I want to know why the heck they arent designing the game so that people could play on the darkside of the lotr world.
In my opinion this is a big mistake. I mean, just imagine all the cool PVP possibilies they have in a LOTR MMO, gimme a break.
Personally i would love to be a ring wraith type character and go around pwning newb elves. but thats just me. Essentially, id be all over this game if that was the case.

LoTRO is still in testing.
As for all MMOs in development, just check in on it from time to time. Things can change. I'm hoping for a way to play evil as well. Time will tell.

From the FAQ:
I think it's the right decision. It would be extremely out of character for Orcs to posess enough bravado and intelligence to, let's say, lead a raid on the Shire. Orcs live in abject terror of Sauron...and what player is going to fill that role? All of Melkor's minions are, in effect, puppets.
my prediction
lotro = failure
but if they do pull something off..they'll have to compete with aoc, war, sto, and biowares ...
And all the other games on the market. You have a flare for stating the obvious?
I for one will support the game, and I know my girlfriend will as well.
The fact is, they are trying for a more story driven game (heaven forbid) than most, with a different purpose. If they want to be different, I will support them in every way. God knows we need it.
I really hope that turbine does a better job with lotr than they did with ddo.
Designers have a choice. They can make a game fun for the teeny-tiny, itty-bitty proportion of the audience that likes to go around "pwning" people (and though they are VERY vocal, they are a VERY tiny minority -- check stats at the Daedalus Project in various surveys to see that this is so). Or, they can make fun for the vast, enormous majority that is not into "pwnage" and "ganking." I think preventing people like you from doing just what you are saying you want to do, is the obvious right decision for most games -- at least in the West. The Asian market is very different, but then the Asian market is clearly not the target of Lord of the Rings, which is a game based on a Western intellectual property.

Literature is not really "intellectual property".

The truth of the matter is, by not letting players experience the game from both sides as they want, they are in fact losing a large amount of players who would want to play this game.

It would scare away a lot more players if they would allow it. it would go completely against the lore. besides, what use is it to split up the community?
And your proof for this claim is...what?
And i highly doubt placing in some sort of PVP would scare off any players, good PVP helps to create a valuable endgame experience as well. ex. DAoC
That's not proof. That's simpy you saying "I won't play it if I can't play evil."
Maybe many more agree with you. Perhaps you are even right. But learn to differentiate between "truth" and the expression of your opinion. Your opinion is simply that: an opinion.
At the rate DDO is going Turbine may be bankrupt before LOTRO goes live so this could all be a moot point if DDO doesn't maintain it's subscriber base.

Just a little FYI, and yes, this is completely random since I read this topic earlier but...
I was just watching Electric Playgound on G4, and it was a re-run from May.
They happened to be interviewing the CEO of Turbine who just happened to talk about a mode in game where you would play Orcs, Ring Wraiths, etc.
There will be instanced missions, similar to story lines (I guess kind of like GW, just speculation though) where you are in "Monster Mode" (yes, that's what he called it) and you will play enemy characters for that section of the game, to further the story.
He really didn't say much except for the fact that it was possible, and that they were doing more testing on the subject.
That's about it, but I hope it gets your hopes up a bit.

yes and no.
don't forget, you need to keep the IP in tact, therefore limiting the flexibility.
Although good vs evil battles would be fun, who knows. Time shall tell.
It's not too late as long as the game hasn't been released. I've seen it time and time again with other MMOs over the past 10 years. Never take anything at face value.

An online linear RPG.
I doubt LotRO will do very well for the lack of replay-ability. Making a mmorpg where the world, lore, characters etc. were in line with MIDDLE EARTH, rather than just the "lord of the rings" books would be a lot more popular, in my opinion. There are already LotR rpgs out there(offline). Most people flock to mmorpgs with the hope of creating there own story and growing stronger and walking their path with friends and strangers alike... not following some already drawn out storyLINE.
Sure.. you may point out guildwars as a plausible success story as a Linear mmorpg. But in gw you do map out a story. a story filled by PVP action. A very different story but still a story for those type of gamers.
LotRo = waste of money by Turbine. Unless they somehow drastically change their plans for lotRo, they'll be lucky to make it out of this one.
