Hi

Hiya, im Thalioncirth.

Some may have seen me on the develper forum, i am a MMO developer and am working on a new MMO. I have been spending many years playing MMOs and have decided that i would like to give FF a go since i love the ff games and have played them for many years. Lets face it the best way to make a great MMO game is to play great MMO games (IE FF)

I have yet to join, i have brought the game and upgraded (that took hours) and plan to start the game tommrow. I was wondering fi anyone could provide me with some basic advice etc and reveal to me what Linkshells are???

Thanks guys n Gals

well for one thing you should figure out how to move that for sure... solo till about 10 to 12 and then find a party that isn't made of crazy poeple... make lots of friends as well...

Linkshells are essidentially FFXI's guilds or clans... they allow you to instantly chat with a large group with out haveing to be in a party together... i would suggest trying to get into one.... there fun or yeah.... tarutaru's rule the earth the sea and the sky!!!! W00T!

Well, let's see here. Talk to all the NPCs, and listen to what they have say. Some will give quests, others will explain game mechanics to you.

Talk to the gate guard with the letters after his name (I.M., T.K., W.W.) before going out. Ask him to cast Signet on you. As long as you have the Signet buff on you while fighting mobs, they'll drop elemental crystals, which are worth good money at the Auction House.

As a general rule, buy equipment and supplies from the NPCs, sell your loot on the AH. Most mobs drop no money, and even the beastmen don't drop much, so selling your loot items is going to be your income. Sometimes it's more profitable to sell items to the NPCs or to buy them from the AH, but not often.

Keep all the Beastmen's Seals you get. You can't use them now, but they're worth a lot later.

Linkshells are user-created chat channels. You can buy an unopened linkshell from a vendor in each of the three starting cities (they cost 8000 gil). When you open (activate) it, the Linkshell becomes Ex (soulbound, in WoW parlance) and you choose a name and color for the shell. You can then equip the shell to join the chat channel. You can also use the shell to create linkpearls which you can give to other players; they can then join the chat channel by equipping the pearl. You can also break somebody's pearl, thereby kicking them from the linkshell. You can also upgrade a linkpearl to a pearlsack; sackholders can also create and break pearls, but only the shell owner can create, demote, or break perlsacks. You can only have one shell/sack/pearl equipped at one time. FFXI player names have a status icon on them, indicating such things as the character is bazaaring items, is away, is new, is a mentor, is a GM, and others. If you don't have another icon, you'll show your linkshell if you have one equipped, with an icon in the shell's chosen color. Linkshells are the only way to talk to other people not in the same zone as you, except for one-on-one tells to a specific player and party chat; when you talk on linkshell, your message goes to everyone with a shell/sack/pearl for your linkshell equipped. Players commonly organize themselves around their linkshells, and they have much the same functions as guilds in other games.
