Originally posted by Elnator I never had much respect for Turbine. AC1 was 3rd out of 3 MMO's when it came out. As soon as DAOC came out it became 4th out of 5 (AO being the only one worse). Never sure why folks liked Turbine so much. The game (AC1) was a decent enough game but Turbine mis-managed it from day 1. They've NEVER marketted it well and some of their design decisions absolutely perplexed the players. AC2 was even worseDDO is a bomb, though it may survive just on name recognition from the looks of thingsAnd god only knows how LOTRO is going to turn out. I mean... if you can screw up DDO .....Anyhow... I don't have a whole lot of respect for Turbine.... AC1 is their only claim to fame and, lets face it, it's a decent game... but certainly not all that impressive when compared to it's competition. It never even caught UO, let alone EQ and DAOC.
I agree with you on most of what you say Elnator... especially the fact that Turbine should advertise, market and have free trials available for Asheron's Call and to not do so is beyond idiocity on their part.
But you continue to rank AC only by the population numbers it has recieved over the years. Come on man, you are a very smart guy. You know damn well that a games popularity has absolutely NOTHING to do with how good of a game it actually is. In this instance, Asheron's Call was 3 out of 3 back in the EQ/UO/AC days... But why? Exactly as you say is a BIG part of that. The fact that they didn't offer free trials and nearly as much advertising as did EQ and UO. Compare how many people tried EQ ro how many people that ever tried AC. The numbers for the people who tried EQ would probably blow away the number of people that tried AC. In fact, I have nothing to back this up, but I'd be willing to bet that if you could look at the percentages... I bet a lot higher percentage of the people that tried AC stayed with AC as opposed to the percentage of people who tried EQ and stayed with EQ. Again, this reflects back to a lack of advertising, free trials, and marketing.
I'm not flaming you Elantor, or even attacking you. I agree 100% with most of what you say. But you seem to be taking away from Asheron's Call "quality of the game" score because of it's lack of population numbers compared to other mmos. Seriously man, if AC has 20,000 subs and WoW has 7 million subs... does that really mean that WoW is a 350 times better game then is AC simply because 7 million is 350 times as many players as AC's 20,000?
If that's the case, I would disgree. In fact, I would argue that AC is a much better game then is WoW. And let me give you an unbiased, more logical reason to that statement....
AC > WoW. A more logical reason to explain why I say this then to simply say which ever one has a higher population is the best follows:
Look at this forums game ratings now. AC1 is getting an 8.1 score. WoW is also getting an 8.1. AC1 is much older and because of this, is lacking way behind WoW in the graphics scores. As it should. But despite this, AC is still averaging the same overall score mainly due to the scores that matter in categories like FUN, VALUE, ROLEPLAYING, and even customer service. So depite AC being 5 years older then WoW and despite it having considerably lower resolution and appetizing graphics, AC still is averaging the same overall score. That says a LOT more then simply pointing at popularity numbers to say which is the best. Sure, you can say only fanboys are giving AC such high score. But on the same token, are you gonna tell me that WoW doesn't have just as many..if not more... fanboys rating WoW with infalted numbers? Each game has its own high rankers and haters.. and in fact mmorpg throws out the extreme high and low ratings.
AC is atleast as good, if not a better game then WoW. Despite the graphics and age differences. Believe it or don't. Point at the numbers all you want. I still say that average overall player ratings for each game is a much better indication. WoW has the advatnage due to it being 5 years newer. And AC matches it's score. That, to me, says much more then how many people play.

Dissagree Zaxx... AC1 had a brief spike of players then everyone bailed on it to go back to EQ. By the time AC1 released a LOT of us were looking for a new game to move to. We were sick of SOE's constant buggy patches (yes, even back then folks) and we were tired of the constant nerfing and those of us unfortunate enough to love our Bards were absolutly SICK of every spell change to 'fix' another class absolutely devastating the bard class. Rangers were sick of catching 10x the aggro of a tank because aggro was mis-calculated (they finally fixed that 2 years later) etc.
Enter AC1: EVERYONE I know tried it out. Myself and my entire guild got the game and played. And, guess what, within 3 months we were back in EQ. Because AC1 wasn't all that great. If I had to pick 1 major problem that AC1 had at release it would be the Terrible player communications tools. Actually I'd have to take that one step further and say they were Abyssmal. Even UO's in-game chat system was superior to AC1's. And that's saying a lot.
AC1 was a decent MMORPG. I'm not saying it wasn't. But it wasn't a blockbuster nor did it have particularly spectacular gameplay. What AC1 had was a lot of REALLY cool features. But they kinda didn't work all that well, at least at first. Which is why it spiked way up to like 120k players then plummeted down from there shortly afterwards. It just didn't catch on. And that wasn't just because of lack of advertizing. It just couldn't compete with the competition. It's not like UO had a hell of a lot of advertizing back then either and it kept growing even when AC1 basically colllapsed down to 50k users.
Like I said: AC1 is a good game. I also think it is better than WoW for that matter. (Not that that is all that hard. WoW really isn't a very good MMORPG). Not taking anything away from AC1... it's a decent MMORPG. But when people hold Turbine up as some kind of MMO giant I just chuckle because other than AC1 they have no claim to fame at all... and AC1 aint all that great a claim... 1 moderately successful MMORPG to their name... and 1 utter failure and 1 well on it's way to failure already, despite one of the biggest IP's in the RPG industry holding it up.

WoW is almost reaching its 2nd year and is STILL growing in subscribers. Asherons call on the other never reached any amazing amount of subscribers and is clearly on its last legs. I'm sorry, but if +-650 players on a server makes you think it will out last WoW, which has thousands of people on over hundreds of servers...
also, WoW clearly defeat Asherons call when it comes to the most important aspect: Fun.
we are going to compare it to music?
Asherons call is a small boyband which never had a great hit.
