It’s all my fault

KelkyenKelkyen Member Posts: 45

As my first post on the mmorpg.com forums, I need to get something off my chest.

I started playing SWG back in August of 2003.  I loved the game, but I had my own opinions on how to make it better.  I wrote emails, sent in comments, and posted my ideas on the forums.

I didn’t realize the Dev’s would listen.

Profession combat balance, reduction or removal of Jedi’s alpha class status (and the snobbery that went with it) and a fps style combat system seemed like a good idea.  I wanted a lot of quests as an alternative method to grinding that I found boring.  I wanted my time in game to be like the movies that I grew up on.

The Dev’s just misunderstood me.  I didn’t write down my ideas in heavy detail, because I thought a simpler description would increase the chances they read my ideas.

It’s all my fault.

Remember the battle on Endor at the bunker in RotJ?  The gunfight on the Vette at the start of ANH?  Thats what I wanted.

I didn’t mean for them to take all the professions away.  It was fine, just the stackers, Combat Medics, and Jedi needed to be down powered.  The crafters needed some love, mainly Droid Engineers.  Doc’s needed to get back in the hospitals, not be in starports.  Like it was the first months of the game...

I thought a fps style would make combat more fun.  Remember in RotJ when Luke fought the Rancor?  He only hit it three times (bone in mouth, rock on finger, door on head) but the suspense was there.  Pre-CU/NGE combat blew (macro on, get sandwich, come back in 5 minutes) and I thought it needed to go.

As for Jedi, I thought it should be earned by being honorable and helpful, not being the best at macro’s.  I hated what the hologrind did to the incredible community of the early months.  Once the village was out and everyone active on my friend list (aprox 150 of 250 players back then) I guessed that I would be the only non-Jedi veteran I knew in 3-6 months.  I didn’t want to see 100 lightsabers and 1 rifle.

I was a roleplayer, and wanted more roleplay in the game.  I wanted to be an evil Imperial commander who oppressed the people, and I wanted my evil plans to be thwarted by the good guys at the end of the day.  I didn’t know the Dev’s didn’t understand what roleplay meant.  I meant acting... not iconic professions.

I, Kelkyen,  apologize to every current and former player and the Dev’s of SWG for ruining the game with my misunderstood ideas.  I failed every one of you, and I’m sorry.

I don’t ask for your forgiveness, because I don’t deserve it.  I ruined the best game and the best community that ever existed in a mmorpg.

Kelkyen

Lol. Look buddy, SOE doesn't listen to anyone - that includes you.

Even IF you had anything to do with the ideas behind the NGE (and that's a big IF), SOE is wholly and ultimately responsible for the production, implimentation, and failure of the NGE.

    We have a winner!

How much of what went wrong with SWG was our fault for demanding so much from the game and its creators?  Imagine the gobs of info Tiggs and Thunderheart went through each day, collected, and passes on to their bosses.  Think about a Dev jumping on the forums with some info, then getting 20+ pages of replies from rabid players.  How could they do everything we wanted, what needed to be done, and what was already planned?

We had protests, people wrote to Lucas himself, CBS and CNN wrote articles about us, HoC Chats were and still are filled with bitter questions and demands.  Now players are rubbing an emulator in their faces.  Its humiliating how we acted to them, and sent them scrambling to get something done quickly.

I'm not saying SOE didn't make mistakes. ToOW was handled badly, and there is no excuse for that.  Copying WOW was another mistake, as we didn't want to play WOW we wanted SWG.

SOE did listen to us though.  They added in alot of the features that we wanted.  To meet our demands, they gutted the game.

There are over 200,000 posts on the Jedi forums for SWG, the next highest are Pilot with 100k, and Bounty Hunter with under 50k.  Everyone agreed there were too many Jedi, but how many players gave up Jedi as a result?

Oh, you "earned" it?  You played so much you deserved to get what was comming to you?

    Well, we got it.

I've heard some games removed their forums, to stop the bickering.  Maybe thats what SOE should have done back in 2004.  Perhaps then we would still have the game that was originaly planned.

I complained, sent in comments, and filled their heads with my ideas too.

We (me, you, SOE) are to blame.

We loved that game to death.

    Good point.

If they aren't listening to us now, especially when we've had such a public forum for our outrage...

Do you really think they listened before?

Whatever people believe it's happening now, has already happened and been signed off at least 2 months ago. The development pipeline is long, probably 6 months from design to live. Whatever happens in forums is pointless. Even if they do acknowledge it, in order to provide any change, it takes too long.

NGE was presented at least in time for CU, if not before. This is why it never mattered, if Jedi couldn't grind, or if they hoarded the rryat trail. It never mattered that Krayts were removed, many professions never got adapted to CU or the overall lack of actual improvements. CU served only one purpose, to convert world into level based system, to introduce the new cooldown based combat, and to normalize all stats. Nothing more.
