oh and btw, I dont play the game.
This thread comes up waaay too often. I enjoyed RuneScape for quite some time and met a small community of people I really like and still hang out with. What I don't like about RuneScape is the lack of grouping and group content. I think the game would be more enjoyable if there was any benefit to cooperation, as people would probably cooperate (and, incedently, maybe speed up the grind) instead of being at each other's throats over spawns. I felt like I was constantly in a subtle fight with everyone else. That wore me down.
I play rs...

I don't need LIFE as a 1337 GAMER, I have never-ending life!
MMORPGs:
RuneScape, World of WarCraft
Runescape has a horrible community, as evidenced by most of the people who say they play it.

750,000 members means nothing if you can make free accounts, no profits from free accounts. Not to mention that you can make as many accounts as you want, so 750,000 means nothing at all.
[url=http://www.mmogchart.com/] go to market share by MMOG, see the blue, thats success. 650 million(American millions) players, who all pay 15 dollars a month.

Actually, you're mistaken. Though I assume that the 650 million (I don't know if there are even that many US citizens) was a typo. The RuneScape accounts are, according to the person who compiles all that information, paying subscribers and doesn't include the free accounts. Take a look at the "analysis and conclusions" page. Plus, really, no game ever got near what WoW got in Western markets. Its kind of an invalid comparison.
RuneScape (Accuracy Rating: A)
RuneScape is a Java-based fantasy MMOG that, like Tibia, can be played for free but which offers premium accounts for a small monthly fee. It is important to note that the chart records actual subscribers from the start of premium service in February 2002, not the free accounts. In 2004 the games growth rate increased sharply; as of April 2006 RuneScape has garnered 697,000 subscribers. http://www.runescape.com/
Personally, my opinion has long been that RuneScape is the ultimate niche MMO. Its very cheap and the download is very small. Because its played through the browser people call it a no-download game, though thats inaccurate. For the relatively low cost you get a huge, crazy long, skill grind and pretty darn regular content upgrades. Even if the quests were sometimes annoying, they weren't all gather/kill ones either.
