I have sampled and tested many mmorpgs. To my conclusions, these mmorpgs are the only ones you should be spending money on.
EVE - Its a good game, its not for everyone but if you love a tactical game/flight simulator/ PVP/politics. This is a great mmorpg for you and worth monthly
WoW - A great game from start to finish but WoW also isnt for everyone. If you are that type of person that loves mmos but has alot of time on their hands this is the mmo for you. The expansion they are going to aliveate the PVP grind.
City of heros/Villians - a very different game, only one in its genre i found it enjoyable enough to pay monthly for but it will be repetitive and not for hardcore gamers.
EQ1 - SoEs only current gem in my opinion, not only does it have tons of things to do and see the graphics have been improved alot, soloability has been improved. SOE improved alot on EQ, while still very old it is still very new in the wierd sence. EQ will not die anytime soon and the population far surpasses any current SOE game.

Thats it, those four, while there are still other good mmorpgs out there, the populations are so bad that its just not worth sinking money into, other games have been dumbed down/changed so much that it ruined the game/others sounded good before release but were complete lies upon release.
Population is very important in a mmorpg, you need that social aspect. When a mmorpgs population has hit very low it most likely will die and the creator of that game is currently making a next gen mmo so it isnt worth putting money into that other title.
I didnt mention GWs because of course its free to play minus buying the game.

I personally believe any game is worth paying for, if it brings you a months worth of joy (or however long you're subscribed for). While it sucks to play in an empty world, you wouldn't notice if you were in one of the largest guilds in that empty world, where you always had someone to talk to and group with. I believe in quality over quantity.
Currently I play SWG and EQ2 on the Station Pass. Combined, I feel they are worth the $25 a month. They bring me enough entertainment every month to keep me from banging my head against the wall when I am bored.
Heart is in the cards.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

This is just my opinion, but I dont think any MMO is worth paying for. This is why I play free games, or games you have to pay once, in which I mean just buying from the store.

I am a space flight fan and EVE online does not appeal to me mainly because it's an RPG game.
The only mmo I am paying for is Jumpgate because of it's very unique flight engine which gives you an immersive feel that you are flying your ship in first person view, twitch based controls, with out the the avatar, character skills and, and the dice rolling aspects.
I live in my own bubble.

Firsty off if population is so important im missing DAoC for one still 150K players playing enough to say population is good enough.
Im not agreeing on the fact that population totally makes a game in fact in the case of eq1 i still would advice against playing, although populations is good too much "old timers" around meaning that you would invest considerable time before you get too a lvl where you actaully get to meet these people (although this also is the same story for DAoC)
The main thing is that which ever mmorpg you want to play you have to meet people you enjoy playing with how many totally play the game is IMO totally inrelevant unless you just have a hard time making friends. In that case you should only play games that are totally invested with people so the stumble on you if you like it or not. But if you can hide behind a screen and still can't make friends you should go for counceling not play a mmorpg that only a mimics social interaction.
But I have to agree to the other guy up there. Any game is worth your cash as long as YOU are enjoying it. Thats what we all are looking for are we not?
WoW a game totally invested with imature kiddies doing de raid grind fest is a lonely place for the more mature players. l33t screaming kiddies are like the kiddies screaming in the neighbourhood there only ennoying they don't give you live the feeling that it's less lonely.

Do I ever sleep?
A population of anti social peeps can fill a game. Look at WoW filled with L33T screaming kiddies making it probably they most ANTI-SOCIAL game around. no social aspect in wow just kiddies with to much time fighting about the lwt.
If you want a social aspect to a game you better of getting RL friends to play the game with you. Then you can actaully come together in RL and talk about the game and do some REAL socializing
If the reason for this list is because you think mmorpg should have an social aspect about it aTiTD should be listed aswell. Because the fact it's missing combat oriented aspects it's probably the most social game around. You just can't get anywhere in this game unless you group up with people.
Also you listed 4 games that all 4 have MASSIVE solo options and also have MASSIVE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE PLAYING SOLO so where is the social aspect in that ???
If you find the social aspect of a game important then you should play DDO sins they had to include solo options after release because there was none of that around in the game. In DAoC beginning days you where pretty much forced to group if you wanted to reach max lvl and now it's probably the game witht the strongest community (Allthough it's pretty hard to get into for new players i must admit). You should list all games with little solo options not the most population
