Erm I think you totally misunderstand what planetside is about .It is a MMOFPS not a MMORPG and it been stated many times.
First skill based i dunno what you mean by that.It has certificates which you spent and gain skills in .So dunno how you want it altered.
It is not about levelling (though some people are trying to make it so).Originally there was not even battle rans to gain when in concept. It was suppose to be get your points and get cetified in what weapons you want. But they realised folks will get bored and made the certs.
Mobs- again i refer to you the fact its a FPS there are no quests, mobs or mmorpg aspect stuff in a FPS.Think UT2003 on a larger scale and you got planetside.IT is a FPS once again.
PvP areas???????Now have you played the game .Everywhere is a pvp area but your santuary.ALL contients are pvp you see an enemy you better be ready to fight or he will kill you.
I bought PS played it around 5 hours and was done. Its really to complicated for me all the lvling i mean come on why have that in a shotter? Ppl are pulling out these great weapons while i have a little smg or whatever. Maybe im just to used to Counter Strike but I didnt like this game.
I love playing planetside. It is the ultimate war simulator. There is nothing like having huge battles with hundreds of people (good internet hookup required IMO) and bullets and tracers flying everywhere. Its the Normandy invasion everyday in Planetside.

Planetside problems lies mainly in the imbalance. In say UT2003 or quake all chars are basically equal in planetside not so .
While the idea of one weapon counteracting another is good some empires are too powerful. You have the NC that are overpowered and the VS way underpowered leading people to flock to the NC.
I have always had a hard time with the concept of paying for what essentially amounts to Quake/Unreal/Tribes style gameplay with a $9.95+/month ticket.
I can play that kind of game for free, with better engines, every day.

However you can't participate in 200+ person battles in quake/unreal or tribes daily. Back when I was playing I was several times in battles where you didn't even have to aim just shoot the same direction everyone else was shooting and you would hit an enemy heheh.
Fun as hell but like any fps you get bored of it, althought I am thinking of giving it a go again now. Havent really been in a fps mood for the past months but now I think I am.
I dont think games like quake, unreal, and BF1942 are in the same ballpark as Planetside. I think it is well worth the money. Just today I was playing, our outfit decided to go after a measly tower, so with about 50 of us we began to attack it. It was defended by about 70 of their guys, it was a pitched battle. I litterally spent about 5 minutes stuck behind a rock as i advanced because there was a wall of lead in front of me. It amazing to see so much firepower. The battle lasted over an hour, man i was beat after that. The ebb and flow of the game is fantastic.

I understand there are distinctions. I just can't see them being worth $10 a month.
