I have what I feel is a legitimate question here and is not intended to be taken insultingly by anyone. I am wondering, as it has been pointed out by several people on these forums and the game devlopers themselves that Guld Wars is not an mmorpg, why is the game even listed here on MMORPG.COM? It should be removed and find another site for its rankings/forums more in line with its genre. Doesn't this make sense to you all? Then we don't have to have this debate all the time because it will have shown the answer to that debate once and for all. Peace.

You have to fully read what I said to better understand it.
1) It is a Competitive Online Role Playing Game (CORPG) 2) It is a Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game. 3) It is a Role Playing Game (RPG) 4) It has a LOT of MMORPG elements in it
How does that not belong on a MMORPG site? It's MMO, it's a RPG. This is a MMORPG site. Instancing alone does not mean it isn't a MMORPG. There are still a lot of common areas where you meet and chat with other people.
According to its creators, it's not. So, going by the ideas of the people who made it, it doesn't belong. Seems logical to me. If the devs wanted it listed as an mmorpg, they should've called it one. That's all I'm saying.

Its not the first time mmorpg.com adds non-mmorpg games to its list. they also listed Rakion. Rakion is just an online action game, it has a game/server select screen like Diablo. its definitly not an mmorpg. also SUN, which seems to be instanced and will also have a game/server screen is also on the list.

Go to the GW website (http://guildwars.com/support/faq/) and read the section entitled: "Is Guild Wars an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game)?" Their first line sums it up:
"Guild Wars has some similarities to existing MMORPGs, but it also has some key differences."
They don't say it is specifically NOT a mmorpg. They say what I wrote in my last post. It has characterisitics of a MMORPG and characteristics that are not like a MMORPG. If it is a MMO, and it's a RPG then it fits the basic mould of a MMORPG and belongs on MMORPG.com.
Anyone saying it isn't a MMO or an RPG hasn't actually played the game, or needs to read the definition of the two terms (this comment not aimed directly at you Zorvan, just to the general public as this topic has been brought up before).
As I said, my post were not meant to be taken as attacks on the game or insulting to its playerbase. Personally, I don't care if it is listed here. It's not hurting me. I also don't care what genre it is. Alot of people play it and find it enjoyable, which is all that matters. I was only stating an opinion on another ,easier way to end this ceaseless, although sometimes entertaining, debate over Guild Wars place in the world. I do not claim to know everything or be right all the time. When it all comes down to it, we are all, each of us, just one more opinion on the boards. Sorry if I offended. It was not my intention. Carry on, please.

Opinions themselves aren't inherently right or wrong. A good opinion is a person's perception of something at a certain point in time based on theri experiences (NOT what they guess, surmise, or have heard hearsay).
However, a lot of opinions are people rumor mongering, or trying to sound professional about something they have never touched. That or it is so blatantly wrong, you know the person is just shoveling it as fast as they possibly can.
A good opinion is never unwelcome, even if it is different. For an opinion to be good don't just say something like "GW sux0rs, <insert game here> rox0rs" or something stupid like that. And posting the same comments such as "Is GW really a MMORPG?" like many have before. That's not an opinion. That's someone trying to sound cool, and by trolling like that they get a kick out of the resulting posts it elicits. If you make it sound like you are educated, and have actually played the game, and have good solid evidence for your opinon, I say post it. Just don't post a one-liner, ensure that you have something to back up your opinion. A baseless opinion is a useless opinion, it needs some meat on the bones, or it will be assumed that the poster is just a troll trying to act cool and uber.
And one of the best pieces of advice.... show you take an interest in the forums by reading other posts, even if they go onto page 2 or 3. Often the question has been answered one or more times on the first couple of pages. And if something piques your interest, post it in there, and not a new thread. That way it'll look like you are actually taking time to read the forums and not just post blindly.

tests the official MMORPG test Dude, the game isn't massively multiplayer. its just Multiplayer. you can't play with a massive amount of people, you only share the game world with 8 people at a time, and about 50 when in town. nothing massive about that. geuss that test isn't as official as you like it to be.

