The MMORPG.com review of DnL, kinda

I think this recent MMORPG.com article comes as close to the MMORPG.com DnL review as we will get:

While that article wasn't directed directly at any particular game, but there were several that influenced my peice. I like to play underdog titles by small companies which is why I really dislike when someone uses it as an excuse for dropping the ball.

By the way, there is a review of Dark and Light currently in the works.

I can't wait for that review.  I really want to see how the 3 people still playing D&L will try to spin it.

Perhaps it is time for the first performance art/game review hybrid.

FADE IN. In the background we hear Samuel Barber's ADAGIO FOR STRINGS.

A series of images flash in rapid succession on the screen...the Treaty of Verdun, Napoleon, the Battle of Marne, scenes of French Resistance Fighters in WWII.

    SCREEN GOES BROWN.

    CAMERA PANS BACK.

We see that the brown filling the screen is a paper bag with the words 'Dark and Light' crudely stenciled on it. An evil, sloppy MIME is holding the bag. From the brown discoloration seeping from the bottom of the bag we realize the bag's contents are odious.

The MIME faux-sneaks to a house. On the mailbox we see the address 'GAMER'. The MIME lights the bag on fire, places it on the doorstep, then rings the doorbell and exits.

GAMER comes out, looks around, then notices the flaming bag of poo on his doorstep. He steps on it to put it out.

CLOSE UP on GAMER's face. He looks down at his foot, back at the camera. He is obviously disgusted.

    FINI

That's about it. Maybe throw in some CGI dragons or something for the kiddie appeal.

    ...Pika

Aye, and kudos to the writer for saying what we have all along. Deceit and Lie just doesnt cut it. This board here also gave kudos to the makers of Seed for their honesty in their game. Polar opposite to DNL. Dan explained and summed it up pretty darn well.

Do you think the creators of Deciet and Lie will listen to some sense now? Nahhhhhhhh....nvm I wont ask that.

Oops didnt see your post here Dan. Kudos to the article!  Explained and summed up quickly, sensibly and sadly, all too true for some recent companies. Hiding behind the excuse is extremely unforgivable if not downright annoying. A kudos was given here at this board to Seed and its producers. A copy of one of their dev statements was posted and it was asked if the devs at DNL might take a lesson from it. It appears they chose to ignore it.

The reputations of those small companies that prove to only deceive and flat out lie to their customers are a given failure. What they do to the mmorpg community on the whole is even worse. Respecting those that will purchase your product can only help to improve the relationship between the Dev and the gamer themselves. Better marketing for your game cant be found. I honestly do not believe that the devs at DNL could care less about their own community let alone the mmorpg community as a whole.

Again, kudos Dan for the article.    (Want some popcorn? LOL)

Perhaps you did not see my post, but acording to my calculations (99.9% inacurate calculations) there are 48 entities playing D&L (most of them arent people but thats technicalities).

I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

Aye good article. I suspect that is pretty much how the mmorpg.com review will go.

The spanish one was good too. No shiny's for this game. Call it what it is and be done. Everyone and everything involved in this game, with the exception of the VWORLD TERRAIN by _Pix_ (which was affected in the complete opposite way much to the chagrin of the NP3/Farceland gang), are all stained simply by the shoddy game as well as the deceptive business practices.

Heh, being known for years now as the worst game ever, eclipsing Mourning, is surely the place they deserve. Arrogance, ignorance, deception, inneptness, incompetence, inexperience, disrepect ---> all are the epitome of this game. Now being used as a base for other games to compare it to ('as bad as DNL", "as deceptive as Farlan", etc etc) will be the legacy they will leave behind.

Will other small companies get the picture? That is yet to be seen. Its unfathomable that another small company could come in and do as much damage to the community as they have.

Unfortunately, this has also allowed some less than scrupulous companies and designers to push out a poorly designed, poorly tested pile of code disguised as a game. They delay their customer complaints with lists of upcoming features and extreme time sinks designed to keep players occupied until the next patch. It seems that too many small teams are lured in by the prospect of a large monthly paycheck and get in over their head trying to produce a game beyond their price and skill range.

    ...

On the other hand you have others who, either through lack of communication or blatant lies, mislead their fans as to the state of the game. They release a completely unfinished and untested product that has virtually none of the expected features. Thankfully these companies are few and far between because they not only damage their own reputation and encourage more dishonest behavior, but also make future customers of MMOs less likely to take a chance on small projects for fear of being burned again.

This is taken directly from that article. All I can say is

Oh please, you know exactly how they will spin this.  We will have posts on top of posts about how we were so negative towards the game without giving it a chance, and our posts unfairly influenced the reviewer.  We would flame anyone that posted anything positive about the game, so that means the reviewer only saw the negative, blah, blah, blah.  Anyone want to bet a dollar they will be reading a post like this soon?

You got it. Then they will throw in how they were screwed over by the other dev team members leaving so its not their fault, yadda yadda.

Lawd, will the slime ever be wiped off? This s*** runs out of their pores.
