King's Quest and other oldschool adventure games.

Anyone else miss these? I know the occasional adventure game still comes out but they are nowhere near as good as the old ones. Sierra was king of adventure games back in the day (King's Quest, Gabriel Knight, etc.) then they abruptly stopped making them. I for one would love to see a new King's Quest or Gabriel Knight game come out... I know there was a 3D King's Quest released about 5 years back but it was just some crappy action RPG game...

I played and finished Kings Quest 1-3, good games. I also miss those old "type to do" games like Hugo.

IMO King's Quest 5 was the greatest adventure game ever created, but I'm sure people might disagree with me.

I had this old 3 game package thing from LucasArts, I mean this was old. The games were on floppys, each game had like 4-6 floppys to install. It was Monkey Island, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Loom. You may thing im lying because none of those games are Star Wars, but this was back when LA gave a damn.

Loom... That rings a bell... Man I was so young when these games were new... Was that the game where you played some silly wizard in a robe, and the game came with a little spell notebook, and you'd learn spells around the game and cast them by playing notes in certain orders to accomplish goals? That game was awesome . Ooh and I totally forgot about Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade... Aww man such amazing games, where has the genre gone?

Edit: Loom: released 1990... I was four when this game came out, and I can remember beating it... Damn I was a smart kid

Okay I just found an interesting web site... These guys at AGD Interactive are remaking classic adventure games, adding VGA graphics and voice acting. They've already completed King's Quest 1 and 2 and are working on Quest for Glory 2... I soooo have to try this out, would love to relive those games .

Yes, Loom was a pain in the ass. I played it like 7-8 years ago, owned me. I never beat it, the farthest I got was to that city with the glass dome around it or something...wasnt far at all.

Funny you should bring this up...  I was just talking about this with a few of my gamer buddies the other day.  King's Quest, Space Quest, hell even Police Quest!  Great games.  Quest for Camelot (I think that's the name of it...)  Leisure Suit Larry (Yes, those were fun/funny games) and I remember Loom as well.
There was a space game called Star Flight I used to play as well.  Don't know if anyone remembers that, but if they ever made an MMO that was as good as the Star Flight series, I think it'd be amazing.  That game never got boring and there weren't really 'quests' if you want to call it that.  You explored at your own pace and things you did had an effect on the universe around you and how each alien species perceived you.

Glad to see someone else out there had the pleasure of playing some of the greatest old-school games around.
  • FINALLY someone mentioned Police Quest !!! Yeah!!!!

Now that was a deeep game!

    Lets see, my favorites!!

Wizardry I,III,V,VIII Ahh the founding games that actually made rpgs fun!!Wizardry I 1983!!!

SSI<Eye of the Beholder,D&D> SSI<Strategic Similutations inc>No longer a company, but man in the late 80ies early 90ies made some of the best RPGs around, had the market on D&D

Daggerfall<Bethesda>Morrowind anyone!! Honestly daggerfall is probably the Best of the Best. Oblivion only beats it graphically. But Daggerfall is by far the best RPG for PC ever made!

Stonekeep: This was a very fun dungeon crawler rpg. Dont know what happened to the company, let alone remember the company that made it!

FFII,FFIII,FFIV For the time SNES rocked all FFII,III,IV set the stage for some of the best gaming you could find on console systems

Kings Quest FTL!@!!!Yup I said it , I mean it KQ series and LOL series games sucked in a big way compared to the titles above.

A few months back picked up a collection of the old wizardy game to review some old memories.  Now I think those old memories should just stay old memories and that you really can't go back.  Game play was great in it's day but is feels old today.  Now if I could find a collection of the old SSI dnd crpgs...

    Here's
one...I'm fairly certain you can buy the Gold Box games on a Collector CD. I own one, and it has everything from Hillsfar through to Pools of Darkness, the three Eye of the Beholders, Menzoberranzan and a few others.

Old school adventure games? The first Gabriel Knight game, Beneath a Steel Sky (available for free now), just to name a couple.

I like how in a few of those games, one of the Space quest(not sure which) and one of the Kings Quest(was either 5 or 6), you couldn't beat the game unless you talked to a certian person or creature at the beginning of the game.  It was a clown in the Kings quest game...cant recall which one tho.

I think I'm going to load KQ6 and play thru it.

    DOSBOX ASSEMBLE!!!

    Daggerfall was phenominal.

I agree with sephiroth Daggerfall has my vote by a long run for best old school RPG of all time!! To this day i can think of none better. All the rpgs that have been and are now are only toned down versions of what Daggerfall is!!

Does anyone remember, Zork, Zork 2, Return to Zork and Zork Grand Inquisitor, lol i loved those games and also The 7th guest, the horror game.

Ill never forget the start of Return to Zork, the first guy saying "Dont take the road to the south" course everyone does and its instant death lol. Then another old guy who you meet in the lighthouse i think who keeps saying "Want some rye, course ya do" if you say "no" he kills you. Hahaha classic.

    Good times.

Starflight was one of my favorite games of all time. You guys remember the code wheel?

Also, since we are talking Tandy 1000 days, who remembers Below the Root?  Omg THAT would make a great MMO (with a minor graphics upgrade, LOL)

I must be truly old school then because I don't consider Daggerfall an old game. Elder Scrolls: Arena - maybe, but not Daggerfall.

I guess for posts like these (as in the OP), mentioning a 'timeline' for the games may help as you can easily see the age gap between the games being mentioned.  You couldn't possibly compare something like King's Quest to Daggerfall just given the technology available when the games came out if you're looking past the actual story to gauge how good the game is.  Ghaphical, audio, and mainly STORAGE technology (I couldn't fit much on my Tandy 1000 with that super huge 20MB hard drive and upgraded 2MB of ram that my family spent $200 on.) have definitely given the games of today the aesthetics advantage.

For its time though, King's Quest was just an amazing rpg/adventure game to play.

And Thank God someone else remembers Star Flight!  I probably spent more hours playing that game then anything else to date!!!  Yes, it was that good.  For its time.
