Why is it ...everytime a small company does well it gets bought out by one of the giants ?

Do the employees get to stay on ...or are they screwed...

They usually are welcome to stay and run MOST of the game the way they want.  However, they usually get a very big ego, start doing mistakes and keep wanting to push them forward.  Too many mistakes come into conflict with their boss, who might not know much, but can recognize mistakes.

Then, they go out, believing that they were right, that their boss are evil and didn't know shit.  Some even start a new project, filling it with their mistakes that they believe are great idea.

The gaming industry is one of the less stable industry.  The average Game Designer burn out in two years and many leave the gaming industry althogether.  It is very hard to have someone think on much stuff, find the right solutions, yet remain humble enough to accept that sometimes, they do mistakes.

Usually independent game developers want their company to be bought by one of the big publishers. It gives them much more job security. Independent game developers must rely on most if not all of their games selling well. If one or two of them don't, they could all be out of jobs. If they were owned by a big publisher, those one or two duds wouldn't hurt nearly as much, and most of them will probably keep their jobs.
