If I could create my own MMORPG

Hi all!
I have read through different threads on the board over time and I was wondering. What are the important elements in an MMORPG for you? Is it a good storyline? The ability to role play? In game events? Graphics? PVE or PVP? Combat in space? Combat with vehicles? Grouping vs. Solo? I guess to be more accurate, given a blank slate. What would be the MMORPG you would build?

Just a thread to share ideas and thoughts.

Thanks in advance for your participation.

To me, I would say that the most important element in an MMORPG is the setting. A large, well-populated world with unique environments, history and lore really draws me into the game. One of the reasons I thought World of Warcraft was great was because the game's lore is so rich and has been fleshed out over quite a period of time.

Following this thought, I figure that the storyline elements would be a close second.

The most important this to me is the freedom.  I want to know that theoretically I could: hunt solo, in a group or on a massive raid whenever and where ever in the game world. I want to see live people around me- not just a bunch of bots or MOBs.  I want to travel a vast land mass if I want. I want to craft if I want.

If I do not have the freedom, I may as well play a single player game.

I think the most important thing for me is that the game has to have at least some origionality. Im sick and tired of seeing games where the only thing to do is lv combat. I think the worst thing that a lot of games have in common with combat type lvs is that there is such a big grind behind them. I cant stand when its going to take you 100 hours to lv up and there is nothing more to do. I also think story line is important and that the quests have something to do with the story, not just random find this and give it to him. Hope this helped =P

SWG had it right where you could build a house anywhere in the world and prett much create your own towns, SWG at the beginning had some great ideas hopefully they'll come back or else another game will pick them up.

"Is it a good storyline? The ability to role play? In game events? Graphics?"

All of the above. Storyline and roleplay, NOT involving pitiful static quests, being the most important to me. Graphics also important because I can't play an ugly game - I have to stare at it the entire time I'm playing, so it must be pleasant to stare at. Events...well, now one is just describing Ryzom. ;)

Overall, I'd like to see more unique and original environments/settings/races/stories. No more fantasy, please, it's been gang-raped to death.

    In a word, balance.

    Balance between game and world.

    Balance between action and story.

Balance between combat and commerce and exploration and socializing.

Balance between competitive (zero-sum) and cooperative (non-zero-sum) play.

    Balance between soloing and grouping.

Balance between guided play and sandbox play.

    Balance between convenience and patience.

Balance between tangible and intangible rewards.

Balance between short-term and long-term rewards.

Balance between benefits and costs for every capability.

    Must have balance, Daniel-san!

Let's add in another variable. What is the opinon if the games economy was mostly based on player created items. The only thing that dropped in combat were money and special items to enhance crafted items?

    Bad

It would be awsome if a game came out that combines the features of all the other games.

Like if the game had the quest system and many different skills that runescape does. Graphics, skills and enviroment of WoW. Also skills of cabal and maybe a cool pet system. It would be also cool if it had a veriety of different items like MU online has(wings, huge gloving weapons, etc..)

I agree very much with this post. I've said it before, the old swg and my time there will be the benchmark for every other game i play.

I agree with everyones thoughts on the most important aspecs of the game.

To sum it up we want it all. We pay for these games so we should expect it all and not settle for less.

If i'm in a fast paced mood i want good pvp.

If i'm in a laid  back sort of mood i want to explore and solo hunt or get into full crafting mode.

If i'm in a party mood i want to get a good crew together for some raiding.

The lore and history set the mood, so its like the basis of everything else.

Community. To me, the purpose of bringing games online is for players to interact with other players of all sorts of background. MMORPGs just make it more exciting by making a make-believe world with its own rules.

The topic of role playing always comes up in MMORPGS. What makes a good
RP experience for you? elements of RP? Is it something like in Anarchy
Online where you have a club where you can meet friends or what is the
experiecne you look for in RP?
