Hiya all, just throw your idea of what you would do yourself, let be creative, not start bashing on others, but bring how you would do stuff yourself...
**************************************
I would have 5 games systems working in 1 huge world, in harmony, but independant of each others. Each system would have it logic, it reward, it rules, it zones, and it trivial(never more then trivial) edge to help play on the others systems(determined by the system where the edge is active and not by the system necessarily giving the edge). 1 system would find it to hard to harmonized those 5 very differents gameplays in a MMORPG.
Soloing, grouping, raiding, PvP and Tradeskilling would be completely differents systems and developp by different staff teams and they would design by themselves, inside of their activities, how you can reach the higher end of the game. Mostly the main edge from doing more then 1 activity should be in lowering the XP needed in others activities, yet, a very trivial overlapping reward to all can be added as well.
Only by doing so can you have a fully interesting game, where no aspect is trivial to any other. Sharing common based levels in many systems is welcome, but not sharing everything, it is impossible to not make a system obedient to another if they completely share everything like it is the case atm in all MMORPG.
By doing so, solo uberness would be earned in solo, group uberness in groups, raid uberness in raids, PvP uberness in PvP oriented area(if the PvP team is up to it they can manage different solo, group and raids inspired or not by the others teams, more like a managing job then actually creating a system, althought they need to fine tune the game in PvP logic where the others have no such interest) and tradeskilling in doing what they love, tradeskills.
****************************************
Casual VS hardcore
A casual player need to be able to reach about everything in the game and be welcome to it. I dont believe in any full exclusion system, anyway, programmers work hard and all customers need to benefit from this work. I dont say it need to be easy althought, or really fast. But the deph you need to motivating hardcores is more in *hard identical zones(with better loot and XP)*, tons of secondary trivial edges to developp.
A hardcore should not be the only to access any zone, it is bad. A casual should find it *hard* althought to attain some zones, but not impossible. After 3 months of doing something, the person need to reach the zone top.
So there is basically many tops for each players. Basic levels and zone, should be relatively easy. The top gear of anytype should be hardcore oriented and very hard and regularly refresh, so there is never a player that can sit on the top of his gear and not working to improve it. And, there could be alternative XP system to help improve, always always always more...never ending quest for XP! You can add more levels at a later point. You can add anything more you want, like hellishly hard levels, but it open hellishly hard identical zones, not new zones!
****************************
Level cap that make you of that level in those znes and work on this level range stuff to prevent PL and make it possible to group with friends.
****************************
You could built and place the zones accordingly with a reason why they are placed so. The tradeskill zone should be close to Avatar or Artefacts of Peace Gods(or harmony Gods, or domination Godsif evil), this explain why nobody can even squash a rodent without much efforts(hehe tradeskilling mania). Most cities should be tradeskilling zones, the crowds finding relief in security.
Soloing zones might still be to close to those artefact to allow real focus on anything really mean, but far enought to allow slaughter of lesser creatures. Yet, the closeness of the artefacts or Gods might allow great diversity and very powerfull soloing combos.
And so on, lacking times now...

thx for reading my post.
I would try a completely new and innovating approach, one that has never been seen and is likely to revolutionise the entire MMORPG genre. One so simple it is truelly amazing no one has thougth of it before, i call it the :
"Listening to players approach"
Maybe even talk to them, not with them though god forbid, humanity is not yet ready to engage in conversation with us godly beings who create mmorpgs, but at least to them.
Man i wish there was a nobel prize for these things, i sure could use them 1 million dollars..
