I'm not at all sure if this is the best place to put this question but hopefully I will get some responses.
Hi, I'm currently in the middle of a dilema, I'm a video game/computer game junky. I'm up at college and getting bored with my pc and ps2 games so I figured I would jump into the MMORPG scene. I played Ultima Online a couple of years back and really liked it, but I'm hearing alot about Everquest. So I guess what I am asking is which is better? Or what are the pros and cons of each?
What I liked best about UO is the fact that it wasn't completely based on combat, you could make a living out of fishing, blacksmithing or other trades.
I bought Everquest online for ps2 and concluded that it was pointless and boring. Is the PC based version the same? Please I really would like to know! Any links to sites comparing the two would be great.
Thanks!

well if you played uo back in the day.. i wouldnt go back, it will totally ruin it for you, i played for 4 years and quit last year because it was just getting sad, and as i am a loyal uo fan, i hate everquest . But you can always try these
They all let you d/l the game from the site and try it free, for anarchy and endless ages, no cc is needed for the trial, neocron needs one
Anarchy Online - www.anarchy-online.com
Endless Ages - www.endlessagesportal.com
Neocron - www.neocron.com

I tried playing UO on one of the free shards the other day. But after having played some of the newer games, EQ, DAoC, Shadowbane, etc... it is very hard to play with those very dated graphics.
Try DAoC if you want to give one a shot just for fun. Of the ones out there right now, I would say it is the most all around fun.
But, then again, if you really want PvP hard core, go for ShadowBane. I am not a hardcore enough PvP player for that game. It is a total gankfest. Join a guild early on, that is the only advice I can give you.
I hear ya.
Maybe it as just the nightmare of starting over running in circles around an Ettin trying to get started
Or running in circles shooting arrows at a MOB and trying to circle around to pick my arrows back up with the MOB still hot on my tail.
Not sure, but it was just very hard on me. I couldn't bring myself to do it for more than 30 minutes before I remembered what drove me away.
"I am trying to see things from your perspective but I just can't get my head that far up my @$$."
dont play either... go play the Lineage 2 Taiwan OB then the English Beta when it comes out... its free and pwns UO and EQ
--------------------------------------
well UO has still the best economic, crafting, housing, pvp and whatever system that EQ doesnt and you can play UO for free on many cool shards....
graphic isnt everything ( Lineage II)
EQ to me is miles ahead of UO and many other games.
But its not very newbie friendly. It is way more friendly then when we played it as newboes in 2000 because there is more areas to do newbie hunts, easier interface, less penalties at low levels, classes better balanced, much less bugs, loads of folks that will give you 50pp and very good gear for free.
However lowbie hunting areas are a bit empty for the first 10-20 levels which means you might be forced to pick a soloable class .
"I am trying to see things from your perspective but I just can't get my head that far up my @$$."
lol you obviously havnt played Lineage 2 yet if you think graphics are all it has going for it ^^

Pick up EverQuest to kill time until WoW/UXO/L2 are released in +6 months.
Actually no.EQ is not about levels or loot.It can be that if thats what you want thus the word "high level" guilds who are just there for the solo reason of gaining levels and loot.Which is what some people actually like.
EQ is about adventuring ,questing and challenges.Which is its backbone. There are so many quests with great challenges and storylines. The dugeon crawls are so far unsurpassed in any mmorpg i ever played.
Yes a lot of things are group oriented thewre but i think thats a good thing i mean come on this is called a massively multiroleplaying game meaning you are meant to work together as a community just like real life. The doctor needs the farmer the farmer needs the doctor and so on in real life.
So my statement about it not been newbie friendly has nothing to do with the game aims/goals itself.
Been a group oriented game it requires you to group for most classes which is why its not newbie friendly because there are not many low levels left in it.
This is a syndrome suffered by all older games UO,EQ,DAoC,AO and so on.However most of this games levels/skill progress can be gained with ease solo (DAoC been kind of the middle of the spectrum).EQ for most classes can not.
I recently reactivated my DAoC account and did a /level 30 for a bard and even at 30 i found finding a group a nightmare and the bard could not solo at all so i did a /level for a necromancer and can solo with him.So it affects all older games just that with EQ most can not solo at all and this is a big problem for a new player.
Check my post prior to june 2003 i said the best game for crafting is UO .However SWG and horizons crafting are way better then UO now.
Housing well to be honest if you are playing a game to own a house then you get much bigger and better houses in a lot of the newer games.DAoC,SWG,horizons all have houses now which are way better looking and more spacious then UO houses.
PvP well thats a matter of opinon i think shadowbane and DAoC are better.
Economy dunno if UO ever recovered from the duping that occured in 1999/2000(i know from friends it did not as of late 2001) but the economy crashed to hell during that period and gold was almost worthless to seasoned players and made a horrid gap between the new players and old players.
EQ economy money wise is much more stable.
To be honest if you are going to buy EQ or UO based on the stuff listed above i stir clear of both of them and get DAoC or SWG instead.
EQ merits lie in other aspects but not those listed- quests, adventuring, interaction, challenge. It is for sure not a great game in housing, crafting ,pvp.
But neither is UO those categories(at least not anymore).
neither of the games are worth it....just wait a while till a good game like city of heroes or lineage 2 comes out....O yeah or wait for EQ2.

If you wait to do something until the last minute, your more efficient since it will only take 1 minute.
This is a good post by the way. I would vote for everquest simply because of more adventure and more classification. I am looking forward to Everquest2 very much and i think that it will be a very good game for noobies and experts bucase of reasons such as ;
There are good help tips not just tips such as "make money" lol
There are many experts who could probally help you and not just say again "make money"
And lastly, the game looks liek it will have even better graphics than the first one and the first ones were wicked.

I wouldn't get either as well. UO is just too old these days to actually have fun. While many say graphics dont make a game, outdated ones can also ruin the atmosphere.
I would stay away from Evercrack too not because of the game itself (although I find it a tad bit tedious and boring) but because it's being run by Sony Online Entertainment, and I can't trust those guys further than I can throw them
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
As you said , you have only watched your bro play and that is not reasuring that it is a good game. I , personally, have tried both of these games and they would just appeal to different people and different game styles and my say is that both of these games are good, but EQ is comming out with EQ2 soon and when you are waiting (if you are) i think that you should play EQ just to get the hang of it.
Elfseen.
The "EQ Experience" varies greatly. There as a lot more to EQ, FOR ME, than levels and loot. Mostly, for me, it was about having pals and doing things. I had a lot of friends and we talked about a lot of different things, we raided together, and sometimes we did stuff just to see if we could. Just because you didn't have that kind of experience in EQ doesn't mean that the whole community is bad.
Every class has a use, and most have multiple uses, and even though there are always people who believe they know the "right way to play" who will try to dictate what each class should do what, there are always other people who will prove that you can do quite a lot with whatever you've got. There is no "right class".
Grah! I can't believe I am defending EQ. It's a little like taking up for the school yard bully.
