I was thinking of buying this game but for the sole purpose of PVP. What is the max level and how long does it take to get?
I remember playing this game when it first came out and the grind was VERY VERY harsh. Is it still harsh?
Playing 4-5 hours a day how fast could i reach max level so I can PVP effectively?

Reaching max level takes a while, the first person to get to 75 was like 8-9 months after L2 released. But the grind has gotten a LOT easier.
If you play 4-5 hours a day, and you know what you are doing (using all the newbie buffs, trading in items at low levels, doing raids, etc.) then it should take you like 1-2 months to get to 40-50. Participating in castle seige pvp, you can usually have an affect at around level 60. You can PvP any level though, I used to pvp in the 30's with my guild .
Don't know how long it would take to get to 75 though.

If you played 8 hours a day and had full buffs the whole time you were leveling maybe 3 months to reach 75. Then another 2-3 to reach 78. If you ebayed, had full buffs, bot, get big boomed from 1-40 you could get to 75 in 3 weeks and maybe 78 in another month.
S.Claws is correct. Too many variables. If you don't have people helping you, top equipment etc then it could take a long time.
But if you are given top equipment, play a lot of hours per day, maybe a buffer tagging along, some AOE parties... then much less. The grind is still harsh but not at all like it was when the game first came out. An old player from prelude days just came back, started a new toon and now has it to 50. That is about 3 months work.
Still, he had gold from his first time around and played a lot.
At my lvl, lvl 74 (with 11.03% to 75) I get .01 per kill. Sometimes I get a little less than that and it takes 2 mobs to move me .01%
If I did more AOE parties that would probably go up a bit.

Yes much much much variables. If you solo a lot without a buffer never buy adena and so on it will probally take you close to a year or more to reach 78.
If you buy two accts and level up a buffer/healer and then later keep the buffer out of party when it is about lvl 60. Dependant on your class will depend on which buffer you should choose. Or you can get into a clan that has buffers, but this will be a little while since you may have to lvl up a bit.
If you go all out and ebay, bot, power leveled, ect. Yes you could hit lvl 78 within about a month or so, unless you get banned.
BTW, you don't have to hit lvl cap to be effective in PvP. Become an archer or nuker and when you hit like lvl 70 you will be fine. And belive me lvl 70 is A LOT easier to get to than lvl 75 or 78. You will be pretty good in 1v1, but really it is meant for mass pvp...and you will be doing great in that.
It took me about two-ish weeks to get to 50 on my character when I played. That was me, however, playing 10 hours a day probaly (even though not all of it I just grinded, probaly could have cut it down to a week.)
If you know what you are doing, and dedicate those 4-5 hours each day to leveling you should be able to hit 40 or so within a few weeks, easily. After you hit 50 or so it will probaly take you two days per level. (depending on the class).
After a while though your going to hit another HUGE wall, probaly somewhere in the 60's. After that I have no idea how long it'd take.
