I'm sorry, but if you are playing an MMO 16 hours a day, everyday, than you are not being entertained...you are feeding an addiction. Trust me, I know...I used to be that way many years ago. I just hope someday you see the light too.

I play wow and love to pvp...If I get 200 hks in a day Im doing good...or so I thought. Im looking at my friends hk/honor count for the day and he has 1768 hks for the DAY. I asked him how many hours he played to get that many hks.... and he says 18 omg.....

Do I think its unhealthy...HELL YES.

Being healthy is all about moderation...and what is moderate about sitting at the computer for 16+ hours in one day? Now if its a saturday, you slept 8 hours...ate 3 meals....(poptarts arent meals) got some excercise, TOOK A SHOWER and gamed alot--That would fit in as Moderate to me.

HOLD UP-- Your putting skateboarding and surfing up there with Gaming?

    HUGE DIFFERENCE

Being outside gettin sunshine and excercise is alot better than being inside...no sunshine...no fresh air...no EXcercise.

Its safe to say that proffesional surfers have more balanced lives than AVID gamers.

Xplororor you can not compare those things with gaming.  Most of those have real human interaction, learning, making money, and exercise.  Shopping would probably be the worst on the list, but atleast you're out in stores with REAL people.

However, that's your opinion, and why should it be any more valid than any other? I'd be interested in reading your defense for surfers having 'a more balanced life than avid gamers'.

First of all, 8 hours is only half of 16.  If you took everything you listed
here and put 16+ hours like the OP did, even you must admit that all of
    them sound extremely out there.

Now I don't know much about skateboarders or surfers, but since we are talkng about physical activities and techniques here, I think it is safe to assume that a lot of hours would be required to master these "sports" and to develop skill.  But if I personally knew of a skateboarder or surfer that was at it for more than 8 hours a day constantly, and they weren't gearing up for some major show or competition, I'd tell them to give it a rest for a bit.

All of those other hobbies you listed - if they are being done for 8+ hours a day constantly, YES, people would also point out to them that they are addicted!  A jock in the gym for for more than 4 hours a day is a sore jock.  Bookworms are often told to "get a life", I'm sure.  Being a workaholic is generally NOT a good thing - it has been known to deteroriate relationships and even lead to heart-attacks.  And what women do you know that spend 8+ hours a day shopping frequently?  Are they rich?  Doesn't matter though - sounds like they are addicted to shopping which isn't a "oh that's okay" thing (unless, again, they are rich and have nothing else to do).  And what makes you think that folks frequently going out and getting drunk for 8+ hours is considered healthy by the masses?  And the last example regarding sex addicts - *laughs* the word "addict" should say it all.  Yes, I am sure that even sex addicts have been told at least once that they need to seek professional help.

Oh - and indulging an addiction CAN hurt someone.  Yourself, and everyone who cares about or depends upon you.

If you are just playing 16+ hours because you are excited or bored that day, that's one thing.  But if you are frequently spending more than half a day doing ANY one thing - be it working, sleeping, surfing, watching tv, playing video games, it is a bit too much.  I know, I know - that's just my opinion.  Just had to say it.

You disagree with me? You think being inside SLOTH fest...is more healthy than being outside getting excercise?
I dont have to be a doctor to make this point....but Ill try to humor you. And since Ive took the time to write this-- Why dont you prove your point and show me how Someone who sits on there ass all day can have a more balanced life than a surfer who goes out gets excercise, a good body, a tan and T&A :)

Take average joe right? Were gonna put average joe thru 3 Surfer years. Average joe gets up early in the morning to get the good waves. Just getting up early is good for you. Ive read where getting up early could be the cure for most depressions. Joe goes to the beach--gets sunshine (good for ya-keeps ya happy-serotonin/vitamin D) gets great excercise via swimming/surfing.

Compare that to----- an Avid Gamer. Avid gamer joe goes to bed rather late...gets up late(not good for ya). Plays his game of choice out of the sun......gets no excercise and doesnt move from his seat for HOURS on end.

Fast forward our two joes 3 yrs....and take a look at them.

Average surfer joe is in good shape from all that surfing, has a tan,a smile on his face (no depression hehe) and a girlfriend (cause his hawt surfer bod).

Avid Gamer Joe is pasty white, Fat and depressed. The poptarts, lack of sunshine and inactivity havent been good for him.

So, all of these people I am talking to over ventrillo, they are just bots, or NPC's?

