Outfitting your crew with fabled swords, lucky bandana's, whatever. The people of SWG of old were treasure hunters. Loche's of the MMO world.

    So, kill, loot, repeat?

Did you know your on an MMO forum board - now i ask you to name an MMO that is'nt kill, loot, repeat ?

Wow, you guys seem to be missing the mark here.

He's not blowing off anything, he's actually explaining why it was a mistake to adjust the course of the game in the manner that SOE did. Over two years had passed when the NGE came out, and people playing the game were already happy with what they had, so naturally there was a lot of animosity when things changed.

He also mentions "Star Warsy" and "Iconic" and all that crap, but he also has a point there. Players were hung out to dry when it came to actually doing Star Wars stuff, and we've more commonly known that as a content dearth since launch. It was almost always up to the players to actually play Star Wars (ie, "create your own content") and that strategy dismally failed.

With a sizable amount of such content, I honestly think SWG even in it's current state would be able to outpace EQ2. Instead, the devs are really unfocused and trying to achieve an "epic" feel like WoW has.

Again, he's not really bashing rather than acknowledging the mistake made. That's not a bad thing, since a candid admission like that means he'll probably steer clear of anything like SOE's methodology.

But on that note, I do find it a little humorous how many devs bash SOE's design practices, whereas SOE tends to bash other companies' marketing practices. SOE should just give up all its other MMOs and focus on pimping out EQ/EQ2. I think they've got lost causes all around.

    /agree

I'm not truly upset at the post, since I do agree with him regarding how SOE screwed up the game.

Well, by the time they made the changes, they had already filtered out the people who hated the game. So, they had a solid core of relatively happy folks. Then they went and changed everything.

However it is these comments that have now completely turned me off of PotBS

Moving around over the vast planets was painful. And the faction system was total crap.

And never once did I feel like Luke, Han, Chewie, or Rebel Trooper Seven From The Left.

I loved to explore the planets.  In fact, I rarely did any missions even when I was working on a combat skill.  Instead, I would wander and hunt various non-mission creatures for their resources and xp.  I understand that other people might not enjoy that, but exploration in a MMORPG is critical for me.

As many have said before, I have never wanted to play as the main characters.  Luke was a whiny little brat at the begining (and even to the end of the movies, to some degree).  Han was far more personable, but there were still things that he did that I wouldn't have done.  Chewie was a hairball (no offense to those who play wookies, but I'm hairy enough IRL and don't want my virtual character to be the same).

However, the Stormtrooper number Seven from the Left would have been a decent character.  And I'll agree that the GCW and faction system was flawed, I never felt like a true member of the Empire, more like a mercenary that they would occasionally hire.

Instead, I wanted to play Kenshu Ani.  The son of a ship designer on Corellia that ended up joining the Empire as a scout.  I used my experiences in the game to constantly adjust my bio.

I never wanted to be Luke, Han or Chewie maybe Rebel Trooper Seven from the left, though, he was trying to make his own way in the world, but I guess we all get our kicks from the game in different ways.

I assume he mean't exciting in that last sentence, although I could be wrong :P

    Quoted for truth.

I never wanted to be an uber Jedi god in SWG. I just wanted to be. Not everyone wants to be someone else, they want to tread their own path.

    Horrible analogy...

It is more like a restaurant that has only been serving crappy appetizers and telling their customer's for the first year that the main entree was coming "soon".  Once the entrees arrived, everything was undercooked, and overall very nasty tasting.  Dessert was then promised, and this took another two years.  In the end, all of these 'patrons' of the restaurant died of ecoli due to the 'cooks' having shitferbrains....

Yes, many of us. Honestly the original SW:G wasn't such a good game. Hear me out ...

It felt very little like Star Wars*. Combat was a mess. Everything was a grind. Moving around over the vast planets was painful. And the faction system was total crap. PVP combat was, of course, like 95% of MMOs, a total add-on to the PVE system. All games have imbalances in PVP, but what SW:G lacked was a basic fun combat model.

What it had, frankly, was a nice large set of professions, and a wunderbar crafting system IF you were a certain type of crafter and had a lot of time to spend on the game. Casual crafters were screwed because, as often the case, there is not much market for the third-best gun, and to make the first-best gun you had to get a mine down on that rare ore drop with the good starts back in May 2004. Distribution ad marketing also sucked at first, but got better as they added smarter shopkeeping features.

*Not like Star Wars I said above. It isn't the entertainer classes I mind, or the crafters. After all, you can live in the Star Wars universe and be a master baker if you want. But there was no way to live the core Star Wars life. The Empire was outnumbered. Rebels walked the streets. All leveling consisted of pontless story-free missions or mind-numbing repetitivity that honestly made pure grinding feel free and liberating. And never once did I feel like Luke, Han, Chewie, or Rebel Trooper Seven From The Left. And that is a waste of the franchise. They could have made a perfectly decent space-opera-western game if nobody knew it was Star Wars.

