my advice... try it some time!
~neopets~ is a good one.. thats just good for time consuming days.. like if you have left school and have nothing else to do!
I'd have to say Ultima Online because it was the breakthrough of MMORPG's. Besides NWN for AOL and Meridian 59, UO was what started it all pretty much and thus it began the era of the art of being an evil PK.
But I enjoyed EQ1 very much as well. As well as SWG before NGE and before CU hit also.
1. EvE Online : love the no rush enviroment and the game client itself is way stable in windowed mode. But sadly the death penalty is way too heavy for a casual player.
2. Anarchy Online : ahh the humor within the Rubi-Ka. Almost like an Action MMO i wanted to play, high insane level cap. Also, good things come with a bug... the game client is way dated and caused lots of hiccups.
3. EQ2 : So many MMORPG i tried.. EQ2 got me glued. Housing, Heritage Quest.. solo instance :O ahh.. its like a dream :P . Certain place is quite laggy due to my system spec so that isnt a barrier for me.
All canceled. Waiting on Warhammer Online : Age of Reckoning.
I'm a Blizzard fan so my answer is WoW. Just try to ignore the spoiled scandinavian kids and your in for one hell of a journey.

1.) EQ - This is because I guess I played it just after go live and it was my first MMORPG. I still have friends I made back from the first week of go live. 2.) SWG - Say what you will but Beta to Pre-CU was a great time. You must admit though, this game did have some ground breaking features. Housing, Factories and skill tree. 3.) Anarchy Online - First Sci-Fi game I played, the final beta event was a hoot. But overall until shadowlands came out it was a solid game.
1. SWG - pre cu of course. It had the open sandbox idea where I could do and be anything i wanted, sick of fencer? Np grind up Swordy in 2 days. Could be a crafter and fighting class at same time. Sure i was grinding for jedi most of the time pre-cu but it was still a great game
2. Dark Age of Camelot - Always find my self going back to this one when I am bored with all the other mmmorpg's out there . RvR was always fun, I even liked the pve.
3. Ragnarok Online - I only played this game in alpha and beta, but will always have fond memories of it being my first PC mmmorpg (around 1999 or so).
My current favorite MMO is City of Villains, for many reasons.
The character editor is the most amazing thing I've ever seen in an MMO... I literally spend a good hour or two designing a new character when I make one. In addition to appearance, the archetype / power pool system is great and allows for tons of flexibility. I love that every time I get a new ability, it is a true new ability, and now just a new rank of some spell or skill I've had since I was 5th level.
The atmosphere is just great. I'm a huge comic book fan and I have collected them for decades. Being able to play an MMO in a comic book universe is just great, and environments and stories that make up CoV/CoH show that the developers are a bunch of true comic book fans as well.
The people are friendly. There's no loot to worry about (I'll never play another game, ever, that ends up with me using a freaking spreadsheet to track DKP points. Ever.) and there's no "perfect" group (finally a game without the tank / dps / healer setup). It makes it simple to log in, grab a few people and head out and have some fun busting heads.
The RP community on the unofficial RP server, Virtue, seems to be a fun bunch of folks. I wind up my evening after running missions hanging out for a few minutes at the Pocket-D night club meeting people and I've met quite a few friendly, fun people that way.
The PvP is fun. The game wasn't initially designed for PvP, and it was kind of shoehorned in, and is admittedly rough and unbalanced. I don't care. It's Superheroes fighting Supervillains! Watching everyone flying, running, and jumping around, using great looking powers against each other, fighting on the ground, in the air, on the tops of skyscrapers... it's just great.
The freedom of movement in spectacular and "feels" right. I love the standard FPS "wasd" + mouse controls. I can't stand games where my movement feels restricted and awkward. The travel powers are all enormous fun.. flying, leaping over buildings, running at insane speeds... good stuff.
The graphics are absolutely gorgeous, and personally I like them better than any other MMO currently out. I used to think the game just looked ok, but then I upgraded from my old nvidia 6600 to a 7600gt, turned on all the options, and my jaw dropped. It's one beautiful, smooth game.
The story! I mean come on.. the game has a PvP zone where hideous mutant creatures spawned from the corpse of the Hindu god Shiva, who (in the game) was really a planet devouring alien along the lines of Galacticus. Shiva was destroyed approaching earth and his corpse crashed down in Bloody Bay, a former slave trading stop in the 18th century that is now a battleground between factions competing to collect pieces of Shiva's corpse for experimentation. The game is filled with all sorts of wonderful, imaginative, over the top, epic storylines and it makes it really enjoyable.
Can you tell I like the game?
As far as my favorite MMO of all time, I'd probably have to say Everquest. I played the game off and on for three years. The game had a lot of faults, and I probably would never go back to playing an Everquest clone style game, but at the time it was amazing... if for nothing else, simply for the absolutely -huge- game world. The first time me and some friends took our characters through Highpass Hold and walked down the ramp along the side of the mountain down to the East Karanas will probably forever be my favorite moment in an MMO.
The game had it all. RP, economy, action, no bloody levels, no bloody classes, no bloody grinding...although there is a sort of player that will always find an excuse and a way to grind
The customability of you characters is simply...Amazing. Not just the best i've seen in a MMO, but in a game in general. You can change the shape and size of your characters build which is a great feature.
