did I mention it was deep. Crafting, economy, market, are all the very best of any online game. Its like Tradewars meets UO meets Elite.

You can actually advance your character without every killing anybody or anything, you can advance your character just by manufacturing, just by mining, just by hauling cargo, just by trading.

    It's just an incredible game.

someone can play eve for 4 hours a day for one week, after that one week there is a chance that person can beat someone who's been playing eve since release, not all that likely, but possible, on the other hand it's not possible to beat a lvl 60 warrior with a lvl 40 warrior, and it takes a long time just to get to 40

I like Eve because not only is it open-ended, but it is also semi-casual friendly.  I say semi-casual because I don't have to grind for hours and hours and hours like in other games, but it does take a lot of research and patience to be competitive.

On the other hand, I left because there really wasn't that much to do in the game.  Sure, there may be the PvP side of things, but the game is designed such that it's so very hard to trust anyone.  That is, it's so easy to backstab, cheat, steal, ect, and there is no justice to be had.  Killing a person isn't even satisfying if they've wronged you in some way.

Eve is both vast and complex, and totally comeptitive.

If you are not good at making money by any of the vast options, then you will not have the same kind of access to ships and equipment and skills as another BETTER player.

Eve is a game where your intelligence, and competitive edge MATTER.

Grinding gets you nothing, because everyone does it.

To put Eve into perspective, I will describe the situation of the single shard Eve Galaxy.

There are currently three ultra large, ultra rich, ultra strong player created factions within the game.

Due to the long history and violence of Eves player community, these three factions also happen to be the militarilly mightiest.

These current Three Factions have evolved out of long and complex politics and warfare involving player factions. They are the best players, with the best organisation, and they own the best/most richest resource fields.

As a result these factions are the few that are able to not only construct Eve onlines largest vessels and strongest fleets, but also to resupply them and to deploy them with effect.

There are many other smaller factions, all player operated and run, that control their own regions and are involved to varying degrees in the ever evolving political landscape of Eve-online.

Eve is the kind of game where a superpower flies into battle, supported by politically manipulated allies, to inflict devestation on an enemy that has been weakened by the employment of mercenaries against them.

If you are unable to compete in Eve-online, you will find yourself on the receiving end of a huge beating, and you will be limping off to the newbie zones with nothing, not even your pride, intact.

You wont be able to have the shiniest equipment, nor the largets horde of items, by farming.

Only the best and most succesful at politics, industry, and warfare will ever have anything to boast about, their own mini empire.

Eve is slow and big for the newbie, and in a pvp game there seems to be a huge mismatch between old and new players in terms of skill.

But numbers matter less than intelligence and cunning and awareness in Eve online.

Something that could be inferred from previous comments, but that hasn't really been said explicitly: a lot of the fun of EVE Online depends on being part of a player corporation.

There are some things you can do by yourself in EVE, but the real meat of the game (as the developers point out) is in group play. If you're not in a corp, you simply can't experience much of EVE's gameplay -- it's just too dangerous for a soloer.

I put together a set of bullet points a while back that describes EVE Online's features from my personal point of view. (Others are free to disagree.)

    POSITIVES

    • numerous ship types -- different by size, purpose, and allegiance
    • many, many ship outfitting options
    • moderately good tactical combat game (ship-to-ship combat)
    • relatively deep asteroid mining/refining game
    • rich skills system
    • skills are learned in real time -- no grinding for levels
    • varied factional NPC mission/quest system
    • good support for factional player organizations ("corps")
    • factory system allows generation of game objects
    • research system allows creation of new game objects
    • good cargo trading game tied in with factory production
    • price tracking data for all locally available goods
    • 5000+ solar systems (with multiple planets/moons) to explore
    • ungoverned areas can be controlled with player-created outposts
    • easy-to-understand mechanism for travelling from one place to another
    • difficulty of NPCs is keyed to "security level" of solar systems
    • quality of NPC loot drops is appropriate to NPC difficulty
    • 24x7 PvP that (usually) doesn't affect those who don't want it
    • PKers are visually tagged
    • dialup-friendly -- light on network traffic, and fairly small patches
    • graphically nice -- ships and space are both fairly pretty

    NEGATIVES

    • 24x7 PvP everywhere is intimidating
    • constant competition (except within one's corp) is exhausting
    • space-based only -- no 1st-person planetary activity whatsoever
    • mining and ship combat are really the only things that can be done full-time
    • mining is boring (so to speak) -- just turn on the mining lasers and wait
    • research system is so hard that only the truly hardcore can afford to play it
    • NPC-generated market items (economy is not fully player-based)
    • factory production is not very detailed
    • backstory doesn't affect gameplay
    • few activities that allow your character to express a story (roleplaying)

If you're happier being around other people than being on your own; if you enjoy being part of a group that is constantly competing against other groups (not just combat but economic competition as well); if you prefer hardcore competition where both victory and defeat can mean significant (in-game) consequences, then EVE Online may be for you.

If you prefer a more traditional MMORPG with ground-based avatars, tank/nuker/healer+aggro combat mechanics, and levels that can be increased through repetitive actions, and aren't much interested in crafting and/or sales, then EVE is probably not going to be your cup of tea.

I would say there is no such thing as end game in EVE.

End game is an artificial contruct of games with level caps where the devs don't know what to do when people have hit the point where half the game is no longer important so they emphasize the other part of the game that has no cap.

Eve is endless just like business in the real world is endless.

as a 'GAME', EVE is spectacular. whether you like that particular game or not...only you can decide. By far the best community in my opinion, plus its not run by some HUGE coorporation, so the devs tend to make a great game, not a great commercial.

    See you in the dream..
The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.

Not sure what to say to this, as it is obviously a complete lie, it has been admitted many times here and their own forums allthough very very hard to search is not like the pentagon.

By never you mean not in the past 2 months or?

I will not throw you around, but you know you just lied and so does everyone else.
