New to MMORPG - what's the best game out there?

Morning all,

I'm new to these types of games but am keen to get involved in some exciting gameplay in an exciting new world.

I discovered this web site after reading a Philosophy forum and reading how one man believes that we are all living in a computer simulation such as an MMORPG, and that our universe is just one of these, but more advanced, built by an alien race.

Now I'm not saying I believe him but it certainly got my attention and made me want to check out one of these games.

So - Can anyone advise me which of the games is the best?  I'm sure there are some experts on here.  I've read a review of Horizon but it seems to be lagging behind the best - so which are the best?

    i'm not telling you exactly which game has which features, i'm just giving you a hint: on the front page theres a box with "highest ranked rpgs". click on the names to learn a bit more. read the threads in the corresponding forums (NOT the main forum)

    Honestly, that rankings chart is a little off, Finaly Fantasy, Star Wars Galaxy, i just don't see how they can rank that high.

    Back to your question.  Depends on what your looking for mostly.  If your more of an adult, love spreadsheets (semi joking here) and spaceships, I highly recommend Eve Online.  It is though, mostly a more mature type game (well, unless your become a pirate and like blowing people up).

    takes time to achieve things, but well worth when you do. 

    The best way though, just read the reader reviews.  Should help give you a feel for the game, also check out the games forums on there main websites, give you an idea of the active player base (star wars -- non subscribers blocked, what does that tell u, final fantasy -- they don't even have an official forums...really, i think square cares more about their japanese players than us english speaking ones)

    Well after a couple of hours looking at the different games and reviews, I'm most keen on Anarchy Online - I think I prefer the Sci-Fi side of things more than Fantasy.

    Can anyone tell me their thoughts on this game, and do I need Shadowlands as well to make the game worthwhile? Or is it OK on it's own?
