Im in a real bad spot gaming wise so I decided to come here for guidance.
I will start with my history, hopefully at least it will be amusing to people if nothing else comes of this.
My first experience with multiplayer was Bulletin board games in my local area. Alot slower pace.
I never got into MUDs, I wish I had, I went to Quake II mods DDay and Gloom instead.
I started paying for my online gaming with WWIIOnline, I loved it, even in its extremely buggy beginning. But it was VERY time consuming, I then heard about DAoC and decided to try it. I started it in 2/02 and never looked back. I love history and I actually learned quite a few things from that game, they did alot of research! I could see thru the years that the company was focusing more and more on thier RvR sytem. I liked the RvR but they took so much away from PvE that the game became unplayable to me. I had to move on, I tried Anarchy Online (Before it was free) and Eve when it came out. The learning curve on these two titles was a bit too steep for me at the time I guess, and I crawled back to DAoC. I stuck it out until early this year, then couldnt do it anymore. Im done with DAoC. I crawled back to AO and Eve. AO was entertaining me easily due to it being free, but I had to give it up because I knew I would not stay with it. Eve is a wonderful expansive world, but when it came to combat I was put off by the not-so real space physics it has. Im very picky about sci-fi games.
Ive been looking into the distant future at Star Trek Online, but the release date is so far off I dont know what I will do with my time until then, or if it will even be any good. I would like to get into something I could play for quite some time until I know, and to fall back on in case I dont like STO.
Should I list my criteria?
1) free, cheap, or darn good
2) something that isnt flooded with people like WoW or EQ even I.E. not Sony or some other megacorp
3) cannot be too cartoony looking or non-realistic in appearance (not flattened volkswagens as swords, etc)
4) a good soloable AND grouping experience in PvE and PvP or if PvE only it must have situations where you have to defend, not just attacking/raiding all the time
5) some basis in our real world is preferable, even remotely, some thread I could cling to
6) intense character development with many choices, crafting optional but good
7) a diverse community of young and old
8) Oh yes, ummm my computer is not so new, but it can struggle through well enough up to 1.6ghz requirements, even though im about half of that
I know Im asking alot. And I know every page on this forum has a post similar to this, but I have to try.
I thank you in advance for reading this. I put alot of thought into it. I really like MMORPGs, Im just stuck and need help choosing one.
Thank you again
(BTW My DAoC characters are deleted so dont ask for my account info, I closed that door for good)

By the way, EQ2 (which may strain your computer a bit) and CoX have a number of servers, like WoW, but they're not overly crowded, for the most part. Good Luck!
Not alot of good new stuff around to be honest mate. I tried loads of free games, they where for the most part complete crap with no substance and all grind. I then returned to WoW for a while but got bored pretty quick. Now im playing Final Fantasy XI which i am actually enjoying alot.
Have a browse around mate, im sure you will find somthing that sparks some interest for you and then give it a go.
Goodluck finding a game you enjoy, alot of MMORPGers are in the same boat as you at the moment.
Have fun.

get off of mmorpgs for a while and try out something else, try out some abandomware games if your interested in playing old 1988 games, you can get them at Home of the Underdogs, google it if your interested. Try out some RTs and some god-playing games like Black and White so that you can play those while you wait.

$15/mo : Eve Online - has a 14 day free trial
Right now those are the only 2 games I can recommend with a clear conscience, the rest are garbage.
I agree!! I only play EVE now, other games pretty much bore me! How many level 60ies cam ome have for WOW!! I have 8 on 8 different servers with WOW. How many characters high and low can you have with EQ..OMG too much!! 4 level 50ies in DAOC, 1 non TOA!!. The list goes on and on. EVE is the only game where I havent capped, nor got bored!
So EVE is it for me til AOC or Fury is released!
So yea... try it, you might like it.
