The one thing I would like to see in an MMO is the ability for groups of players to run a private MMO server. I know of many cases where private server exist but they aren't exactly legal either.
Think like Half-life 2, a player can get some money together and start his own server for Half-life, or some half-life mod. Now relate this to the way MUDs are done, players can run their own MUD servers and create and add things and some interesting things arise.
So basically this would allow communities to either band together and create their own server and play on it and the like.
So what do you guys think on this subject? Of course they could do the servers like Battlefield 2 "Ranked" servers are done. And it would make the community and bit smaller and you might run into the same players over and over again.
Difficulty level for the games might have to be adjustable, and PvP could be tricky. I would have like to see DDO go this route and they sort of did with the instanced stuff.

But on the serious note. I totally agree, but I have a question. Doesn't Phantasy Star Online do this sort of thing or am I being delusional again?
Siehst du mich
Erkennst du mich

ist noch ein Platz f?r dich
Ich suche dich
Ich sehne mich

Minions of Mirth

And then there's Neverwinter Nights. Strangely enough, I see this as the future of MMORPGs. With dedicated FPS servers like Joint Operations and Battlefield 2 hosting 200+ players at one time, it's only a matter of time before more traditional online RPGs start hosting 500 players at once. It may not be the same as the 5000 players per server standard of most comercial MMOs, but with everyone making their own persistant world, just how many players can you expect to have?
Looks like everything's about to come full circle.
blah
This isn't necessarily true. You probably wouldn't see online populations of 3000, but 200 or 500 would definitely be possible. The thing I think I would be trying to promote is not vastly huge servers with 25000 players total but smaller amounts, maybe 5000 or total players to sort of promote more social contact. And sort of a MUD like enviroment, you felt closer to the people who ran the server, you knew the players closer.
Also the code will then be open to competitors to study.
Sorry dont see it ever happening.

I agree.
The examples given are of games on one smaller map. When you have an MMO, then you should have a very large map consisting of multiple zones. Judging by those wanting to host these small maps, I'd say they are not really getting the idea of an MMO and should really just stick to playing games like Guild Wars and DDO (or NWN, Diablo and the like).
