Should have stayed Middle Earth Online

The name that is.. Lord of the rings was a series of a specific event in middle earth, the MMO itself contains thousands of different characters creating their own story.

I dont understand what they were thinking.. Turbine r b n00bs.

They want to get the attention of all the folks who only saw the movies and might not know whart 'middle earth' is. That's my take.

    But I agree with you.

The main story arch is directly related to the Lord of the Rings story. It's about everything that had to happen to ensure the ring bearer’s safety.

Just to add a little info, I remember reading that the game will be set during the time of the first book. Maybe that has something to do with it. I think some of the quests and events that you participate in will be involved with helping the fellowship get to Rivendell. The name also might have something to do with the fact that they only have a liscense for "The Lord Of The Rings" trilogy and nothing more, or so I think. I assume that later on they will consider moving the story along into the second book in an expansion. That would be cool!

I liked Middle Earth Online more myself also, although I can understand the reasoning behind changing it to LotRO.

It calls more attention to itself for those who may not be avid fans of Tolkien or for those who prefered the movie experience to the books. And as someone mentioned, the believed timeline of the game is situated shortly after the fellowship sets on their journey so the title gives a better idea of what might be in store.

Unfortunately, I also feel that the title promotes a fairly big falsehood. The name Lord of the Rings, to me at least, insinuates the story that we've seen, read and love from the books and the movies, an adventure that is on going and exciting. From what we know, the game is fairly stationary, there's absolutely nothing dynamic about it.

Much like SWG was, it will be stuck in a time and not move the development team does (if ever) or an expansion roles around. Maybe I'm just picky but that feels very missleading IMO.

Same here I wished the name would have stayed Middle Earth Online - but on the other hand many of the "youngster" don't know what this standsfor. With LORTO they can associate the movies. So it really comes down the the audience aka the targeted subscribers range.
I think MEO would have given them more oppertunities time/scale wise.

I wonder how many of the books and stories their license actually covers.  it would make alot of room for expansions.

I think they have licence for all LOTR books including Hobbit.

Knock the world right off its feet and straight onto its head.

Perhaps the Tolkien Estate will be a bit more draconian about the timeline. I'd hate to be seeing Prequal items and events popping up when "The Hobbit" hits theaters.

How lame would it be to start at the beginning of the war of the one ring, and they release the Trials of Smaug expansion, with a strangely young looking Bilbo as a quest giver.

Or MOB's dropping Arkenstones, PC's running around with names like, Ganddalf, Arween, Aragone, Thoorinn, Deeznutts, Elfin_A, Sauronnnnnnn. It'd be pathetic...

I'll bet thats exactly what you will be seeing in the beginning - for some reasons many people show not much creativity when it comes to naming their characters.
