Well there's been endless threads with this same question, a recent one would be; http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/85047 Hopefully that thread will help you.

In short, you control a spaceship that you purchase with ISK (EVE Money) that you earn yourself (lots of different ways to earn ISK). But, before you buy your ship, you need the required skills to fly it -always right-click and 'show info' then check the required skills before you buy anything on EVE-. You purchase skills from the Market located in Stations, if you follow the tutorial you'll have no problem figuring this out.

When you buy your ship you'll need Modules (Guns, Armor Repairers, Afterburners, etc, etc...), again, check the required skills and train them up. Once you've got your ship and have it nicely fitted out, you can basically do what you please.

If you're a fan of PvP i'd recommend joining a Corp. that can help you out with knowledge of setting up ships, there's lots of different setup's and it can be very confusing, but as you progress in the game (with time), and understand how things work in EVE, you'll start figuring out new setup's which suits you best. Imo, EVE's strongest point is PvP, as it's basically freedom to do as you like, and kill where you like. There are however, consequences to killing people in certain areas like High Security, the Police will kill you if you kill anyone in their systems.

Also, there are skills that decrease the amount of time that's needed to train a skill, these are called Learning Skills. I highly recommend you train them up ASAP, otherwise you can go 6 months into the game and not have half the skill points that you should/could. If my connection wasn't been so damn rubbish (NTL!!), i'd find you a link on how the skill points are calculated.

The short and swift answer to what is this game is ultimate freedom within an entire universe. You can stay the swift and narrow and and simply use your combat skills on missions, ratting and the random pirate kill, or you can engage in piracy yourself. If combat is not your forte' you can be a miner, use mined minerals to produce ships and minerals, or simply run courier missions for isk.

Now, with freedom to this degree the learning curve is obviously rather high, and knowing what skills you need to pursue your career only really come from either scouring the forum, or asking players in game. But once you learn the basics, and run with it, your career can take off rather quickly.
