In my opinion, Star Wars is cool because of the several different things that are happening at any given time, and the vastness of the realm. No other story has had this many different authors and game designers creating books and games about it. It covers anything you want. Busy cities full of cutthroats and beggars, vast deserts and prairies for those looking to start their own communities.
I don't care what everyone else wants. I'm selfish and want what -I- want, and I want a new updated massively multiplayer version of X-Wing versus Tie Fighter I don't want experience points, I don't want skill points, I don't want leveling up, I don't want loot systems, I don't want crafting. I want massively multiplayer space combat in that great, completely unrealistic world war 2 style that Star Wars is famous for. I want Admiral Ackbar yelling "it's a trap" and oh crap the death star is fully operational and here come the tie fighters. I could not care less about dancers leveling up their dancing skill and crafters making new bikinis for people.
If you loved pre CU Star Wars Galaxies, than I feel for you. The way they pulled the rug out from under everyone playing that game was unconcienable and it sucks big time to lose a game you loved and all the work you put into your characters like that. However, Star Wars Galaxies has absolutely nothing to do with what -I- want in a Star Wars MMO and for me, even the original pre-CU version was a colossal disappointment.

So yeah, I for one call for a Star Wars MMO.
If there will be no pre-CU SWG, as I suspect there won't ever be, I would like to see another Star Wars mmorpg, but not one designed for "the masses". That will create more turmoil between all of the different types of players who want to see the features they like in the game, whether or not it may belong in Star Wars.
I would like to see a very accurate depiction of the Star Wars universe in a mmorpg. If it will include Jedi Knights, I would expect it to take place in the times of the Old Republic. I would expect to see lots of space exploration and a vast, expansive gameworld with many different types of creatures and playble races/classes.
I would definitely expect to see a PvP layout where different factions battle it out for something meaning full in the game, not just because it's "good" vs. "evil" or something like that.
I would like to see it include lots of opportunity for roleplayers, making it a mmorpg lets the players make contributions to an ever changing gameworld.
I thought the original did some of this well, and it failed at some important things, but there will never be a Star Wars mmorpg that appeals to the masses, because Star Wars means something different all kinds of fans, not to mention the way they prefer to play mmorpgs.
I would also still be playing SWG if the NGE hadn't happened.

A massive fanbase is exactly the reason why I posted what I did. Within the huge Star Wars fanbase, there are players who have many different preferences when it comes to mmorpgs. World of Warcraft is a mmo that appeals to the masses. It is easy to play, has a little bit of everything for just about everyone, and it keeps with the original Warcraft theme. But do players all praise the game lately?
Now imagine doubling or tripling the WoW fanbase, an approximate I am making for the Star Wars fanbase. How do you create a mmorpg for them all? Some will want Star Wars to remain highly accurate according to the movies and lore, others will want more freedoms in order to make the game more accessible or more fun according to how they want to play (maybe they really want to play a Jedi, even though the game is set in the Galactic Civil War period. Not accurate, but it allows for players to experience what they want).
A player like me would not enjoy this at all, it would ruin the immersion for me, because lots of Jedi running around in a Galactic Civil War period is not the Star Wars I know and love.
This is just once basic example of why making a mmorpg based on Star Wars would be so difficult to please the masses. The original SWG didn't, the NGE doesn't, and any new mmorpg based on Star Wars won't. So what I would like to see is a Star Wars mmorpg that is more focused, aimed at narrower range of fans.
Perhaps several Star Wars mmorpgs wouldn't be a bad idea. Have one based in the Old Republic where players can be Jedi and have game features that appeal to the more FPS/Action oriented. Then maybe have a slower paced, more organized faction-based mmorpg based in the Galactic Civil War that focuses more on team play and character development.
Perhaps they could, instead of focusing on a narrow range of fans, focus on one movie or book in particular. That way what happens in that realm is what is reflected in the game. Your example of Jedi in the Galactic Civil War obviously applies.
If they said they were focusing the core game on a book or movie, but were taking player considerations on gameplay feel and look... I think it could work out.
I personally would think a NJO mmo would be awesome . I mean don't exactly have to follow the books or anything. If they get a good developing team and writers, they should create a good storyline along with a cool world.
-- Playing during the NJO would fix the jedi problem to some extent. You ask why?
the yuzhon vong. They were immune to force abilities and Jedi had very little powers against them.
-- In a Star Wars NJO mmo, there could be the Jedi Academy where young aspiring jedis like yourselves could train for so long to level ? (doesnt have to be level based at all).
Theres so much they could do with a NJO mmo its not funny . A lot of the Massive Star Wars Fan Base would check it out, and if the right company made one like this, it could be fun.
That is a good idea. It would take Star Wars into a whole new era, with lots of original things that can be created instead of things from the past that we may all love, but may limit gameplay freedoms or may not be used in the same context as the movies, making some of us perturbed. It would take the basis of a great license and expand it further, beyond what we already know, possiblly allowing players to get involve in shaping the future of Star Wars? But would Lucas go for it?
I would play a New Jedi Order version of a Star Wars mmorpg for sure.