The graphichs are very amazing as well as the scenery and such. The lag has lately been decreasing lots which is good. Hardly any lag on mine now.
The powers that you can choose from are numerous, as well as the primary and secondary powersets. Make your character fit you, pretty much. Costume, playstyle and all.
Also, the community is also very nice. It's easy to find a SG and some cool people to team with. The controls are also very easy to master.
The PvP action is very good in CoH/CoV. IMO the PvP leans a little more to CoV, just because again IMO CoV has better powersets and powers and characters for PvP.
1. EQ: My first time in Everfrost with my barbarian shaman, I was in awe. Still the most immersive environment rich game out there, with dynamic weather effects (rain and snow), though graphics and interface are dated. There are a vast number of zones to explore (I never saw them all) and each one is distinct. This game is for the true explorer and roleplayer. I still return every so often just to walk through the environments. Everfrost, the Ocean of Tears, Velious. Kedge Keep also. Still the only underwater dungeon I've seen.
2. EQII: Could have been much better, but still very much to admire. The class designs are the best I've seen. No more static characters you set on auto-attack and come back 2-minutes later. You still end up generating a fairly static attack pattern, but there's some dynamism in different encounters and very little wait time where all your abilities are in cooldown. You're at least constantly doing something. This is actually still my current primary game. With the latest changes, harvesting and crafting are actually quite fun, and housing has always been a great key feature of the game.
3. City of Villains: Awesome character generation. Fun character abilities. After about level 20, levelling starts to become painful and most missions mundane, just copies of all previous ones. Soloing becomes too difficult. Plus, for being super-powered, the game's generic minions are too tough and make you feel less than super-powered. Lacks socials and other non-combat activities that would greatly increase the game's fun. Still a good game to play on occasion.
4. DAOC: PvE was dull, at least in its first two years when I played, but RvR was great fun when you were able to find balanced opposition. Unfortunately, it was most often zerg or be zerged, and on keep raids your primary opponents were NPCs. I had great fun for a while, but Mythic just could not balance the classes, and unfortunately I played the most gimp class in the game: a Thane. (No, that wasn't just the typical whine that every player makes about their class; players of all other classes in the game agreed that thanes were easy prey.) I still think about returning just to see how far the game's come.
5. Guild Wars: Not enough immersion to keep me playing, but I return to it on occasion. In my opinion it actually is the best game out there as far as playability and storyline. It just doesn't have enough socials and non-combat activities to keep it fresh and dynamic. The instancing is good, but gets to feel empty, even with a group. Non-instanced zones, crafting, and more socials would move this game to my top favorite, I think.
Notable mention: WoW. In all honesty, I have to say it was a lot of fun at first, for probably about two months. But the simplicity of the game wears on you because there's no challenge and no thought required. Just a quest grind (or just grind) where the game holds your hand every step of the way. The PvP concept of contested zones most attracted me to this game, but it's a failed implementation where mostly you just get ganked by higher level players. I don't care for instanced PvP, so their battlegrounds (implemented to compensate for their failed integrated PvP) don't appeal to me. Their "honor system" is a joke that really only a kill count system. I'll never return to this game or anything Blizzard produces because of the antagonistic relationship they've developed with their online community and their paranoia towards exploits that they use as an excuse to implement changes that make parts of the game miserable for honest players.
EQ2. That has kept me playing almost non stop since it came out, and I'm still having a blast. It's simply put the most fun I've ever had playing an MMO.
Schutzbar - Human Warrior - Windrunner Alliance - World of Warcraft Nihilanth - Kerra Paladin - Blackburrow - EverQuest II XBL Gamertag - Eagle15GT
I don't think I have a favorite favorite... There are a few games that I like a lot.
Final Fantasy XI - I don't know why, but this game just has a hold of me. When I played it with a bunch of friends I couldn't help but love the game.
Ragnarok Online - The grind was horrable but when I was playing a broken hunter it really didn't matter to me. I don't know why but that game was really well done for a 2 d game. Though I think quests would of made it feel less of a grind.
Siehst du mich Erkennst du mich Ganz tief in meinem Herz ist noch ein Platz f?r dich Ich suche dich Ich sehne mich nach dem was ich geliebt hab doch ich find es nicht
I'm on a break right now but I think they're up to almost 30 different skills, most with distinct purpose and incredible variety. Not to mention a quest system that actually requires you to think, solve puzzles, and utilize the many skills, instead of the typical "Go get me X goblin beards". Also includes a very expansive unlimited free trial (members area, which includes a boatload of additional content, is only $5), and a wilderness section for pkers.
it has alot of great game play, a story line and lots of weapon combinations to choose from, enchantments.. and most of all, all my friend go on it, we have a massive guild and we kick bottom!
the only down side is that i pay'd 30-quid for it when it first came out.. now its like 10-quid =(

So the order:
1 - UO
2 - EQ1
3 - SWG
Ultime Online (pre-trammel) - sandbox virtual world concept, house building, PvP risk
Eve online - sandbox virtual world concept, empire building, PvP risk, offline skill training, player run economy
You can tell the developers of Eve are ex-Ultima players.
Keep 'em Coming
