My computer has 512 mb ddr ram, my book tells me it supports up to 3 gigs of ram. My cousin is telling me, 3 strips of 1 gig ddr ram will be the same as 6 gigs of ram, and will burn up my motherboard.

does this sound right?

I do believe your cousin is a fool.  3 gigs of memory is like .... 3 gigs of memory.  What he might mean is the chips real close together on your mother board will heat up like crazy and fry themselves.  Buy some silver heat spreaders for the ram and make sure you keep the inside of your case cool and you will be fine.

Unless you're overclocking your RAM like crazy, having all the sockets filled wouldn't be an issue, so yeah... your cousin doesn't know what he's talking about.

I have Corsair XMS Extreme Memory [512MB DDR400] and it comes with a platium heatsink on it.  image
