So I am trying to get into this game....it is really boring me out of the gate. Seems the game is sooo slow when compared to other mmorpg's I have tried. I am not one to quit a game without giving it a thorough chance. So my question would be, How long should I give this game before giving up? I am hoping that after a certain lvl or area it picks up. Please help

It takes some getting used to.
Final Fantasy XI is a game that gets better as you play...
As you progress through, the more things you can do.
If you can deal with the game being slow and more of a party organized game (because in every FF game, did you ever walk around soloing it?) you should give it more time.
Neptus - FFXI - Pandemonium
Neptus - WoW - Detheroc
If you're looking for how much time, since this is your first time playing (And depending on how much you play a day) I would guess it'll take you 10-14 days to hit lvl 30.
Because, usually when you kill a mob that gives you 100 exp.. you have to rest up and heal immediantly afterwards. If you go after the weaker mobs, you can kill about a dozen of them before you need to rest up. You get almost double the amount of exp in less time.
Yep, good advice. In fact, up to about level 4 or 5 (depending on your job), you can often level with little enough damage that you live off the level-up heals, and never rest at all, if you just stick to the level 0 mobs (Huge Hornets and Tunnel Worms (not Maneating Hornets or Stone Eaters) in Gustaberg, Bumblebees and Tiny Mandragoras (not Giant Bees or Mandragoras) in Sarutabaruta, or Wild Rabbits and Tunnel Worms (not Forest Hares or Carrion Worms) in Ronfaure). You'll find these mobs clustered just outside any of the city gates

Yup, good advice to go for the easy prey and decent challenge. Once you get a little bit of cash, buy a few stacks of Selbina Milk which will regenerate your HP without having to sit and heal, and if you're short on MP, buy some pineapple juice which does the same thing to your MP. This makes early leveling so much easier and quicker. Also, have signet cast on you by the gate guard each time you go out so you start building up Conquest Points. When you have enough CP built up, buy an Empress or Chariot Band as soon as you're able to. When activated, an Empress Band gives you 50% extra experience points for either 3 hours or up to 1000 points. These few things can make your leveling a lot more enjoyable.
