Does anyone know of the first MMORPG that was made that started this genre of computer gaming? I'm thinking maybe Everquest? or Ultima online? but thats just my thoughts, i dont know too much about back in the day

Here's a series of articles gamespy produced about the general history of mmog's. There really wasn't one that started it all, the whole online gaming concept has grown into what it is today. How you define the "massive" in Massive Multiplayer Online Games is hot topic of discussion and has had different meanings throughout the history of gaming but that could be a whole other discussion in itself. Here's the link that discusses the history:

UO was the first huge hit graphical MMORPG.  But there were many MMORPG's before it.  (UO is about a year older than EQ).

There were MUD's which were played on mainframes that used text based interfaces and MUD's played via telent on the Internet since probably the 70's, maybe earlier.

Also, AOL and the other big one that is gone CompuServer had some MMORPG type games.  GemStone warrior and some others.  I never played any of them though.

But UO was the first big graphical mainstream MMORPG.

Wow, madjake, you posted that link about 8 seconds before I finished my post.  After reading your article, I feel that I gave a decent answer off of the top of my head! :)

meridan 59 pre dates UO and is basically a  bit like UO.

However first to bring it to mainstream is UO in 1997.

EQ was released  in 1999.AC in 1999

    DAoC 2001.

Not only out of context but a highly subjective opinion. Seriously doubt many would agree.

Great site, I used it as the primary basis for my research paper for college last semester. I would reccomend that anyone interested in the history of MMORPGs read this.

My paper was actually about the history of Fantasy Roleplaying Games, so I went back as far as Chainmail and Dungeons and Dragons and the wargames that came before them. But for the MMORPG part, I used this site.

Started with MUDs, but as far as graphical goes Meridian and The Realm are pretty old.  UO came out in 97 I think, EQ in .... 99 ? I forget.

UO was probably the groundbreaker in MMORPG, followed by EQ. I never played EQ  though I heard it was similar

As far as defining moments that changed the industry it had to be EQ. They set the pace and foundation for everything we see now. I was a tester way back then when Verant had it and it was a mess no doubt but the game set a stage for gaming and honestly UO was incomparable to what EQ gave you but I only lasted in the game 9 months after release. Anyone thinks SOE or Horizons CS is bad you should have seen Verant back then!

Hmm. MUDS, MOOS, and Meridian 59 are the forebears of the genre. UO has pioneered the standards and elements of MMORPG, and Everquest with its graphical 3D splendor and bastardized D&D gameplay has catapulted the genre to the masses and ensured its popularity.

"...Meridian and The Realm are pretty old..."

I'd have to say that MUDs started it all (without reading that article posted by Madjake). I believe GemstoneIII was around for 15-17 years maybe? I started playing it 4-5 years ago I think... but there is one that beats GS (in age anyway)...

p.s. I think Meridian59 is probably the oldest -graphical- "mmorpg", but I'm not sure about that. It just seems like it's been around forever. Maybe started in 1959? image

I believe Meridien 59 was the first... I remember playing "The Realm" when it was free many years ago...  I didn't even know it was a MMORPG... it was just a neat RPG online. :)  Even before the Alpha UO I tested back in 1994... *shows age* lol

    good question...

    Well...

After the Egg and the chicken,  there come Gary Gigax and TSR with a few others old games like Oeil Noir, Warhammer and so on...

On the computers the Bard`s Tale on the C64 was prolly the first REAL RPG on a computer game, althought by no mean the first on the topic, I remember stuff on the Vic 20 althought they where far from a RPG, as many others games start the genre.

Then come SSI studios with the famous Golden Box(Pool of Radiance & friends, Champions of Krynn & friends(The Dark Queen of Krynn and Death Knight of Krynn been my favorites and groundbreaking, both of them) who where the first to actually mass create RPGs games on a regular basic...(removing nothing from Might and magic hehe).

Then it is fllooding, online I recall playing on BBS!
