'm having the following issue while playing DAOC:
Every now and
then (fairly infrequently, once every couple of hours?) while playing
the trial version my entire computer will lock up. I was also getting crashes every
time the choice to pick between hibernia/albion/midgard showed up, so I
had to have one of my friends make my character for me. Once the
character was made I was able to log in and I get the crashes every
couple of hours as I mentioned.
System Specs:
AMD Athlon 3200+ processor
GeForce 6800 vid card (very nice one, bought it for a lot of money lil less than a year ago)
1 GB of ram
Windows XP Home
What I've tried doing:
I updated to my latest video card / motherboard drivers
I updated windows fully as of last night on windows updates
I have played around with the Compatability settings under the
properties of the daoc executable (as per something I read in the tech
support archive)
I checked to ensure my directX is the latest version, and it is, 9.0c
I've reinstalled the game and the update patch
I
play a ton of games on my comp (including other MMOs such as World of
Warcraft, Shadowbane, Ultima Online, etc. and I've never experienced
this problem before.
Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks.

Wow you certainly have covered all of the common basses. Your specs are more than enough to play DAOC with no problems. I did a little research and found these:
After I select a server to play on, my computer freezes. What could be the problem?
To bypass this problem, disable your on-board video card in the Windows device manager. For Windows 9x, ME, perform the following:
Click
Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager Expand the
Display Adapters and highlight the on-board display adapter. Right
click the on-board display adapter & click on properties. Under
device usage, select "disable".
For Windows 2000, XP, perform the following:
Right
Click MY COMPUTER and click Properties. Select the Hardware tab and
click on Device Manager. Expand "Display Adapters" and highlight the
on-board display adapter. Right click the on-board video & click on
properties. Under device usage, select "disable".
Other than that the only things I can think of is anti-virus or firewall. If you have an anti-virus program running that is set to autoprotect (espically Norton), then disable it. I know my wife had probelms with DAOC using the XP firewall so it was turned off - I hate software firewalls. Hardware is the way to go for firewalls.
If none of the above, then give them a call/email to

DAoC Support
I'm not running any antivirus or firewall stuff either =/
I emailed support this morning but they replied asking for some stuff from my computer (a copy of my DXDIAG results so they can see all of my system specs + driver info + other stuff)
Unfortunately I'm not home right now (at work) and won't be home until after the tech support closes =[ but i'll shoot them off another email tonight in hopes that I get a quick response tomorrow.
Mainly I was just posting here incase someone had a similar problem and could shed some light on this =]
I got to level 5 in an hour or so last night and had some decent fun, only thing I'm not super excited about is the interface itself... I'm still getting used to it but I don't feel like I have very easy control of what I see on my screen (plus i wish i had three hands!). I'm finding the arrow keys are the easiest things to move my character with, but i need my other hand to attack stuff with "Q" and press my combat abilities on the number keys.. which doesn't leave me a free hand to rotate my screen with my mouse to not get blocked continuously by trees =/
Overall seems good tho!
You might also want to change your keyboard commands to something easier. On the character login screen (if you can get there) click on options and then keyboard. You can then set any key to whatever you want.
Personally I use my left hand to move the arrows and then use my mouse to click on things including what is in my quickbar. It is certinaly not the fastest, but it works for me.