Your right that some people would shy away from the part of Star Wars they dont know.
But for hardcore mmo starwars fans , it would be a big opportunity.
Shaping the galaxy, Destroying the Yuzhon Vong or joining them.
It'd be stupid of them to make another one. SWG had low ratings to start with, showing them (true or not) that not too many people want to play a Star Wars MMORPG. They had a deep, complex game, and it didn't bring in WoW-like numbers. Then they made it resemble EQ and they lost subs. Then they made it into a "fast paced" FPS MMO. It did even worse.
LA's not going to settle for a few hundred thousand. "Hey guys, just make something that'll entertain them. It doesn't have to make too much money, just something that'll make them happy". They'd be stupid to risk all that time and money to build a new SW MMO when it looks like there's no market for it. Especially since it would have to compete with another one. That splits a very small market into even smaller pieces. And at least Galaxies had the movies to help boost sales.
*swaggers into thread with his 'missinformation crushing stick'*
You are incorrect when you say SWG (now currently known as CSWG aka Classic SWG) "had low ratings to begin with".
1. SWG when it came out was THE fastest growing MMORPG in history. A record first created by EQ. Then re-set by DAoC. Then of course set by SWG. At current time held by WoW. (Only STO has a chance of re-setting it heheh.)
2. SWG shortly after its 6th MONTH peaked at 330k accounts, on track to having over 500k accounts in 1 year, and would at current time in 2006 easily have 2 million accounts.
3. There were no player Jedi in SWG, and SWG was doing just fine. It was doing beyond blockbuster! LucasArts then went around SOE and pushed for Jedi in SWG, for NO REASON.
The game was doing phenominal, leave it alone. Instead it got messed with, then messed up! The SWG game moderators and DEVs even posted on the SWG forums what players thought about what LucasArts was doing, and asked if it seemed like false advertising.
SWG's phenominal growth immediatly STOPPED, and went downhill. At present time SWG has roughly 100k accounts, losing over 2/3 aka 66% of its total accounts. CSWG now no longer exists. Who is to blame? First LucasArts for being too out of touch. Second SOE for being too much of a yessman, and not standing up to LucasArts and saying "The game is doing phenominal! Leave it alone!".
330k accounts is not "low ratings". Long live the memory of CSWG!
SWG had a horrible launch (like most 2nd gen MMOs).
You are incorrect.
1. The first day SWG launched it was unplayable. Because they did not have enough servers to handle the overload of record number of players trying to login at the same time.
2. The second day of launch, and onwards, SWG was playable. The game was soo popular that ALL servers were continously filled to max capacity the first 4 months SWG was out.
Since yes SWG was playable from 2nd day fo launch and onwards, it did NOT have a "horrible launch". Players were able to login, play, and ENJOY the game. Were there bugs? Yes. But nothing about the game was broken enough, wrong enough, to keep players from playing, to keep players from having fun.
3. There is a long running/short running debate on what defines a generation. Please tell me, if you see SWG as 2nd generation, then what do you see as first generation? THEN what generation do you see The Realm Online, and Meridian 59?
SOE had planned to have NO jedi.
Here you are 100% correct. SWG not only planned to have no Jedi, they on purpose HAD no Jedi. There were 3 reasons:
A. Jedi are too Uber. And would throw off the game.
B. The time period was between ANH and ESB. It would look too silly, be too cannon breaking, to see 1,000 or more Jedi running around in the open everywhere, when the Empire is suppose to have forced them into hiding, and have killed almost all of them.
Who would fight the Jedi? The Sith? There are almost no Sith. So the Jedi would be unchecked. SOE had the idea of having "Dark Jedi" balance against the Jedi. It was still in planning.
