Poll: Improved models or improved gameplay?

UbermanUberman Member Posts: 340

The SWG development team has announce new, normal-mapped models for the game:

While this will certainly be an improvement in the appearance of the game, which would you rather have?

He does.  Normal maps are the new bump mapped textures.  Its normal now since its not exactly a ground breaking feature.

I think everyone would take gameplay over graphics any day.

But you are missing the point of the post. This is what the art guys are doing right now, not the coders. They can't really be blamed for the crappy state of the game.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, Templar.  However, I see this as an issue of priorities.  The flash aspect is nice, but where's the substance of the game?  I just feel that the game had far more substance pre-CU, and I never really had any believablity issues with the original avatars.

Just select the NGE option, Mal.  It is now the symbol of everything that has gone wrong with SOE's vision of the game, and so encompasses the CU as well.

poke poke slash anyone? or do artists not work on animations, i have no idea, but it makes sense to me.

Modelling and animators would do the animations typically.
The art guys usually only do art assests. For instance like the new textures, shiny building textures, the varies colored textures for when you customize your ride, etc...
I doubt very seriously that the SWG team even employs animators currently.

All animation was done with motion capture, and has since then been tweaked, clipped, cropped and otherwise re-hashed. I'm almost certain they no longer have the capacity to produce new ones. The data from original motion captures is still stored, but in raw form. This allows them to re-use it in different format, but they cannot re-create whole scenes with completely different dynamics.

If you look at all the statements they make, they always throw in "... we cannot do this right now ...". That is true. With almost non-existant budget and limited workforce, they cannot. There isn't enough time, resources or ROI. So they need to do something with what they have.

I liked the old models better. And I don't think I've ever heard anyone complain about them before. Everything else in the game, on the other hand...

Nice to see their heads are still lodged safely up their asses.

It will be another way for them to sell the SWG:Complete later this year.  A way to make it look all new and improved..../rolleyes  Change the paint but the crappy engine remains the same.  :)

Excellent point.  This is probably the exact reason why it is being addressed now at this time.  Normal mapping has certainly been around long enough for it to have been implemented long before now.
