Does this class exist

I am going to buy FFXI soon and was wondering if there is a class that wears heavy armor and uses either 2 weapons or a big 2 handed weapon?

Ninja's get dual weild at level 10.. so a level 10 Ninja or any job level 20 while subbing Ninja can use two light weapons (one in each hand).

Warrior, Dark Knight, and Samurai all use large two-handed weapons also. (Usually Great Sword/Scythe for Warrior/Dark and a Great Katana for Sam's).

I'll go through the Jobs and List the Basics of what each uses. Btw, If you sub Ninja you can duel wield weapons.

Warrior - Axe, 2x Axe (if Subbing Ninja), & Great Axe. (Warriors can use about every weapon in the game, but those listed are the best for them and will produce the best damage)

    Monk - Hand-to-Hand

White Mage - Club, Staff (Only 51+)

    Black Mage - Staff

    Red Mage - Sword

    Thief - Dagger

Paladin - Sword, Great Sword (not very often) Staff (Only 51+)

Dark Knight - Great Sword, Scythe, Great Axe (This isn't untill endgame)

    Beastmaster - Axe, Scythe

    Bard - Dagger

Ranger - Dagger (For hand), Bow, Crossbow, or Gun (For Archery/Marksmen)

    Samurai - Great Katana

    Ninja - Dual Katana's

Dragoon - Spear, Staff (Situational, but rarely used)

    Summoner - Staff

    Blue Mage - Sword

Corsair - Guns ( For Marksmen)

    Puppetmaster - Hand-to-Hand

As for heavy armor, Just about all Melee jobs can wear the same Armor (Except for Artifact Armor thats Job specific).

And to add in, the way you made it sound like you plan to Solo? FFXI is HEAVLY party dependant, Soloing very far with most jobs is Moot. I say that because after 15 it starts going downhill, and after 20 its like Climbing a moutain, You can still do it its just going to be very slow.

Yeah, up above what he said about Ninja.
Basically, you can sub Ninja with any class, and dual wield.
    I am Thf/Nin, it's very nice...

    Neptus - FFXI - Pandemonium
    Neptus - WoW - Detheroc

Ooooh, you want to be a Warrior, yes you do!

You get access to most of the best armor (although you commonly wear armor that's less thick and gives you more attack bonuses; while Warrior can tank, generally they do damage dealing duty). You can carry a big honkin' two-handed axe, or if you use Ninja as your subjob (and that's very common) you can have at it with two one-handed axes.

Ok switching topic a little, which class combo do you think would have the highest melee dps. Warrior/Ninja or something similar?

Oh and what do you get for subclassing as a warrior, and one more question. Are red mages good?

EDIT: I forgot to ask, if warrior is primarily a DPS class, which class is the main-tanker? Paladin? ><

The highest damage dealers are the following:

    RNG/NIN
    DRK/WAR
SAM/WAR or THF/NIN (just gonna list them together for controversial reasons)

However, any WAR/DRK, WAR/NIN, WAR/THF, etc. will do pretty good damage.

Oh and what do you get for subclassing as a warrior, If war is your sub you get abilitys like provoke (wich pulls hate toward you if things go bad), you get berserk, wich raises attack and lowers defense, and you get passive things like attack boost)
and one more question. Are red mages good?  Red Mages don't melee after say level 30. They get a spell called refresh in their 30's, which regens other members MP, and that becomes your whole job pretty much. They can be main healers.

EDIT: I forgot to ask, if warrior is primarily a DPS class, which class is the main-tanker? Paladin? ><  Paladin or Ninja

    Hope I answered everything

lol do you even play this game?  rng/nin is pretty gimp now thanks to the rng nerf, drk/war does ok damage but at the cost of dying every 15 minutes, sam/war is nothing compared to sam/thf, and thf/nin (as much as i like the job) cant keep up with high-end dps jobs.

to correct you, war is the highest dps job if geared properly while mnk is a close second (can outdo wars depending on gear)

RNG/NIN is only gimp to someone who doesn't know how to use the job. In the proper hands, it is still the highest damage dealer in the game. DRK/WAR (and even DRK/THF) do excellent damage without the need of building up TP or any special menuevers (like SATA).

I've seen a MNK/DRK do some pretty heavy damage, but other than that I've never seen a MNK do any real damage. The best thing about MNK is it's hit consistancy. That may compute to more damage over time, but you'd be hard pressed to prove that.

SAM/THF doesn't do any good damage untill the higher levels and even then only with a Weapon Skill / SA attack.

Dont even try to convince yourself otherwise.

Party with one sometime, he'll outdamage you to your mothers house and back. MNK has been proven an incredible DD endgame time and time again.

SAM/THF doesn't do any good damage untill the higher levels and even then only with a Weapon Skill / SA attack.

The keyword in your paragraph is endgame and only then in particular situtations. There good against most undead skeletons at any point in the game, but most EXP mobs you run into have an advantage over MNK's hand-to-hand attacks. MNKs are capable of doing some nice damage against several HNM's, but throughout the levels it's damage varies to much to call it a massive damage dealer. The only real time it can get that honor is the end game.

If someone knows the correct distance from a mob and is capable of moving into said distance and adjusting to the mobs movements correctly, a RNG is still the highest damage dealer in the game. Not my fault that alot of people who decide to level the job don't even bother figuring it out, thus causing some fairly pitiful hits. Square hasn't changed the damage of ranged weapons any and they are still the most powerful weapons in the game. It just takes more skill to use them correctly and get the full damage potential out of them.

and by the look of things I'm playing the same game you are, just a hell of alot more.

Seeing as I just recently started using xfire, I have 150 days logged in to my main character. Not to mention 25 on an alt. Now listen, here's a lesson for you:  Rangers aren't anything like what they used to be. Gimp class now, I've seen just about every other DD outdamage rangers all the time. And monks are only good against skeles huh?  That's why I crank out 1000+ Asuran fists just about every time i weaponskill on an Imp or a Puk right?

In every party I've been in on monk since probably level 55 I've been the best dd, until about 70 when war/nin started getting a little better. Know what you're talking about before you go and tell me what monk can do and can't do.
  • If you cross-class with monks, like WAR/MNK, you'll still have to go hand-to-hand combat, right? Doesn't axes or bows do more damage? (I don't play the game yet, just tryin to learn something here )

As a WAR/MNK you can use hand to hand, but it wont be as effective as when you use it as monk.

Warriors have a lower rating in it.

Monks have an A+ i think, while warriors have like a C

That means a monk level 10 will have a certain amount of hand to hand skill as the cap, and a warrior the same level will have a lower cap, therefore they do less damage and miss more.

Not to mention monks get an ability that speeds up your hand to hand attacks, something warriors dont get.
  • So maybe warriors do more damage with an axe than monks with hand-to-hand but they hit a lot more. is that it?

  • RinicRinic Member Posts: 715
Yes, axes do more damage a hit, but monks attack faster.