C. Raph Koster, SOE, and the rest of the former UO game DEVs, successfully sold the idea of players making their OWN adventures. Instead of simply re-doing what Luke, Han, Leia, and Lzndo did, players would be able to do their own deeds and adventures. Complimenting this very unuque idea was SWG (now CSWG) having an incredible 30+ professions! And each character being able to learn 3 1/2 at the same time. AND each server allowing 1 character per player/account. The idea was, SWG did not NEED Jedi.... there were 30+ OTHER professions to check out! And the fact SWG had incredible blockbuster success PROVED this was true!
They were planning on only using one planet for the whole game then people raised so much hell on the forums that they made tons of last minute changes to the core game. It was released before it was finished.
Here you are completly incorrect.
From the getgo SWG NEVER was going to have just 1 planet LOL! The game DEVs even posted on why certain planets were chosen, and others were not. (Part of their formula was that the parts, tools, they used to make every planet had to be able to be re-used to make other planets. Hoth for example did not fit this part of the formula because there was no chance for any beaches, trees, flora, etc.. to be re-used from making other planets.)
Was SWG released before it was finnished? The bigger question, was/is... was the released version PLAYABLE? The answer is YES. Raph Koster posted a very famous post, in which he talked about "when is a mmorpg ready for release?". He said technically never, since there are too many tweaks, and features a game DEV continously wants to make before release. Thus, it really comes down to.. when is a mmorpg playable? And does it have the majority of the features in it that it is advertised as having? (Unlike AC2 which never put in NPCs destroying cities, and players having to defend cities. Though it continued to advertise having it.)
So technically, no mmorpg can be released 100% finnished. All mmorpgs in history have been released "unfinnished". SWG was indeed playable at release.
It had tons of people playing at first, but many quit in the first couple of months because of the bugs. Those who stayed with it loved it. It wasn't just diehard Star Wars fans. It was a good skill based Sc-Fi MMO.
Hold on, hold on, didn't you say and claim SWG "had a horrible launch" ? Now you are saying SWG "had tons of people playing at first"?
The first "couple of months" SWG was out every server was filled to maximum. A mass exit of players did not start until after LucasArts went around SOE and pushed for SWG to be another Jedi Outcast game, another Jedi Powerbattles game. This happened right before the 1 year mark.
Ahh, well this is a intresting post... I myself would love a new one... AS LONG AS SOE is not involved at all, these retards fucked up SWG so bad that now it is geared for 14 year olds and angry old players that could not get Jedi the hard way.
If they made a game feel more like pre-CU -- (early) days of SWG and made it more like a SIM game again then it would be great, the crafting system then was bar none the best ever in a game, the Jedi system was hard with risks vs reward.. a goal in mind and more rare because it was not free and had purpose, the point system for leveling was great because of the choices you could make...
So many things that made the first version of SWG great taken away in the name of progress is sad.
BIOWARE could do it, and not all Jedi either, I want to earn one again, I want it to be HARD and I want to have risks.. this thought of just making it easy to go running around with a force pole arm in a Jedi robe is a joke to any Star Wars fan but I'm guessing not a 12 year old kid that wants to cut people up with a saber...who knows.
______________________________ I usually picture the Career builder commercial with the room full of monkeys and upside down sales chart when thinking about the SOE/SWG decision making process..... SOE's John Blakely and Todd Fiala issued a warning: "Don't make our mistakes." Ref NGE Winner of the worst MMOS goes to.... the NGE and SWG..!!! http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm?loadFeature=1034&bhcp=1

