Who actually does real roleplay?

I was just wondering how many people actually really roleplay in MMO's.  Just curious :)

I run a Linkshell in Final Fantasy XI. We have partial RPing in our LS and a role-playing forum at our website which is going well. It's safe to say that I don't role-play the entire time, but there have been times where we run some interesting RP sessions =)

I *try* when I first start playing a mmorpg. If any roleplaying community exists within a mmorpg I'll try and partake but generally it's way too hard to RP when 99% of the players you encounter don't. Most of the time if they even overhear you playing the part of your character they'll dish out a smart-ass remark or even attempt to ruin the situation or mock you. It does exist though and I've had some fun roleplaying in mmog's but for the most part it is not an easy or worthwhile(for me) task.

I enjoy doing so if the people around me roleplay but when you hear "yo lets go pwn that dragon quest" it ruins the vibe of roleplay.

I only met one real roleplaying guild, members of which actually roleplayed as dukes and knights and whatnot. Most people who roleplay only roleplay in a sense of saying "Thee," "Thou" and "Hail and well met!" Like "Hail and well met sir Ipwntjo0! Mayhap thy seen the latest episode of Futurama this fine eve?" That is not roleplaying.

With that said, personally, I could care less if people roleplay or not.

    Hail and well met!

From the two games I played for the longest - EnB and EVE, the latter has the better roleplaying community. I will be interested, however, in seeing what upcoming "roleplay enforced" games like Adellion are like.

I have to say I agree with what most of you have said.  In some games, RP is just not possible with some communities.  I do not participate much in it but it's fun every once and awhile to do some casual RPing.

    I did roleplaying in SWG....

Had a full set of storm trooper armor and went into Tatoinne cantinas asking for information about the insurgence in the rebellion.

Half of the kiddies were like "you're playing tha game asswad.....of course there's a rebels here...it's star wars aint it.

And this was on the unofficial RP server lol

But, then again, it was SWG.....90% of the game was run by kids

Roleplay in paper and pencil games filled in for the graphics, the story, the incidents and much of the general gaming experience.  However, with MMORPG's, roleplay is much different.  The graphics are visilbe, the experience is mutally experience without one person having to "fill in the details", you only see what you see.  Something only happens if someone can see it happen.  This has added new dimensions to roleplay.  So the concept of making up a story background for a character is bogus because in a MMORPG, such roleplaying cannot be seen or experienced.  If it didn't happen, it isn't real (or virtual or whatever).  Some folks do try to give personality to their characters, but that only comes as far as dialogue and interaction, and even then is felt not to be genuine.  Actions, not thoughts are the roleplaying in a MMORPG.

Once In a blue moon I meet some real RP'ers, and I will try and play along. Acting as what you'd expect from my current Class/race towards them..  But I'm not very good at it.. and many times I'm lmao of those I meet, if they are overacting, or simply playing so good that they really ARE the persona their game Avatar are representing. some people can really put them selves into another mindset..

I never go out and seek RP though.

I also enjoy roleplaying from time to time. I generally don't place too much effort into going out and seeking people with whom I can roleplay with, so most of my time is spent without the RP aspect. It's always fun when my friends and I decide to roleplay for a short while, but we never stick to it for more than 10/15 minutes at a time. It doesn't bother me that there isn't more RP'ing, but I have to admit, I think it would be pretty enjoyable to RP in game for long periods of time and often.

I tend to roleplay when I first enter a new MMO game, and if I remember to I stick with it I do so for my duration of my game play. I find it fun. There are those that think its foolish, or silly and poke fun at someone doing it, in an attempt to make an individual embarassed. Sad really, but I do get a chuckle when its the same people that run around talking in 733T d00d 5p3a|<. Now that is funny.

I do not feel foolish when I try to have fun. its a way to escape the trials of real life, and foolishness is in the eyes of the beholder. How can I feel embarassed when what someone sees are my pixels on their screen?

In every MMORPG I have played, I have roleplayed my character.  It is why I play the games.  I think the gameplay is fun and all, but being my character is what it's really all about.  I think it is possible to roleplay and get your characters personality across.  Even though the graphics are a limiting factor, there are always emotes, where you can do things that you may not see in game, but tell alot about your character.  In SWG, on Kettemoor where I play, there is more RP than I have seen in any other game to date.  I give a salute to SWG for giving us roleplayers more opportunity for roleplaying, but I really think it is the quality of roelplayers there that make it so much fun.

I'm sorry to those that might be offended by what I have to say, but it's just my opinion... I can't roleplay simply because it feels like the only reason is to be something or someone else, and I simply don't have any problems with the person I already am. I for one, like my life, like my own beliefs, like my own morals, and to act like something or someone else just doesn't make any sense to me... I understand 'acting' from a different perspective; actors, as an artistic portrayal of their character, embody the elements needed to tell a greater story and send a message to the audience... To me, that is just expecting way too much in a MMORPG, so I can't even put RPers and actors in the same category... Maybe RPGs are a good thing for practicing actors, but I guess I just prefer to have fun living my own life instead of someone elses...

The video games I am in, I enjoy more then anything, but they will always be just video games to me as I think they should be... No more or less. They're entertainment like a movie or a good book, and I can only enjoy them from a perspective that I value as my own... a role-playing game is designed imho to place you in another world to explore in your own home, and to acquire levels/items to see new things like any game, but I don't believe in acting any different in the game then I would in real life... Just my way I guess. To each, their own form of entertainment though...

I enjoy roleplaying.  I will roleplay when I meet new people, and as I hang around with them more and more then we slowly get out of it when the need arises.

I find it very amusing to be roleplaying when you meet someone in game and they run up to talk to you.  Act like you can't understand them, ask them where they are from where the speech is like that, etc.  Some people will switch to roleplaying as well, and others will try to make fun of you and leave.  The people who leave are the ones I want to leave, so it works to my advantage.

I feel really sorry for you if you hate RPers and you're going to play City of Heroes.

Aint nothing like a Man pretending to be a girl in sexy Wonder Woman panties trying to seduce you into flying in her Invisible Pocket Rocket....which, you will get a lot of in CoH