So ... why did SW:G get so much flak from the existing playerbase when it changed some of its obviously flawed systems? Well, by the time they made the changes, they had already filtered out the people who hated the game. So, they had a solid core of relatively happy folks. Then they went and changed everything.

It's like making some restaurant where eveything is really spicy, waiting until only spicy-food people patronize it, and then changing to oatmeal.

I mean, how could they take STAR WARS and not make a MMO to rival Warcraft, the dullest universe ever (except for all the other non-Tolkein orc-dwarf-elf games). Blizzard made a much better game, that's why, and it is a crime against STAR WARS how the game has ended up, beaten and bruised.

Anyway, yes. Master Doctor, Master Medic, Master Marksman, Master Entertainer (fun!) and whatever the heck else I tried, I was there. My bodystalks te server still, in thrall to a friend's crafting account, managing harvesters. It's a living ... in the exiting world of SW:G

He's sooo wrong...SOE are a bunch of idiots.  Don't try to fix something that isn't broken!! SWG was and IS the best mmorpg/game I have EVER played...until CU, followed by NGE.  WTF?! It should be called CD for combat downgrade...how many people left after the "CD"? More than 50% although they later started to rebuild their community...does anyone know why SWG was a terrific game?  IMHO its because of all the class possibilities and the freedom to clear your skills anytime you wanted and start over...then the NGE changed that too, I forget how many classes there are but it sure as hell ain't the starting 34! They are a bunch of idiots if you ask me.  If they hadn't changed it, I'd sure as hell still be playing..and you know what? I'm offended of his second sentence..."Honestly the original SW:G wasn't such a good game." He must be crazy! There were those who hated it, and those who loved it, and those who were in between...To tell you the truth, there were very few who hated it. Now that game is "worth as much as a dead rat in a cardboard box".

Okay, so SOE/LA took away all the things that were good and have yet to fix the things that where lacking.  Your point in publishing this being?
  • BlazinBladesBlazinBlades Member Posts: 1,214

That is an excellent statement, 100 percent true. Even just before the release of the NGE the population that was playing the game was minor in comparison to the population that left the game after the first year due to the fact the game sucked. Most players in here loved SWG before the NGE hit, well I am sorry to tell you that even your game was crap too, the vast majority of players thought your game sucked as well.

    Thank you for your time.

Damn byotch dat aint no friggn moon fool, dat be a friggn space station byotch.

I can not help that when this game was launched a huge amount of people went out and bought this game, I also can not help that a huge amount of players left this game after the first year because they thought it sucked. What I do find interesting is that most players here in these forums loved SWG before the NGE hit and they can not understand why people still enjoy playing SWG even after the NGE. Well it could be the same reason why the vast majority of players who left this game after the first year, wondered how anyone could enjoy playing this game like the players in here who liked the game just before the NGE. Oh and by the way from your silly post there, you may want to go and play WOW with all the other little kids. Thank you for your time.

Please quit ending every single post with this trite sh!t, it just makes you look like an idiot and undermines eveything that you type.  Not that defending a game on life support becuase you don't want to come to terms with the fact that you have wasted so much time playing it and that it will soon be gone doesn't do the same thing.

Thank you very little for your time.

He does have valid points...however I think it depended somewhat on how you played the game as to how much it felt like Star Wars to the player.  And he makes no mention of the CU and NGE and whether or not they were good for the game or better then the previous system, so it's not a pro NGE point of view either.  Wonder what his thoughts are on the current system.
  • BlazinBladesBlazinBlades Member Posts: 1,214

Back on topic I think his comments were excellent, but I do agree I do not know if he has played the CU and the NGE. I doubt though that he would like either the CU or the NGE maybe a mix of the two together. But I think that in a way he is saying that they should have just started with a clean slate and begun making a new game. Thank you for your time.

See, the thing about it is.....

Hes bashing another game and his game isnt even out yet.

This lead designer is only saying stuff like this to make his little pirate game look better.

The only thing that this accomplishes is making him and his little pirate game look bad. Oh ya, and another thing, It also turns ppl away from his lil pirate game that really enjoyed and loved pre cu SWG.

I know I was looking forward to that pirate game but um, I think Ill pass now.

Yes, that's what I was thinking as well.

Like it or not, I've been hearing about PoBS for a while. SOE, with all its flaws, released SWG, made money, launched expansions, adjusted to customers, while PoBS is still just hype.

    Unprofessional.

These people might have their own opinions, but it's not their place to express them. Quoting them for comparison might work in certain situations, but overall, you don't give personal statements on competitors. Nobody is perfect, no product ideal, no market too alien. Let marketing and PR deal with customers.
