I tried this game a year ago. I played for about a month. Ultimately the lack of organized content is what made me quit the game.
The community is top notch. I found people willing to bend over backwards to help me out. I have no complaints there.
The graphics are excellent. Spell effects and combat effects look great.
The world feels alive. Its very cool to see roaming hordes of herbivores and watch carnivores take them down. Its a very vivid world with very original MOB types.
Here comes the but...at the end of the day there just wasn't a lot to do. I like games to have something to do. Even if it be fedex missions, kill tasks, or escort quests, I like to feel like I'm doing something. And if the game does have a grind rather than quests, I need the end game to be what I'm pushing for.
Ryzom just doesn't really have any of that. There isn't any quests to speak of. There are missions but they really aren't worth doing. There is no real story behind them and the rewards are bleak. The end game was practically non-existent from what I could tell. It seems there are some zones that are PvP that have very good mats to dig and there are fights over those digging grounds but that isn't much of an endgame to me.
To advance your character it boils down to digging for mats or killing the local wildlife. And when you reach max skill in a branch, you can start another branch and max it out too but don't look for any great epic PvP battles or raid conent because its just not there.
Ryzom ultimately boils down to its community. If you play MMOG's to enjoy a great community then you might want to check it out. For me, I just like to do more than chat and grind mobs. It just doesn't hold my attention for a very long period of time. I am more competitive by nature and enjoy games that breed competition.
i'm gonna have a try at defining what there is to 'do' in SoR, god help me
you play the starter area, get led around with lots of nice quests explaining how to play, giving you background on your race, the factions, etc
you come to the mainland and think hmm, why cant i find missions for better armor, skills, lalala
you get to know some people, join a guild or start your own. you gain levels, gain experience, live in the world, make friends and enemies, set yourself goals (thats the important part here, the game doesnt try and make you do anything; its up to you)
the Saga has so far progressed like this: there are many small events held, characters will unfold the story, be it tracking other homins, searching for ancient artifacts, getting players to escort them deep into the prime roots.. at critical points a new chapter will start, in the past we have had major events that last several weeks - building temples for our gods, establishing new camps to fight off kitin, these tend to introduce new gameplay features and require the effort of the entire server.
Mixed in with these are invasions, generally the kitin but there have been other mobs that have risen up and offer day long events to fight them back.. the last was interesting as one of the capitals was invaded - Pyr swarming with kitin was a sight to behold
so one's role when playing is to live in the world, build alliances, become stronger, prepare for these larger events. This activity is not scripted by the dev's its up to the individual to decide how to pass their time.. be it grinding combat, learning the arts of crafting or foraging in the roots, fighting over outposts, whatever.
a lot of people take some time to get used to the unstructured gameplay and thus compain of no content.. it's far from the truth, you just have to find your place on Atys - what that is is up to you.
and and to the previous poster, you i guess werent around for the 2/3 week long epic PvP battle when the temples were built

No. I wasn't but it sure sounds fun
I appreciate what the designers of the game as well as the community are doing with Ryzom. Its just not for me. The events you describe sound great. I just like games with something a bit more permanent to look forward to.
Originally posted by Stuffy Content is very subjective. What do you mean by content?
If you by content means allot of quests and such, well then there is close to no "content" at all. After the inissial tutorial on the trial island there is basicly no more quests.
There is outposts with can be contested over by players in a pvp battle. The outposts give some really nice rewards to
Regarding the storyline: It is very very well writen there is a ton of backstory on the official site. And there are some rites you can do to unlock more lore ingame. The gameworld and story is progressing via ingame events and they usually play out very nicely
I've been playing for close to a year and have yet to be bored ingame and just bechouse there is no "quests" doesn't mean that you have to grind all the time.
im curious about the contested outpost (pvp). could you tell me more. i enjoy pvp in games. i find that pve only games get very stale quickly for me. do many people pvp? or is it just a cheesy add in?
