I know this is random... but why do they not have a free trial for AC?

I mean, it's fine if they want to leave it the way it is... and just let people join from word of mouth. But do you really think new players want to have to pay for the game, THEN see? Everyone has free trials, why should they be any different? ::::12::

I wasn't playing AC actively at the time they did have free trials but I think there were people creating chars to increase their monarchy ranks.    This was exploited so they shut it down.   Its a shame too because it would bring alot of new people into the game.

I think they should allow free trials again but restict them to 1 week and only allow them on one server so all the newbie players would be grouped together and they could monitor any exploits better that way.    In my opinion, 1 week is plenty of time to get a feel for a game and make a decision if its something you want to invest your time and money in.

There was a free trial years ago. It was indeed shut down because there was no verification system and people could make as many free trial accounts as they wanted, which caused some problems.

Today there is no reason other than Turbine is short sighted and doesn't care that much about AC1. Every game has to deal with the problems AC1 has to with people making trial accounts and exploiting certain game mechanics. Turbine could deal with it and recode parts of the game to take into account trial players but they don't. Obviously Turbine doesn't feel the effort would pay off in the long run. At this point it probably wouldn't since AC1 is so old.

I really don't think Turbine cares too much for AC1. There goals are bigger. They want a hit like EQ and WoW. AC1 and AC2 won't get that many subscribers no matter what kind of trial or expansion they release. They are too old and the names are soiled.

the monarchy rank exploit should really be a non issue now.  With tinkering, you can remove any rank reqs from items now anyway.  They could easily make a free trial, but erase the characters once the trial is up if the person doesn't want to continue.

I just don't understand why Turbine seems to not want to make AC grow. I mean, the core community obviously pays the bills. Why don't they try to put a little extra change in their pockets?

For a free trial I'd definately give it another shot.  When I left
playing it, I couldn't justify paying the fee.  Maybe if I got to try
out some of the more recent changes I'd be able to reassess.

AC has more than paid it's own bills.  I personally think it's a big part of what is keeping Turbine around.  They paid off all their dev and hardware expenses years ago.  The game is nothing but maintence, small dev team and profit.  I really would like to see a free trial go out.  Maybe it would give them some more finances to make sure that LOTR online doesn't go the way Dungeons and Dragons online is going....

oh god... DDO... hah! I actually was in the CB for DDO, and it was a sheer disappointment.

I am also rooting for LOTRO, and can't wait for it.

As for the trial... if one ever pops up, I will see you all in-game ::::20::