Or how about an Old Republic game with NO FPS involved. I may want to be a Jedi, but that doesn't mean I am a FPS playing kiddie. I like the slow pace of Pre-NGE SW, but I like the lore and everything else of the Jedi. I would prefer Jedi being something worth getting though, not what it has become in the NGE.
NJO Is a brilliant Idea! There is so much potential in that. Jedi's could go to Yavin 4 and train with Luke, Tatooine would still be...welll....Tatooine. The Empire is making their last stand, the republic could be reforming. What a breath of fresh air!
I say we make a difference. Why not scribe a few things ourselves or maybe get a petition signed and send it to Mr.Lucas? Either way, could be fun. I like to be more hands on and a little less fanboi.

Yep, thats what i had in mind. I mean like you said, so much potentional. Something fresh... They continue the lore of Luke, and co. I mean swg timeline is right in the middle of everything in OT, cant really change history.
NJO, dont have to worry about being too many jedi, becuz they're rebuilding.
The Yuzhon Vong are the new bad guys in the universe.
If a new Star Wars MMORPG (lets just call it SWO for kicks and giggles) were to come out I would want it to do the following:
1) Start out much like SWG did, with a solid ground game that is skill based. But have you able to progress, through character growth, till you could eventually afford (no not be given... AFFORD) to buy your own ship and/or join a military branch and be assigned to a ship/ships.
2) Within the game there should be a dynamic factioning system that would keep track of your actions and interactions within the game assigning 'light side' and 'dark side' points (invisibly!!!) to your character. IE: You will never know whether you are light or dark side as you grow in the game. You might have an idea because you're generally a nice person or generally a jacktard... but you wouldn't really "know".
3) After you accumulate a certain ammount of either light or darkside points you would begin to have a chance for your character to just randomly become 'force sensitive'. Depending on how many you accrue that chance would be greater or less. Not through gaining XP, just by playing the game. What you kill, etc, would have very little impact or influence.
4) Once 'force sensitive' you would have to either learn on your own how to become a jedi or become an apprentice to another jedi. Jedi could only advance beyond a "jedi knight' type rank by teaching other force sensitives. This path should be VERY long... It should require months, if not over a year, of play to become a full Jedi Knight... and months (if not years) longer to manage to advance to Jedi Master and eventually to Councelor.
5) The game should have both ground and space elements to it. Much like SWG did after JTL but they should be far more tied together. Smugglers should have to actually smuggle goods. Players actions when interacting with various factions should be able to trigger bounties upon their heads which would cause a bounty hunter to come after them. Thus not only giving bounty hunters a purpose but also giving dire consequences for PO'ing the wrong factions.
6) Galactic Combat should NOT be optional as in "you can turn it off at will". It should be forced based upon your actions. IE: If you go into orbit in an X-Wing you are fair game to any imp pilot, etc. If you choose to join the empire then the rebellion should be able to shoot you. (insert appropriate faction/equipment based upon timeline)
7) There must be a detailed story-driven quest system in the game. Not just mission terminals but more like the quest content added with the NGE (the one GOOD thing about that debacle) but take that even further. Detailed quests that give you multiple ways/branches to completion based upon your actions. HOW you choose to complete the quests would have more influence on your light/dark side status than whether you complete it or not. IE: Does rescuing the fair maiden involve massacring everone to get her out or did you use diplomatic methods? Did you help the poor beggar cross the street or did you just kill him for annoying you? (Simplistic examples but you could get as complex or simple as you wished. Some decisions should not be clear as to whether it would be a 'dark' or 'light' decision). Much like the interactions in KOTOR and KOTORII.
SWG started out heading in this direction then got side-tracked early on. If they'd stuck with this direction it would have been ten times as successful as it wound up being.