I do have to ask.... have you even played the game? Because it certainly doesn't sound like you actually have....
For starters there are no shards or worlds or anything. Everyone plays on one big giant world. All 2 million copies that have been sold can play together. There are americas (mean North and South america) zones, european zones, various asian zones, and an international zone where anyone can get together with anyone else. Most of the reason the zones exist is to help keep languages together, so you don't end up in a town full of people speaking Japanese, and you only speak English. Of coruse the zones help keep you on servers closer to your home (other than international ones), then picking a server by some fancy name and ending up it is over in Europe and a lot slower than one from the US if you so live there. And it allows you to not end up starting a character and then finding out a friend plays it and is on another world/shard/whatever.
And also, if you had played it, you would know that there are different districts within a city.... simply transfer to another district. It helps with lag and load balancing to divide it up like that. You don't run into a town and then find sit and wait for the lag loading to catch up. The last live event they just had, had over 90 districts just in America's alone. They are dynamically created when one district (or many) reach a certain load of people.
And if you want to, you can chat to anyone in the game, wherever they are, if they are online. Again, because they don't shard the servers.
Also, over 2 million people have purchased this game, and I can choose to play with any of those 2 million people if and when I choose. That's pretty MMO to me. Just because you can pick 8 people to play with, doesn't mean it's not an MMO. Other games limit the number of people you can play with as well. SWG has party limits, AC has party limits, every game has a limit on the number of people you can play in a group with at a time. I have yet to find a game that doesn't have a group limit.
As you would say, "Guess it looks like your logic isn't as official as it could be."

Oh really? so, when I walk out of town or enter a mission, I see a lot of other people in the open field? No I don't. you don't play in one big world. you play on one big server, yes. but not in one big world, as every map is instanced and personal, with a cap of 8 players, and about 24 in bigger battles. you can only play with 8 people (or 24) at the same time, there is nothing massive about that.
All 2 million copies that have been sold can play together
No they can't. they can't play together. only up to 8 can play together, but lets say I have 8 friends, so 9 in total. can we play together at the same time? no we can't. hence guild wars is not an mmorpg. There are americas (mean North and South america) zones, european zones, various asian zones, and an international zone where anyone can get together with anyone else.
you don't actually PLAY in those zones, just chat and trade with a few merchants. also, the community is split up in districts.
Most of the reason the zones exist is to help keep languages together, so you don't end up in a town full of people speaking Japanese, and you only speak English. so what is your point? the people are split up in districts, that wouldn't happen in a real mmorpg. also, I have played Guild Wars, and there is a big chance I played it longer then you did. I played since the very first sneak peak, beta and have both games pre-ordered.
Actually, just because you play only with 8 people, it DOES mean its not an mmorpg. you might want to learn what the term mmorpg actually means. also, a chatroom still isnt an mmorpg.
Other games limit the number of people you can play with as well. SWG has party limits, AC has party limits, every game has a limit on the number of people you can play in a group with at a time. I have yet to find a game that doesn't have a group limit.
Other games limit the players allowed in a group, not the amount of players you can play and interact with. huge diffrence
As you would say, "Guess it looks like your logic isn't as official as it could be." Actually it is, as the DEVELOPERS have said the game is not an mmorpg.
I do have to ask.... have you even played the game? Because it certainly doesn't sound like you actually have....
Here is my Xfire account, knock yourself out:
http://www.xfire.com/profile/gameloading So you've played for 139 hours, since beta? That's pretty pathetic to be standing here talking about how much of a vet you are, and how much more than me you know this game. I'd hardly call you an expert on GW. That'd be like me saying I was an expert on Eve after playing it for 100 hours. I'd be laughed off the Eve forums. And I've played for over 500 hours since release (I wasn't using Xfire regularly until after release).
For starters there are no shards or worlds or anything. Everyone plays on one big giant world.
Oh really? so, when I walk out of town or enter a mission, I see a lot of other people in the open field? If you are going to respond to a comment, at least make it applicable. I didn't say anyting about how many people could group. Wasn't I saying how there are no shards/server/etc? That would be a more applicable thing to comment about. For that matter tell me what shard you are on, and I'll tell you what one I'm on. Maybe we can run a poll and find out what server everyone else plays on..... oh right. It's all the same one.
All 2 million copies that have been sold can play together
No they can't. they can't play together. only up to 8 can play together, but lets say I have 8 friends, so 9 in total. can we play together at the same time? no we can't. hence guild wars is not an mmorpg.
Obviously you haven't really played the game. You try and tell me that I couldn't load up and play with you, a guy from Japan, and other from other parts of the world? I can play with whoever I want to anywhere in the world. I have the option to play with anyone in the game I choose. The limit on the number of players doesn't determine an MMO or not. Read below for the REAL definition of an MMO to find out.
There are americas (mean North and South america) zones, european zones, various asian zones, and an international zone where anyone can get together with anyone else.
you don't actually PLAY in those zones, just chat and trade with a few merchants. also, the community is split up in districts.
Ummmmm... yeah you do play in those zones. If you are in america's zone, you play missions in the america's zone. If you are in international zone you play in the international missions.
Actually you haven't played it any longer than me, so get off your high horse. I was in since beta, and was frequenting the website long before then. I also had the game pre-ordered. What's your point? If your entire defense is "I've played longer than you" you've just failed.
And if you want to, you can chat to anyone in the game, wherever they are, if they are online. Again, because they don't shard the servers.

