Hey everyone :D I'm currently in between games, and stumbled upon this. I was wondering if anyone can give me a detailed description of exactly what this game is about, what it's like (from watching/reading)? I've watched a few movies but it doesn't seem different, so maybe someone could enlighten me? Is it anything like Huxley? Thanks in advance!

    The gameplay overall is a fusion of the RPG genre with shooters. The interface
    looks very much like a shooter with an aiming recital and simplistic design
    (Shoot, spell, change weapon) but is still very much an RPG. How you hit isn't
    determined by your aim with the mouse but your PC's stats. It also has a sticky
    lock on enemies so it isn't twitch based by any means, but you still get some
    shooter action (moving around to dodging or move for cover). The concept is to
    make the player more involved so fighting doesn't just get mundane like in some
    MMORPGs which just have you, in Richard Garriot's words "you look away
    from the screen and you look at your user interface and you go fireball,
    fireball, fireball, sword swing, sword swing, healing potion" for your
    constant level grinding.



       
    The game is going to use a mix of instancing and persistent. I'd guess some
    missions would ask you to take a control point on the front lines while another
    instanced one would have you with your squad be dropped behind enemy lines to
    destroy the enemy's power generators. The most notable feature is probably the
    cloning system. In many games you start to go one path and find that it isn't
    your thing or get bored and forced to start a new character. With the cloning
    system you are able to go back down the class tree branch to try out the other
    route anytime you wish.



       
    The battlefield is dynamic and will be changing constantly. The two forces will
    be going back to forth and reinforcements for either side will be determined by
    control points, missions, and such. Like in the above example, the power is out
    and now automated defenses are now inactive, making it easier to take point.
    These changes also affect missions available to you. The game is going to
    including a waypoint system so you don't spend some 30 minutes just to meet
    with your friends and built-in voice chat so you don't need to use another
    program.



       
    From what I know about Huxley, it is different in two large aspects. One,
    Huxley is more a shooter (Using the Unreal Engine 3) and twitch based so much
    more emphasis on skills over stats. Two, Tabula Rasa has a strong PvE over PvP
    focus, which may disappoint some. Huxley, while it seems to promise a good
    amount of PvE, the PvP is definitely there, advertising battles as high as
    100v100 for some crazy highflying matches.

    Edit: The game is an attempt to get rid of the level grind and make the game just more fun by streamlining the game experience. They say that you will be able to log-in, meet up with your friends (no matter their level) in minutes, then finish a mission within 30 minutes-1 hour and feel that you have acomplished something. Though this seem more casual Garriot has said that it is "a gamer's game" and that being hardcore doesn't have to  mean hours of grinding.



       
    P.S. Sorry if this is really long but I really wanted to try to get most of the known
    gameplay aspects of Tabula Rasa presented.

    Good post.

    There are innovative features in Tabula Rasa, I would expect nothing less from Richard, but TR is too much of a solo-player game design for me.  The reason I play MMO's is for the massive multiplayer aspect and community within a virtual world.  Things like instancing the ability to restart your character from any point and also jump into the game, even for the point of meeting friends, kill the virtual environment for me.

    While less significant, it does not help that it has a sci-fi theme.

  • I'm still extremely dissapointed that the majority of FPS aspects aren't going to be in Tabula Rasa. You can't rightly put "first-person shooter" anywhere near the name, now. Very dissapointing.

    Save us oh Huxley!

    I will admit that fusion is probably not the right word for Tabula Rasa. While it does have shooter aspects like interface and quick situational weaponry (See a walker? Rocket it. Oh no sniper, break out the rifle) it seems more like an RPG with some shooter aspects as far as battling goes. Conversely Huxley seems to be a shooter with some RPG aspects.

    Tabula Rasa is a RPG with a FPS look and feel - not a FPS with some RPG elements and they have never claimed otherwise.

    So hopefully Huxley will be the game you are looking for.

    I loved Neocron, but it is so empty now, and the graphics are awfull, yeah i dont care too much about graphics but i like them to be decent

    Im really looking up for this game OR Huxley

    I warmly hope the RP of this game isn't just about statistics, rules and other boring stuff more suited for wargames, but that the gameplay itself has RP.

    Was never a fps & will never be, people see sci-fi ranged weapons & instantly think "FPS weeee". There is a targeting reticle that is nedeed for skill rolls (to determine if & how much you damaged the npc).
    PvP is only(?) in this game as minor duels, main aspect is fighting against npc:s.

    but I don't get it , how dynamic these dynamic fields are ?

    I find this semi-autolock mechanism ingenious, and I can see tons of exciting content, but I'm not sure about the goodness of the action, where's the RP in the combat ?
