Negative. Those numbers are indeed "active" subscribers -or- players using their game card time -or- their initial 30 days of game time. Those ALL count as "active" subscribers in my book.
I think Blizzard is reporting it correctly. Get over it people.. Blizzard has made mega-millions off this game.
What people gonna do next? Say that its all a big Blizzard conspiracy and that 90% of the players are actually Blizzard controlled "bots" to try and turn half a million players into 6.5 million? Come on now.
Originally posted by Crickets Humm I cant seem to find the link to the news I saw about it. Maybe Blizzard had them take it down.
No you're just an idiot. What blizzard reports is subscribers. You're thinking of "Active players" which is two entirely different things. Blizzard has 6.5 million SUBSCRIBERS. They probably have more like 1 million, maybe 2 million, active PLAYERS. All 6.5 million are PAYING their monthly subscription but probably 1/4 to 1/3 of them are actually playing regularly. That's normal. A lot of people have subscriptions to UO or EQ1 and never log in. Personally I don't do that... if I'm playing an MMO I rarely... very rarely... maintain a subscription with another... but a lot of people do. They'll be playing WoW or whatever and still be paying subscriptions to DAOC or EQ or EQ2 or SWG or whatever. Same goes in reverse, of course.

I know so many people who are still paying their monthly, but only go on once in a while to chat with guildies and friends it isn't funny. They are all waiting for the big expansion. Personally, I turn off payments when I am not using a game even if I suspect I will be back one day.
Why is it so hard for people to believe it's as popular as it is?
I no longer play it, but all you have to do is log into pretty much any server that isn't a few months old and visit any major city to see hundreds of people running around during peak hours, and thats just one server and one city, they have more servers than any game i've ever seen (just tried a google search to find the exact number to no avail, and i can't be bothered to count all the ones here) i'm estimating it's nearly 200.
I have my reasons for not liking it also, but the fact of the matter is it's actually that popular.
Ok, this is nothing new. This applies to every MMO out there, and has been said 17.3 million times over. Why the need to make another thread about this? The game has 6+ million subscribers and about 1/3 to 1/4 active players, the same as every MMO basically.

People are fixated on having 'Bash-WoW' circle jerks. Y'all are gonna go blind from doing that too much, you know?

This has been common practice for years and I have never seen such a sorry excuse for a wow-flame.
I hate wow and I hate that so many people play a game I hate and divert subscribers from games I like *but* if youre gonna flame something - atleast have a vaguely sensible argument.

Yes there are lots of threads about this, and it's always got a couple people saying what you just did, if you want to pretend WoW isn't the most popular MMORPG to date go for it, but please show some evidence to back up these claims if you want to be taken seriously.
i'm not defending the game, just defending reality.

In response, I offer the following from the most recent update of mmogchart.com:
WORLD OF WARCRAFT (Accuracy Rating: A)
Launched on November 12, 2004, Blizzards entry into the MMOG market has been a runaway phenomenon, outpacing all expectations. As stated in Blizzards latest press release, World of Warcraft customers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or purchased a prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the installation box bundled with one free month access. Internet Game Room players that have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as customers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired pre-paid cards. Customers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules. According to this definition, as of June 2006, WoW has reached 6.6 million subscribers worldwide, including over 1 million in Europe and somewhere between 1.5 and 2 million in North America, with most of the remainder in China.
Uhhh, yeh that's it!! I myself have 1 MILLION alternate World of Warcraft accounts!! Duh. No wonder they are so successful!!
Dude, seriously, what the hell ever. Alts. OFCOURSE PEOPLE HAVE ALTERNATE CHARACTERS and MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS!! Duhhh. So do people have multiple accounts in almost EVERY damn mmorpg!
..You act like the only reason WoW is blowing every other mmo out of the water is by simply saying "Alts, dude.." No, WoW is super successful because is was brilliantly made to offer something to almost all age groups and game lovers except the hardcore -and- because it was made with top-notch quality that offers smooth, fluid gameplay mechanics. It also has the help of the highly respected names of Blizzard and Warcraft.
But nope you're right man. WoW is blowing every other mmo to shreds right now cuz of "Alts, dude.. that is all". How could I have been so stupid and overlooked "Alts". Sheesh, shame on me!

Please believe my unsubstantiated accusation, even though I can't come up with any supporting evidence whatsoever!

Uh-huh. And your evidence that Blizzard counts non-paying inactive account is...?
Blizzard is a very good gaming company, when they started they created Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft, all three were very popular hits. They have continued over the years to lead on free online gaming with Battle.net as the server provider and millions of people still login every day to play old hits such as Starcraft, Diablo II, & the old Warcraft series.
From what I have seen over the past years...., Blizzard is not stupid. They know what people want when it comes to online gaming. They finally took a lot of ideas that are fun and piled them together like water and hotdog buns. I am not a HUGE fan of WoW, I play FFXI which is the complete opposite, so don't make to believe I am a FanBoy.
WoW is a very good game and from the subscriber amount they have, they might as well hold the crown for King of Mmorpgs.
I tried the game and didn't like it. The customer base is way to immature for my tastes. But one thing I can tell you is that the game is PACKED!!!!! I have no problem believing 6 million players.
Like it or leave it, its a commercial success

Actually, they don't..
also, that links take us to a screenshot of a totally diffrent game..I don't know if you made a mistake or just joking around..

If 5 billion people logged in, it would not tell me a thing about whether or not I will enjoy the game.