Agreed, But, not everyone wants to be jedis, or force sensitive at all. Everyone knows if there good or evil. -- Maybe not just Jedi or Sith driven, but it can be faction driven. If your actions show that your evil, and no good, then maybe a certain guild or in game npc factin will approach you.

i dont know, just more ideals
Absolutely true. Remember that just being force sensitive does not a jedi make. All it does is unlock the possibility of becoming one. Whether you choose to train it or not is up to you. I do like the idea of factions approaching you based upon your reputation
Again, though: I don't think players should be made aware of how evil or good they are. I don't think that Anakin really thought he was being "evil" initially. He was just making the best decisions (in his opinion) that he could, given his situation. In hindsight yes they were the wrong decisions. But how was he really to know at the time? As Ben Kenobi said: "It all depends on your point of view".
I really like the idea of a hidden 'evil/good' meter. That you aren't aware of until AFTER you are approached by a faction or choose to try to start training your force sensitivity. Until then you should have no idea whether you are leaning good or evil. Just like real life.
God I'd love to be in a position to manage an MMORPG project. It's something I was very good at (muds) in college... and really enjoyed. Unfortunately my path in life didn't take me towards the game industry.

This idea i like alot.

Theres lots of things you can do with this.
Like if your a bounty hunter , and ur somewhat of a good bh, then u'll have certain influence on other chars, and ur missions, ect
Let's not all get too excited here. I'm positive it's going to be a Sci-Fi MMORPG, it's bioware, come on. But, a SWG:2 or whatever you might call it is taking a big chance for them. It seems like it would be one of those make or break deals for Bioware, either the community will accept it and love it, or the first SWG reputation will actually hurt it.
And i really wouldn't worry about the in depth quest, immersive fighting, good storylines, etc. Remembers it's Bio-ware. If you've played KOTOR you know what i mean, KOTOR1 i swear i about shit myself when I found out who i really was. There will be a good story, you're guranteed that.
Bioware is completly capable of creating an MMO with WoW like numbers. Look at it this way too, who do you think has a larger fan bass the Warcraft Genre or the Starwars Genre, it's obvious that if a SWG:2 was to be created to perfection it would stomp the WoW crowd. And with the huge boost Bioware is going to get from their upcomming RPG Mass Effect (Which Looks amazing) i'd say they could pull it off.
But, we really don't know what they have up their sleeves. We just have to wait unfortunantly

Well, I don't know about the whole "Have to be good or evil to become a Jedi" thing. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want to be a Jedi. It's just that... Hey, your right, I'm not ruling out the neutral part of the meter/faction thing we've been talking about. But i'm glad you brought it up. You'll be more of a Force Adept then a jedi or sith. IF your neutral with your ingame decisions and the way you treat others, then certain Neutral guild/factions might approach you ingame, you might no it or not.
edit:
they should use a lot of the classes from Star Wars d20. so people will have a lot of the options in the star wars universe:)

A couple of new Star Wars Online ideas:
Time Eras:
1. NJO
2. Kotor
3. OT (SWG)
4. PT (prequel trilogy)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Theres so much they could do with a NJO mmo its not funny . A lot of the Massive Star Wars Fan Base would check it out, and if the right company made one like this, it could be fun.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another thing: NJO is in the future a bit in starwars lore, so there'd be new planets, new technologies, new ships, ect, new factions.
Jabbas Factions would be gone. The Empire would be withering away.
A new Star Wars Mmo has so much potential where soe wronged there fans.
-- Id play a NJO mmo too.
who knowz if one would ever be made
*swaggers into thread with his 'missinformation crushing stick'*
-_-
Ahh, well this is a intresting post...

I usually picture the Career builder commercial with the room full of monkeys and upside down sales chart when thinking about the SOE/SWG decision making process.....
SOE's John Blakely and Todd Fiala issued a warning: "Don't make our mistakes." Ref NGE
Winner of the worst MMOS goes to.... the NGE and SWG..!!! http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm?loadFeature=1034&bhcp=1

-----------
Theres lots of things you can do with this.
Where am i and who am i?
Your right, Don't know what bioware has up there sleeves.
But were still Calling for a New STar Wars mmo
Hey, your right, I'm not ruling out the neutral part of the meter/faction thing we've been talking about. But i'm glad you brought it up. You'll be more of a Force Adept then a jedi or sith. IF your neutral with your ingame decisions and the way you treat others, then certain Neutral guild/factions might approach you ingame, you might no it or not.
edit:
they should use a lot of the classes from Star Wars d20. so people will have a lot of the options in the star wars universe:)
