Super laggy in: Mos Eisley, Coronet, Naboo, The Mensix Mining Facility on Mustafar.  Other places not noticeable, really.  Doesn't matter if there isn't a soul around. Those places are like mud to move through.

Dont move until after the city loads once you step out of the space station and see if it clears.

How much ram do you have and do you have shadows turned on? If you don't have atleast 1gb of ram it is not going to run well. Go out of the game and go into the video options and disable everything in the out of game options to improve performance. And make sure you do not have shadows on, especially terrain shadowing.

    It's not just you.
Something I noticed since I JUST reactivated my AAP and decided to play around with SWG on my system (rather than on my friend's).

    1) Pre NGE I could run SWG with all settings maxxed as well as 8x AA and Antistropic Filtering (as well as a bunch of other whistles) turned on my video card (bloom off in the game, of course) and got phenomenal graphics from the game and almost 30FPS.  Even in relatively large PVP battles I rarely had to turn anything down (and usually just turned off shadows in those)

    2) Post NGE: This Weekend I tried NGE.  I never changed any graphics settings on my card since the last time I played SWG (Pre-NGE).  When I played this weekend (after straigtening out the autofire/autoaim thanks to the 'fanboys' help) I was getting 8-9 FPS (with the exact same graphics options and video card settings as pre-NGE).   To get back to 18-24FPS I had to:
    • Turn AA on the card down to 4x.
    • Turn off all shadows except character.
    • Change character shadows from volumetric to basic.
    • Enable LOD scaling.
So no, it's not just you.  The NGE didn't improve graphics quality at all and significantly increased the overhead somehow.  Frankly I find the NGE graphics mods that were done look uglier than they did Pre-NGE.

Hold on -- please do not tell this person the game is not laggy in general, that would be a flat out lie.

This game is one of the most non-effecient game engines to date, it is more then 7 years old now actually and is by far outdated and not meant for what the game is TRYING to deliver right now.

Since beta it got worse over time.   Housing, data, bad programing has helped this.   Since lag is a known ISSUE they are always trying to improve on I think it is pretty clear it is present.  (If it wasn't a issue you would not see it in the notes I'm sure).

Before I left the game in the NGE of it all, I was using a P4 3.2 extreme intel, 4 gig of ddr 400hz ram (only 2 recod) -- Nvida 7800 GS OC with two 74 gig Raptor Drives in Raid not to mention the 3 meg dsl connection.

I jerked around like a crack addict on a bad day... Flying is horrid now, the software lag is unreal not the connection.   Ping and Framerate is somthing different then just laggy jerky feelings.   Benny Hill would be proud if he was alive with this game.

So by all means it is not just a (New thing) for lag to be in the game, it's a old thing that has gotton worse even with alot less players.

Actually, with the release of ToOW they introduced Specular Terrain Lighting.  At first this only worked on Musatafar, but in publish 28 they enabled it for all planets and it seems to be the main slow down.  Turning it off generally improves the FPS for most people that have asked me about it.  The only thing you miss out on is shiny terrain :P

Don't try to turn my post helping someone into yet another political SWG sucks post please. I never made any statements on wether it was his computer, the state of the game or anything else. I simply stated what he could do to try to fix the problem he ASKED about.

I have said for a very long time the SWG is innefficient as hell even before the NGE and since they added the Mustafar ground refraction effect to everywhere it is even worse plus the sand planets look like you are walking on a golden brownie.

No do you have something helpful to add to the person having the problem or are you just trolling?

It turns itself on automatically the next time you log in, a bug they refuse to fix even though they have done detailed work with the settings UI recently. And actually I find only a marginal improvement turning it off, there is something else they screwed with that is really causing problems, atleast it seems that way to me.

I got mine mostly smoothed out now but I had to turn off some frills to do it.

It's amazing how much worse the lag has gotten. I used to only lag in the big cities like Coronet, and was fine everywhere else. And back then I was using some $300 e-Machine. And now, a thousand dollars later, I can't even run around in the wild when I have to planet all to myself.

A thing to try would be to set it, alt tab out and go to your profiles directoy and then make your .opt file Read Only.

When I played SWG (PRE-NGE) I never had a problem with lag except when 6 or more players were in one area. When I came back for a month to try it out it was insanely laggy. I bought a new GeForce 4 7800 GTX card and I no longer had issues with lag, except when there were more than 6 players in an area.

SWG was always laggy Pre-NGE and Post. I also noticed it was a ram hog.. their code sucks pure ass imho.

I will try that, usually though windows will ignore read only tags. I can always take rights away and see if that works I guess too.

It's everyone. The answers are above, and you can improve it a bit, but it's a HUGE issue in large fights. Fad is right, they refuse to fix some very basic issues that are large GP issues. Simply said, it's unexcusable, especially considering this wasn't as big of an issue a year ago. These things should be getting better, not worse. And SOE doesn't seem to have a plan even though they know about it... /ponder

Two other settings that can make an impact on lag (seems to affect the newer systems more, oddly enough).  From Launchpad, click game options.  In the window that pops up, click Advanced tick Disable world pre-loading and disable file caching.  You can also experiment with the disable asynchronous loader option too.  This will make the game load alot faster and it should be less bogged down as it doesn't load up a whole lot of stuff that you may or may not encounter.

Correction- This will not load things faster, but will allow you to proceed without waiting for items to load, while they load. Be careful, you can end up stuck in things. I had these setting changed and I would sometimes actually log in stuck in walls, and get stuck in houses and base spawns while driving. It does help though... Just don't be surprised if a house spawns on you during a PVP fight, lol...

    Ahh but wait:
I already had it off... it wouldn't have been an issue.  I never changed my settings.  In fact once I turned off certain features to get back near 30FPS (around 18-24 once I made the changes) I turned ON the specular terrain lighting and it only lowered FPS by 1 (I get 17-23FPS now except when loading large cities into RAM, it drops to about 14FPS while the objects load then jumps back up to 17-23FPS)

Specular lighting isn't the problem.  It's added overhead from something else about NGE.

    LOL
That's always been an issue, from day 1.  I've had it turned off since time imemorial.  And it was the first thing I checked when I noticed the radical drop in FPS.  In addition the only things these two checks REALLY affect is load time when zoning into/out of spaceports/shuttleports.  The rest of the game it has minimal impact on that I've ever noticed.

As I said by shutting off most shadows and cutting my AA settings down to 4x I managed to alleviate most of the pain... but I Shouldn't HAVE To.   The engine had, PRE NGE!!!!  BETTER GRAPHICS with HIGHER settings.  Now the graphics are not only worse (that specular lighting they added is horrible) but also more of a drag on the system than before.

And, no, I don't rely on the in-game FPS monitor.  I use FRAPS.

:)  It's actually a method Jedi used to use to get away from BH if they didn't bring their own porta-house along.  "Zoom towards city at max speed and try to get 'stuck' inside a house that spawns on you.

Not real frequent but I've had that particular 'bug/feature' used against me.  And I've gotten stuck in a building once or twice in the past (pre-NGE when I played).

Maybe I've just been lucky   I did get stuck in those faction bases that popped up on ya after the NGE launched, but I think that was more a game wide thing that happened regardless.