Show me the definition of MMORPG that says you have to be able to play in any sized group you want? Go on.... and give me the link that says that. Try looking up the definition of MMO and then tell me that. For example, check out the definition of MMO at wikipedia here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massively_multiplayer_online_game. What does that say? It says you can interact wiht hundreds or thousands of other people online. Hmmmmm.... sounds to me like you can do that with GW.
And show me where you can only play with 8 people? I am playing with everyone else that is online at the same time. I just choose who I want to party with. If you had been around since early preview, you would know what is going on in the game.
Not really, as per the definition of MMO, your point is useless and without any merit. Make sure you know what the meaning of something is before you endow us with your "wisdom."
So you are going to tell me that interacting doesn't including the Guild Hall, PvP battles, Missions, quests, exploring, and talking to people via the whisper system? How much more interactive can that be? Maybe you need to look up the definition of interactive before you start throwing big words around that you don't understand. Dictionary.com says interactive is:
That means that if you can act on each other (i.e. chat, do a mission, do a PvP battle, etc) you are being interactive with it. It's not a one-way street, it takes two (or more) to be interactive.
As you would say, "Guess it looks like your logic isn't as official as it could be." Actually it is, as the DEVELOPERS have said the game is not an mmorpg.
Show me the exact link and sentence where they say "it is NOT a mmorpg." Their website does not say that at all. In fact, here is a link to what they DO say about it. http://guildwars.com/support/faq/
Is Guild Wars an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game)?
Guild Wars has some similarities to existing MMORPGs, but it also has some key differences. Like existing MMOs, Guild Wars is played entirely online in a secure hosted environment. Thousands of players inhabit the same virtual world. Players can meet new friends in gathering places like towns and outposts where they form parties and go questing with them. Unlike many MMOs, when players form a party and embark upon a quest in Guild Wars, they get their own private copy of the area where the quest takes place. This design eliminates some of the frustrating gameplay elements commonly associated with MMOs, such as spawn camping, loot stealing, and standing in a queue in order to complete a quest.
Guild Wars takes place in a large virtual world made up of many different zones, and players can walk from one end of the world to the other. In Guild Wars much of the tedium of traveling through the world has been eliminated. Players can instantly return to any safe area (town or outpost) that they have previously visited just by clicking on it in the world overview map.
Rather than labeling Guild Wars an MMORPG, we prefer to call it a CORPG (Competitive Online Role-Playing Game). Guild Wars was designed from the ground up to create the best possible competitive role-playing experience. Success in Guild Wars is always the result of player skill, not time spent playing or the size of one's guild. As characters progress, they acquire a diverse set of skills and items, enabling them to use new strategies in combat. Players can do battle in open arenas or compete in guild-vs-guild warfare or the international tournament. Engaging in combat is always the player's choice, however; there is no player-killing in cooperative areas of the world.
Players in Guild Wars can play with or against players from around the world in the global tournaments and arenas. And while players are initially placed in a region based on their selected language (so that there is a greater likelihood that others will be speaking their language) they can join up in the always-available International District to form parties and to play with anyone from anywhere in the world.
Show me where in there it says that it is NOT a mmorpg. They simply say it has some difference from typical mmorpgs.
Maybe if you did a bit of research beforehand you might have avoided looking like the fool you do now. I've shown the true definiton of MMO and what the developers really said about their own game. What have you shown? Other than general ignorace? Not a whole lot.
Edit: Unbolded the entire post.... for some reason it was, which was really bright.

Lets see -
WOW - 10,000 people on a server. Guild Wars - 1,000,000 people on a server farm. So thats Massive - infact more massive than WOW.
Multi-player - 2 people playing together is multi-player, so its multi-player as well.
But still the whiner babies complain because you cant spend 3 weeks trying to get 40 people together for a raid.

Also, over 2 million people have purchased this game, and I can choose to play with any of those 2 million people if and when I choose. That's pretty MMO to me. Just because you can pick 8 people to play with, doesn't mean it's not an MMO.
As you would say, "Guess it looks like your logic isn't as official as it could be."
Actually it is, as the DEVELOPERS have said the game is not an mmorpg.
Lets see -
WOW - 10,000 people on a server.
