My opinion on this will probably be the unpopular opinion. I'll give you some background information about myself. I participate in semi contact fightsports pretty intensely. In fact, I spend more time practicing my Taekwon-do and Karate (and soon Muay Thai) than I spend playing MMORPGs. I don't like to brag, but I'm a pretty intelligent person. In high school, I was often and sincerely called a 'genius' by some of my teachers. Again, I'm not saying this to brag, but I just want you to realise I'm not the stereotypical brianless jock. With my physique of 172cm (5'7") I couldn't even intimidate a three year old if I tried - not that I'd want to, anyway. My parents have and are still excellent and loving parents - I naturally don't have a police record, and in fact I've never been sent out of class.
You're probably wondering where I'm going with this. Well, I'm not against this and don't think of it as an issue. In modern society, we have very little outlet for any violence bottled up inside. Human beings, and especially late-teenage and early-adult men have especially aggressive emotions. We can't change it - and it certainly doesn't make us the 'dumb cavemen' image we are often stereotyped with. These are simply traces of our primal nature that gave us an advantage in protecting our families thousands of years ago. The reason many of you are against it because you have, since birth, been influenced by certain social norms of this day and age. You have been consciously and subconsciously indoctrinated by everybody and everything around you.
I feel that if a fight is started by two consenting adults with clear rules (such as, but not at all limited to, stopping when the other gives up, is unconscious or otherwise unable to give up), it shouldn't be made illegal. I'd love to try my hand at it sometime as long as clear rules are made that I can agree with, and I wouldn't want anybody to judge me negatively because of that. Because in the end, it's nothing more than full contact sparring some Martial Art schools already employ.
If you feel this is wrong, I can fully understand you! However, you shouldn't dictate others on how to live. We're all individuals, and nobody is forcing you to fight.
I'm sorry for the long read. Thanks for reading this - I hope I made my stance clear without offending anyone.
If you are both consenting and willing adults, and if you are in a pre-designated combat area (a fight parlor, etc), by all means beat youself to death.
I'll be happy, they'll be happy.
What you can't do is go around town startign brawls out in the street, that's just extremely crude and primitive human behavior. Now you can see that as being completely acceptable since "it's natural and humanity has done it for centuries" but If you're gonna play that card, then might as well go on a rape-fest or looting spree since it falls under the same category.
Gettin in fights is part of growing up. Catchnig your first hard beating teaches you a lot about yourself. Not that I advocate the stuff mind you. But I can understand where theyre coming from. Todays society has tried to suffocate the male need to beat each other up. When I was a kid we used to beat on each other all the time, even during recess. I can recall even getting hurt just being overzealous in gym class. But now, especially after Columbine, and all these special news reports about bullying and fight clubs, and teen violence are forcing some internalization. Well fact of the matter is were just animals too. Lets face it, older brothers will beat on their younger brothers, there will always be bullies, you will probably see a few fights if not participate in one at some point in your life. Like war, its just something innate, theres that balance between life and death, and theres also that balance of violence and civility in man. But lets face it, is fighting not the truest form of self expression?
I agree with you that the type of fighting displayed in the article is very crude and should not be promoted by all means. I like the idea of fight clubs - but I don't want it to result in death, innocent victims or the violating of neighboorhood peace as much as you don't.
This is really sad. There are some things in life that I just don't understand and this is one of them. I could think of a million things I could fill my life up with other than participating in something like this. I feel really sorry for these kids who think this is something cool. It shows how desensitized and violent we're becoming that people are beginning to accept stuff like this. What kind of parents do these kids have?
It shows how desensitized and violent we're becoming?
This sort of thing was happening since the beginning of documented history and even before that! Just because humans have made great advancements in technology, science etc. Doesn't mean our ancestral roots don't lurk inside or genetic makeup.
It's who we are, it's what we are. Don’t deny it but rather embrace it.
It's not who I am. I don't want to go out in the street and get in a fight and have someone film it. I don't have any idea how this could be interpreted as fun. People get hurt. How is that fun?

Everyone is prone to violence under the right circumstances.

Only problem I really have are the people taking the "moral high ground" with their snobbish elitism.
What moral highground? This is violent behavior. That is a sign of some kind of emotional problem.
How is saying that snobbish elitism?
Turning away and acting like it's no big deal when obviously people are acting out some kind of internal aggression to me seems selfish, snobbish, and elitist. It's dismissive of a persons potential and the effect they're having on society.

Part of the job of adults in society is teaching kids how to control their emotions and showing them that their actions have consequences. It's called growing up. When you dismiss this kind of behavior or tell them that it's okay then you are feeding into the idea that violence is okay. So, you are teaching them that violent outbursts and lack of control are just fine.

Please note how I didn't condone the behaviour as reported in the article. I merely argued that people shouldn't think of consenting adults (with clear ground rules to avoid long term damage as best as possible) are freaks, or had bad parenting. It is merely a byproduct of today's society and part of being human.
Also, while I presented my opinions as facts in this thread, it should be noted that everything I said so far is my opinion - I can't back up anything I said, it is merely my opinion formed on what I've seen and read, and I'd never claim my opinion is worth more than any other person in this thread. Take my opinion for what it's worth - not a whole lot.

ROFLMAO...... cops arent always necessarily as smart as the societal expectations on them.
in fact i know some cops who are so dumb that i doubt that can safely do their own laundry.
my case and point i would do doughnuts in the parking lot of an ice skating rink.
and this cop was set to patrol this area about every night of the week.
so he would do his patrol sitting in the parking lot next door eating the food from that restaurant every time.
and i would go in my 5 second 0-60 4 banger and do doughnuts, however axcess to the parking lot i was a mile away and he would have to go through a residential area.
so every time he would see us instead of being stealthy like a moron he would turn on his lights in the parking of the restaurant he sat in and then would arrive 10 minutes later flashing his lights all the way. while we went out the secret dirt road exit he never discovered.
this happened 27 times and he did the exact same thing every god damn time........
im telling you if he was in charge of national security osama bin laden could come into the country with an AK47 in his arm and a nuclear bomb on his back with a fake ID made with Crayolas....

Perhaps, but you dont want to teach your kids to lie down and take a beating either.
As with everything in life, you have to find the balance between those two extremes.

You're comparing apples and oranges. And in the process you've strayed from your original argument.
Of course I wouldn't teach my kids to lie down and take a beating. That's not what this is about. This is about teens participating in violent fights that are being filmed and sold. This is about gang members who obviously have no parental control at home or who have parents who don't have the sense enough to know why you teach kids that violence is wrong.
This is not boys just being boys or people acting human. This is violent behavior taken to an extreme by a bunch of thugs who can't comprehend the repurcussions of their behavior.

If you feel this is wrong, I can fully understand you! However, you shouldn't dictate others on how to live. We're all individuals, and nobody is forcing you to fight.
I'm sorry for the long read. Thanks for reading this - I hope I made my stance clear without offending anyone.
98% of the teenage population does or has tried smoking pot. If you''re one of the 2% who hasn''t, copy & paste this in your signature.
Why are you so proned to violence?
Everyone is prone to violence under the right circumstances.
These aren't "the right circumstances".
And learning to control your emotions is part of maturing into an adult. Excusing this behavior does nothing to teach these kids that.

I havent said I condone it, but I can understand it. Society is screwed up, and its producing more screwed up kids.