    No, they are real people.

I agree 100% with xplororor, do what you love to do.

EDIT: in reply to the post above comparing the surfer and Gamer.

You can't make that kind of sterotype. For example, you forgot to mention that surfing can be much more dangerous than just sitting in your house. That guy 3 years from now could be in a wheelchair.

You also take avid gaming a bit too serriously here. To say that an avid gamer NEVER gets outside and ALMOST NEVER moves is just plain wrong.

Being physicaly well and being much more than that are different. The person that spends their time at the gym, ect. ect. is much more than just "physicaly well". I am perfectly healthy, and I have no problems with my self.

You spend your time trolling gaming forums!? It is possible to spend time working, seeing friends, exercising and then just vedging in front of a game. If you spent less time trolling you might free up more time for something constructive.

Soin reply to the post above comparing the surfer and Gamer. You can't make that kind of sterotype.Your wrong, because I just did-- thats what stereotypes are. Facts that are "usually" true about a group of people, but not always true. You know like Asians are usually bad drivers. Go to southern California and tell me thats not a stereotype that holds some weight. For example, you forgot to mention that surfing can be much more dangerous than just sitting in your house. That guy 3 years from now could be in a wheelchair.
Yeah I also forgot to mention that you can die because a Airplane fell out of the sky and landed on your house. Give me a break about surfing being dangerous. You ever surfed/sponged? Its just as dangerous as riding a bike down the street.

Let me make one thing clear. I love playing on the computer...PvP is just a blast. Im not anti games by any means. But to say even with my small playing time of 6+ hours a day-- that its HEALTHY is completely untrue. Im not knocking that its fun but I dont think its Ideal. I could run a mile---play basketball etc etc, ALOT of things that are HEALTHY and BENEFICIAL to myselfIm not against games but if you cant admit we could all probably be doing someting better wtih our time, then you have a problem..

(I know this is long, but read it...its good  )

Finally, a worthy topic I can reply to. Right now ive been trying out Hero Online and for a free game i found it the best, even surpassing silkroad. Very fun, great DII feeling...ahh......I spent about 7 hours playing it today? I was home all day today, so I had nothing to do. Bad heat wave here, so we really cant go outside.

Now, coming from the doctor himself:

I most enthusiastically happily voted insane. Even with all the time of the world I still couldnt keep myself on for more than 4 hours straight. I know this is a free MMO and not as "engaging" as the others, but its still a game. I wouldnt even say 16 hours a day is crazy...anything over 10 and you need help. Think about it - 24 hours in a day. You spend 8 sleeping, so that cuts it down to 16. 10 hours of that spent PLAYING A GAME? That means 6 hours of doing something else. These people need proffessional help, it is called addicition. MMO addicition is real. Everyone has a certain amount, though I think majority of MMO players obviously have a negligible amount so that it does not really affect them. But people with a larger amount of MMO addicition go overboard. 16 hours is aboslutely ridiculous - that is all day. You have nothing better to do with your time than sit in front of a monitor, and click away. Sit in a chair all day and talk to a SCREEN and not REAL PEOPLE in REAL LIFE? Yes, as the saying goes - Get a life.

I was reading from the posters below me, that one is arguing that playing MMO's is "perfectly healthy" while the other is objecting it. I am sorry but I have to agree that playing MMO's or ANY GAME consistently, every day, for an excessive amount of time (6+  hours) is very unhealthy. It is both physically and mentally degenerating. Let me give you my expieriences.

I started playing MMO's at around 13. I know its kind of young, but I didnt spend too much time on the game. That was during Asheron's Call...sigh...such a great game. I spent 3 hours consistent most of the time. As time went on and I got older, say 15 and 16, DAOC came out. Again, I wasnt playing all that much in the beggining. I was pretty physically fit and lifting quite a bit at the gym. But then I found myself playing more and more, and then - guess what. I stopped going becuase of that stupid game. And I started to lose my muscle. And I lost all of it my friends. Then came that day when I pulled an "all day marathon." when I got up from the chair to go to bed, I got dizzy. I realized I became the one thing that I despised the most - a slob, and a complete and utter nerd to the extreme. Mind you, im not bashing nerds (im one myself) but thats too far when you start thinking of people you met online in real life.

