A world pass allows you to go to another server when a person gets a number from an NPC and gives it to you. (When you sign up for FFXI your randomly assigned a server) Thus allowing you to be on the same server as your friends. I'm waiting for ps2 version too. (Sucks for all you Comp owners! This game was made for the PS2.) The only reason people whine and bitch about FFXI is because of comp setup...and some poor aspects of gameplay.
Well I'm Caitsith my screen name is Oxxe I'm a level 20 warrior 9 monk and if you want to be in the best LS ever send me a tell and maybe I could pull some strings for you.

Yes the controls for the comp are trash BUT you can just get a usb gamepad for you comp or like I did I bought an adapter from radio shack that connects the ps2 controller to your pc. If you are playing on the comp without a gamepad I recommend you get the adapter or a gamepad, it makes the game much more enjoyable.
Can I use my Microsoft Sidewinder controller for FFXI? I am having a hard time learning the controls. I am sure I could get used to them, but I would give the controller a try. It would be hard to give up my beloved mouse and keyboard, but if I can't use them like I want to in the game, why not try a gamepad?
There are quite a few sidewinders so I not sure which one your talking about. But I think for the best gameplay the contoller needs to have 2 anilog sticks, one to move and one for the camera. If you have a ps2 contoller Id just get the adapter, here in Canada it was 12.99 so if your in the USA im sure it will be cheaper.
You know i have heard people complaining about the mouse and keyboard controls and people say that a controller is better but i realling havn't had any problem with my keyboard and mouse I guess it's just what your used to. I am thinking of trying it out with a controller does anyone know how much the ps2 adapter is because i already have a ps2 and some gamepads just don't compare with the original.

In regards to obtaining a world pass - check the Allakhazam FFXI forums to get a free code. A lot of people are posting them. With each world pass purchased IG, there can be five users. Many people only need one or two. If there aren't any there for the world you wish to be on, another option is to create and delete characters until you finally land on the world server of choice. It's time consuming, but should get you where you want to be.
In regards to PC performance - I've read a lot of posts about it. Most people that seem to have problems are those that "over tweak" their systems. My installations went flawlessly. I'm very impressed. There was a great deal of lag dying when it first came out, but they are trying to resolve this. Last night I lagged pretty badly, but never dropped. (Came back to half health, but never dropped) There are two ways of setting up the client for mouse control... hardware and software. When I use the hardware setting, the mouse does very well. Using software control it disappears from time to time, but is still okay. I like the image used for the software setting. Much more visible in both dark and light backdrops. Although I can run in 1280x1024, I find that 1024x768 still allows for a good view and cuts down on the lag a bit.
FFXI Society - A lot of the uber players are Japanese as they released this game in Japan long before they did in the states, but NA(North American) players are starting to get up there. I normally play in the mornings, so I run into more Japanese players than NA. Japanese players are very comparable to NA players. You get your anti-socials as well as your big-helpers. This game has a feature that allows Japanese players and NA players to still be able to communicate. It auto-translates both ways for you... very impressive! I don't know of any other MMORPGs that can do this. WTG Square-Enix!
On Experience - Definately not for the solo player. FFXI offers skill chains and exp chains. Very neat design. Never seen this before. If you can take them down fast enough I've heard of groups actually trippling the exp gained. (Was a snipper group BTW)
Chat System - Everquest corners the market on this one, but FFXI is not too bad. Part of the problem, I believe, was that they needed to simplify it for the PS2 players. All-in-all not too bad.
Questing - There are a great deal of quests in this game. Some for profit, some for items, some for class changing, some for experience, and some are actually repeatable! Wide variety.
Class Balancing and Versatility - The classes are well balanced. Granted soloing a monk is near impossible, but it should be. I like the ability to be able to "sub-class" a character. This is a very original idea. To be able to utilize half the time spent working on a different class with the same character and bring skills and spells in from it definately helps. When I started subbing at level 20, I found that I was much more effective. It was night and day for me... very worth the efforts of obtaining this ability. (ghoul drop was VERY rare)
Power Levelling (with high level helper) - Only way I could do it is by throwing off heals. They've got this pretty locked down.
Two-Boxability - Have not done this yet. Got my PS2 ready to go when they release it. I'll have to post back once I get it.
Soundtrack - As always... Square has done very well in producing ambients that sound great! No real need to MP3. This is why I own a majority of their titles. What can I say... they fit!
IG Profitability - They have a very impressive auction system in place. There are four main cities in the world and each has it's own economy. The trick is to visit one auction, purchase an item that is easily found in one country and not in another and run back and sell it at a high markup. A lot of people are making a killing on this. Unfortunately, you need to have the ability to get from city to city and that requires levels. But it is possible.
UI - Not too difficult to figure out. It's a little cludgie, but again I believe they did this to accomodate the PS2 release. There are some options for color, but not a lot. They did incorporate a great deal of keyboard controls thank goodness. I'm hoping the PS2 version does as well.
Play Online - Neat system, but I hope they can eventually incorporate email forewarding to my normal mail servers. The client for email does not decipher html messages. (Come in as attachments... very annoying) This system also has you jumping through hoops to try to get into and out of the actual game itself. Also, very annoying. If they could incorporate an html compliant mail system, I would be more apt to actually use it.
All-in-all FFXI is a "must have" in my book.
Sorry bout the small novel... I just haven't earned enough post points to do any rating yet. Hehehe.
