Help with Multiclassing

Im thinking of trying this game but I'm confused about schools classes and multiclassing.

How do I multiclass?

If I become a mage and then a wizard do i lose my Mage spells? If I then become a ranger can I still cast mage and wizard spells?

I don't understand how this multiclassing works. Is it like FFXI? Do I stay a level 20monk 30wizard and just switch between the classes?

The answer to your question is yes and no.

You do simply change schools but you only keep some of your abilities - those you've mastered.

To master an ability means to have gained twice the levels since attainment. In other words, if you learn Heal I at level 5, you master it at level 10. Then, when you switch schools, you don't lose Heal I. This is why most people spend 10 levels as a Cleric.

So, if you want to be a Ranger and a Mage, you'll want to gain your abilities, then spend twice that time in that school before switching.

You keep your stat and skill gains, and you can cast any spells you know so long as they are allowed by your new class and level.

If you change class, any equipment you are wearing that is not allowed by your new class is unequipped - this often results in you standing there naked and possibly overburdened. ::::02::

Say I get to a lvl 15 ranger, then do lvl 10 cleric. Can I go back to ranger and be lvl 15?

Yes, as far as experience your progress is "frozen" in that school until you go back to it.

This is not to say you don't advance at all. Each class or school raises a variety of skills at different rates. For instance if you played a Druid then switched to warrior, you could advance your "shield" skill past the skill of what you had as a Druid. If you then switched back to Druid you've retain the superior shield skill of the warrior (though the shield skill would not advance until the point where your Druid training would normally exceed the skill you'd gained as a warrior).

It is a lot like Anarchy Online's combination of skill and class... only you can switch the "classes" at any time you choose.
