Anarchy Online - Do I need Shadowlands to make the game complete?

After much reading of reviews of all the different games, I think Anarchy Online is the one for me.  I like the Sci-Fi setting.

Can anyone tell me whether I really need Shadowlands too, to make it complete?  Of is Anarchy Online ok on it's own?  I am about to download the free 7-day trial and I don't know whether to get the 650Mb one (AO on it's own) or the 1.3 Gb one with Shadowlands and Notum Warsa on there too.

Are these 'add-ons' to the origoinal Anarchy Online, and are they needed?

They are not necessary, and AO on its own is better than shadowlands, but funcom have made it so if you stay on after the 7 day free trial, you pretty much need SL otherwise your char is gimped. If i was you i would just download the original AO for now, and if you feel the urge to download SL when you've got into the game then go ahead.

You will need the expansion to get Perks, and Perks add a pretty decent amount of ability and exentibility to your profession. There are nice items that require Shadowlands installed as well, but you can live without those.

The old AO and Shadowland are almost like 2 completely different games. Aside from the Perks and a few items, they really aren't interdependant upon one another. You definitely can live without Shadowlands, but I would recommend getting it.