Think of it. Youre sitting in a chair ALL DAY. No movement. How is your body going to react? its going to deteriorate. My muscles right now? mostly mush, Im starting to get back to the gym. But theyre mush. You dont even feel that "good" sitting in that chair, cause the only parts of your body getting excersize are your fingers. Youre not even moving your head. As humans, its necessary for us to move around, lift things, and do at least a moderate amount of physical activity. Having pretty much 1% of physical activity (getting up to go to the bathroom, getting snacks etc) its absolutely unhealthy. And then your mind suffers as well - cause not only are you addicted, but you cant stop thinking about the game.

Even your social skills degenerate. Sure youre fine talking online, but there ARE NOT smiley faces you can make IN REAL LIFE (  ) In real life, theres actual facial emotions. Youre typing into a screen. In real life, you actually can have a real romantic relationship in which you can touch the other person, NOT yourself.  Yes, I'm being blunt, but folks...if youre spending all day on the comp playing games and you cant get off, you need help.

So its an absolute Yes, you are insane. MMO addicition is real. Even I was sucked in at one point. Get off and go do something, folks.

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Steelarm

This is what it all boils down to.  If it gets to the point where it's unhealthy for you or the people around you, then what are you doing playing it?  If you're gonna mess up a relationship or screw with your health, then yes, you're as addicted as people who destroy their minds using crack.   There has to be a stopping point, and 16+ hours is a little past that stopping point, IMO.

Try living in Sitka Alaska. Then tell me you have enough to keep you ocuppied.

I work at the hospital and will pull 16 hour + shifts. When I get home, I pull 16 hour gaming... WHats the diffrence?

Also, I go to the gym, keep in shape, eat healthy, have an active social life with friends/co-workers. But when I want to game, I game.

I have no problem when the time you spend in a MMO replace the time you would watch TV or do any other hobbies. Where i have a problem though, it's when it start replacing your jobs, friends and the whole 9 yards we call "LIFE".

I agree with the poster above that claims those people playing over 10 hours a day on a regular basic needs help. It's no better or neither more productive as an addiction then someone who is on drugs all the time. People on drugs or alcoholic receive treatments and go in cure of desintoxication. Someone playing "any" type of game for 10 hours day+ should receive the same kind of assistance.

P.S. (I'm an MMO developer, just in case you would be tempted to doubt of my allegiance to the MMO industry here.)

What deserves to be done, deserves to be "well" done...

    Is that stupid too?

At first instinct, I thought it was insane but I remembered doing it in my EQ days , not 16 hours but it must have been about 14 max sometimes. Looking back on it, it was  quite excessive and its part why I am cautious about new mmorpgs and that. I don't think its too bad unless you do it day after day and then you really do degenerate mentally. I started getting really big bouts of depression at the end of EQ and I just quit. WoW I think is insane with the WoW BG honor system which encourages massive hours, a really stupid system.

I dunno... I personally have never been able to sit in front of the PC and bang away at any game for more than just a few hours... I think my record was an 8 hour fear raid 'back in the day' (and only because we wiped... then wiped again on the CR... we did finally get everyone out but UNGH) and I actually felt ill after being at the PC that long.... While I don't care if someone chooses to do that I do have to say that I think spending 16 out of 24 hours in front of the computer playing a video game is a bit... unbalanced.  Especially if you do it regularly...  But every once in a while?  I can see people doing that and I really don't feel that it's our right to judge them.

Me?  I'd never do a 16 hour session at any game.... LOL actually I'm playing pretty 'hard core', these days, if I hit 16 hours in a week...   But as the saying goes:  "Different strokes for different folks".

Just because you don't enjoy something doesn't give you a right to pass judgement on someone who does.

    Gamers turning on gamers...

I always hate reading gamers tell other people to go get a life, expecially if they have more forum posts then the person they are telling to get a life.

It is quite possible to balance it all out. If I game 16 hours one day but not again the rest of the week, whats the harm? Have I lost all social life? No. Honestly, the people who should get a life are the ones coming in and telling other people to get one when they have no idea about their situation.

What consitutes a "life" anyways. People throw around that term so loosely, usually with "Get a girlfriend" attached to it. I kind of find it ridiculous.

Everything is becoming more and more digital. Myspace and MSN Messenger are the two biggest ways to keep in-touch with friends. Why can't games be another way? I have made alot of friends from my years of online gaming. My guild used to get together and play paintball on the weekends...

After we were done, we would log in-game and play together and have fun... I don't know, I think this is a slanted poll. You guys need to take in consideration of everything, not just the narrow minded view you already have.
