Personally I think designing content for soloers is a huge mistake, especially when developers want to make the content easy enough that soloers aren't frustrated. When people group this content is smashed without challenge. A soloer will rarely find challenge in solo content that comes out in mmorpg's either. While it is okay to be a soloer, as i general am more often than not, I think that being a soloer should be very challenging and subsequently very rewarding. The best way to do this is to design content for groups with it still being possible for a very skilled soloer to deal with it as well.
I think big game developers are clueless Why because the guys making the game design decisions at a good chunk of them are business or marketing grads, put the artists and code monkeys in charge you will get better games.
Look at all the great indie software of the last couple of years, its great because they cut the bullshitters out off the equation, they're games made for gamers, BY GAMERS
