I was just curious if the bulk of the xp in this game is collected through quests or grinding? I don't mind a grind sometimes but having quests around to help speed things along breaks the monotony. Thanks in advance
Ryzom isn't questbased at all. The missions you find is mostly for reputation or money. Most people find themselves a profession, like weaponsmith, and risk their lives finding materials to craft with.
To break monotony, participate in official events or player events, join a guild and make treks or steal an outpost from the Trykers.
Smaller than the big ones, but currently rapidly growing thanks to the new unlimited free trial. Nevrax isn't telling us how many players there are, but I can't say it feels lonely.
By the way, an advice to a new player concerning levels: Don't focus too much on maxing out your character, people have more respect for a crafter who makes good QL50 gear than one who makes medioker QL250 stuff. Levels doesn't mean evereything here.
I must say, that after playing through the trial/tutorial island I was extremely enthusiastic to reach the mainland.
After all I loved the graphics, character development, crafting, combat, community and of course the excellent quests of the starter island.
After reaching the mainland I started exploring and find out about what was going on, find new stories in which I could participate.... after a long search I decided I was obviously to dump to find any kind of quests (besides some deliver or crafting tasks).
I started asking people about the quests and stories I was obviously unable to find - after all there were many available on island I came from. Well, the answer was similar to the one that frkhot97 was giving: Ryzom isn't questbased at all
Well it's been some hours since I learned that, and I'm still extremely disappointed that the trial is promising things which are simply not there. I don't mind the single month which will be all that is ever payed from my side (account already cancelled) - but I'm really feal a bit misguided (similar to the feeling after SWG was changed to NGE, and the crafting system was destroyed in EQ2).
I know that there are many people who would go and kill a dragon, only because it is there - but I wouldn't want to hurt the poor beast if not a crying mother asked me to do so, because he had just killed her beloved daughter.
I agree that the transition from doing what the game tells you to do to do with the game what you want to do is difficult, Mirona. I started playing long before the new refugee island but came from a questbased game; WoW. So in the beginning I asked myself, why am I killing these mobs, what is the point of getting another level? I stopped playing the game after the trial (it was 14 day trial those days, but found the box in a store and gave it another shot).
When I eventually looked out over a valley in Fleeting Garden with carnivores hunting down the herbivores, and the social herbies defending themselves, I realised what the game was about. I felt the world come alive in a way I never experienced before and that there is alot to learn from observing and interacting with it.
But Mirona, there are quests to do: Encyclopedias. Even if only a few is activated. Check out http://www.ballisticmystix.com/encyclopedia.jsp (try the ones with all circles filled, and if you don't find the NPC -there is even a NPC finder)
"SoR is NOT QUEST BASE THE NPE IS MISSLEADING THERE ARE NO worthwhile quests ON THE MAINLAND" and ask one of the mmorpg staff to sticky it
Or they should make that disclaimer in bold statements in the SoR home page :P
It has been said over and over again from the vets players all over this forum and the SoR forum, but players who just want to jump into the game and don't really research around would feel fairly cheated indeed.
Well, I'm a new player to Saga of Ryzom, and I must say that the newbie area is just a tutorial, it does not provide you with a real 'feel' of the game, which turned to be just fantastic, at least for me.
To be honest quests based games are very restricting, you need to go to one place at this level, and this on the other, I remeber just exploring the lakelands for a whole day and noting down spots that provide the best mats for my ammo, or doing some task for a hunter that provided me some nice coin, and even when grinding its a lot more complex than most games, luring away creatues from their packs, whaching out for predators (there are mobs in this game that move a lot around the area and have a rather nasty agro range), and adjusting my fighting stanzas and equip to every nemy type.
I might have gotten a bit oftopic, but I just would like to point out that "the grind" int his game is far more enjoyable than ina other MMORPG I played before.
Not to mention that after we will get Ryzom ring you will have all quests and instances you want, hey, you can get an introducing quest for every guild if you want, not to mention all the options available to the roleplayers

Ryzom is an awesome game but once the Ring is delivered, Nevrax should really focus on :
- Adding hundreds of lore rites / encyclopedia quests
- Adding new skilltrees
I strongly believe that's the way to go if Nevrax wants to keep all the new players The ruins of Silan attracted.
